As much as I love Requiem, and think it's (and probably will be Aronovsky's best work), I have only seen it once, and don't plan on rewatching. The movie left burn wounds in my head that even over a decade after seeing it, some of those scenes haven't left me. I loved the editing pace and franticness though. This scene's lack of symmetry in the splits always made me wonder if it was to show how mother and son were in two different places, emotionally, though both have their separate addicitions.

Absolutely agree. Can not bring myself to see her break down as the movie progresses and all the utter filth their addictions and heartbreaks evoke. Haven't felt this with any other horror bullshit or medical scene I've witnessed (as a med student) but this literally makes my gut scream. Props to Aronovsky, man.

Everyone says this same thing about it. Hence, I’ve put it off for half a decade now. Gonna watch it now, for technical reasons I guess.

Storytelling and doing it with proper editing is such a powerful skill. Thank you for this vid as I am not much of a visual or film editor but I edit my podcasts and get goosebumps when I align some dialog or clean up another text to make it more powerful. Thanks!

Requiem for a Dream was the movie that sparked my interest in film direction and editing, so glad you covered this! Would love to see more of your breakdowns of this movie. All the techniques used were so avant-garde and outside-the-box at the time. It would be hard for anyone watching it for the first time today to understand just how different this movie felt when it first came out in year 2000. Also, don't do drugs.

It's masterpiece and is easily Aronovsky's best work. The editing is amazing and the soundtrack is equally outstanding. It's such a powerhouse of a film. I love it but it's an emotionally wrenching film to rewatch. Love your videos Sven : )

any Edgar Wright film, Don't Look Back, Muriel by Alain Resnais, anything by Chris Marker, Amer, The Strange Color Of Your Body's Tears, Anything by Jean Luc Godard, Terrence Mallick, there are many many more, these are the ones one can notice but in much quieter way I'd say films by Olivier Assayas, Victor Erice, The Dardenne Brothers, Lars Von Trier have a very particular way of putting their scenes together, the list can go on and on
