"The Earth is not warming. The White Cliffs of Dover are tumbling into the sea and causing sea levels to rise. Global warming is helping grow the Antarctic ice sheet.
Those are some of the skeptical assertions echoed by Republicans on the U.S. House of Representatives Science, Space and Technology Committee yesterday. The lawmakers at times embraced research that questions mainstream climate science during a hearing on how technology can be used to address global warming.”

Not so fast Adam. Huntsville Alabama is called "Rocket City" because during the Apollo program, NASA had a bunch of literal rocket scientists there working on building components of the Apollo V. There's actually more smart people in Alabama than I thought who are the offspring of those scientists who stayed in Alabama. Why they stayed in Alabama heaven knows.

Im old enough to remember the 90s when global warming was not a political issue at all. It was taught as settled science in my jr high and high school. I hate watching all our potential for advancement slip slowly away like a dying Alzheimer's patient. Our collective consciousness seems to have a degeneratative brain disease. I blame education privatization, parents are now free to choose schools that will teach the kids "facts" that are tailored to suit whatever ideology the parents want.

Dusk Dawg - Do you also think black people have a "chip on their shoulder" about racial profiling by the police? Do you think that chip is justified? If so then there's no reason why you should have a problem with me having a chip on my shoulder because of the anti-white racism of the left. Not acting like a racist a-hole? You mean like not saying all white people are born racist? You mean like not calling for the genocide of the white race? You mean like not calling for a "white tax" or for white people to turn over their houses and belongings to black people? You mean like not blocking white people from entering college campuses or attacking white people hammers? Is that what you mean? If so then you just accused the BLM movement of being racist a-holes. I don't, nor will I ever have one drop of white guilt. I'm not racist against black people. In fact there are many black people I have a lot of respect for... of course those are free thinking right leaning black people who don't blame whites for everything they do wrong or fail to do right. You're fighting a losing battle if you think you'll get white people knuckle under and whimper with white guilt. I will always be against blacks, whites, or any other color that vilifies whites and pushes a racist agenda against us.

Although sediments and the like would cause some sort of water displacement, a term Mo Brooks clearly didn't bother to learn, the displacement would be equal to the volume of sediment. If he's talking about erosion, the process of rocks being warn away over the process of thousands of years, the sediment put into the ocean would be tiny, minuscule, barely anything especially compared to the size of the ocean and the amount the sea levels have actually risen. So, in short, no.
@lorenzovaletti4951
@lorenzovaletti4951 6 жыл бұрын
it doesn't even matter on a geological scale, you would be ignoring subsidence (oceanic crust floats on the mantle like everything else, so isostasy applies: put stuff in, it sinks more) and tectonics. The whole discussion is a ridiculously embarassing bad joke. (I'm a geologist btw)
@drakekoefoed1642
@drakekoefoed1642 6 жыл бұрын
what happens is, tectonic plates go over each other, so the lighter rock of the crust continents floats up onto an oceanic plate and moves up. Also plates can push against each other and wrinkle up the in between, which is how the himalayas are forming. Yeah, they are still getting bigger. These effects sometimes bring seafloor up on land, and counter the erosion of republican hot air. without that, the surface would level out like 2k meters below sea level and there would be no land, of course. That might happen when residual heat from formation of earth is gone and the radioactive materials in the mantle and core get done heating

The day after we arrived it was 28°C/82.4°F. The middle of winter. At one point I received a call from a friend in Brisbane, Australia, my hometown. The temp, mid-summer, was much the same. Christmas 2016 I was in Brisbane talking to my niece in Clear Lake, in the south of Houston. It was early evening, the temp was 22°C, v mild for an early summer evening. Hot weather, cold weather for a year or 2 doesn't confirm climate. Climate is determined over longer periods of time than weather, hopefully that's obvious. If you make a line graph of the temps since just before the industrial revolution till now you will not see a straight line. Some years may be up a degree or two, some down, but the trend is up and up in climate time scales. People have devoted their lives to this research and they're the ones who should be listened to.

Trust me it's getting hotter! Here in East Overshoe, Vermont we used to have 4 seasons although Winter was the longest. Most people have Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall (here they're locally known as Winter, Mud Season, Road Construction and Fall a.k.a. Leaf Peeper - as tourists from lower Northeast States tend to board buses or drive up to see the Green Mountains in their peak colors which are a site to behold as long as we have warm days and cool nights!) However, in the past several years we've entirely skipped Spring/Mud Season and have gone from 50°F to 80°F in about 2 days pushing us right into Summer/Road Construction.

I'm curious how the trump supporters in WA feel about the warming trend with the record highs causing them to buy air conditioners. This is an area that didn't stock AC units until recently due to demand being almost nill. That same area when hit with a snow storm, snow shovels couldn't be found either.......

Mo is from Alabama. In North Alabama, we are wearing sandals, shorts and tank tops from April to November. Our trees and plants are confused about when to pop up. The heat is smothering. How did Mo miss this?

It's less than two weeks to winter here in Australia and all my deciduous trees retain most of their leaves. Looks like we are going to have Autumn in winter where I live.

I'm surprised Mo Brooks didn't mention the most significant factor, which is that every time a fish pees or poops, sea levels rise by a huge amount.

They are owned by the corporations causing the planet many of the pollution issues we are facing. Rape the Earth, privatize the profits, and socialize the losses. We can see the water is rising, so the usual denial they employ will not work in this situation. They can't blame their owners therefore they throw out these incredibly lame ass, and completely unproven theories. Rocks...lol!

You're not 'undeniably experiencing climate change', That's confirmation bias. The gradual increase in average temperatures is like your hair growing, in that you can't sense it. That's what makes it so easy to deny if you're conspiracy-minded like Senator Inhofe. People in rural Alabama, where there are no glaciers, will not be convinced by an appeal to their personal experience.

Well, my point was that there was a false claim embedded within the argument. The presenter implied that everyone can feel or sense the world getting warmer. I only use Alabama as an example of a place where the effects might not be particularly obvious to an uninformed person. As to my use of the word 'experiencing', well I'm merely quoting what was said, so it's not with me that you have a problem. As to my suggestion, I'm not going to pretend that I know how to combat deeply entrenched political partisanship. I'm happy to continue working from scientific rather than anecdotal arguments, building as much consensus as possible through those means, and working around the zealous hold outs.
