In our look at playing games on the minimum and recommended hardware specs we've come to Far Cry. A landmark game when it was released let's see how it runs on what Crytek advised back in 2004!

Great collab and definitely my favorite era of PC gaming. It's interesting that the game came with a DX7 codepath but it ONLY worked with NVIDIA cards. The Radeon 8500 is a peculiar minimum requirement for the ATI side.

Thanks Pixel much appreciated! It's really a fun era to explore which is why we settled on this game quite quickly for the first test like this. So many settings to play with and the fact it still runs ok on such a low spec system but then scales all the way into overkill territory makes it so fun to test.

Always loved your calm, clear and smooth style Rik. The final result of your video turned out great. Thanks for having me on this colab, I'll always be open to participate in projects such as this one. It's great being a part of this community, count on me to stick around and contribute in anyway I can.

Ah,,the first FarCry :) That was such a great game. I wish modern games would be like this. Linear gameplay with alternative routes, stunning and interesting landscape to travel through.

It really is such an interesting game. The only other one from the same general era I can think of with a semi-similar setup is IGI or I'm Going In. The bases you assaulted there also had large areas you could approach things the way you wanted but even that didn't get close to the glory of Far Cry! Nothing quite like it!

Rik, this is too cool! Thank you for sharing it and detailing your observations. This was so interesting, as I would've never thought to test Far Cry on such a barebones system. This is really tapping into something I never see much of--"budget" class retro hardware or, rather, running games on the bare minimum hardware possible. I've always been curious as to how CryEngine scaled and it's cool to see that it runs so well, being Crysis before Crysis, as you mentioned. The Radeon 8500 is a really sweet card and outlasted its lifespan. I do think the Pentium III 933 provided greater performance in this game than I'd have expected; I'm even tempted to try my 1.0GHz system, just to see how it runs. I do agree that the game looked muted, but the fact that it ran so well--awesome work, Rik! Thank you for sharing, this was truly informative!

Thanks for the kind words! It really was fun to experience the game on the low spec system for the day as again we have the luxury to nearly always be able to play on way overpowered machines comparatively. Expect more videos like this in the future I think because it was fun to make!

I remember when this came out! Of course, I have an original copy. Played it on my Pentium 4 1.6 GHz and GeForceTi4400. I found Crysis more enjoyable but this is a classic. Nice video Rik! Awesome collab with Sucra. Edit: That Abit BH6 is also a classic 😎

nice one! I played this couple of years ago with P4 3.2GHz, 2 gigs of RAM and X800 Pro. It was smooth except for one map with lava and lots of Fat Boys. My version needed tent AI bug fix since the AI could both see and shoot through tents
@RiksRandomRetro
@RiksRandomRetro 3 жыл бұрын
Sweet that's a good rig for this one! And I was wondering why I kept getting spotted through tents a while back when I tested the game on another system then I read up on the 1.4 bug with the AI seeing through them. Heck of a bug for them to leave hanging hah!

Haha yes a great one to use as a test bench no doubt! But that's a good point to consider what would have been a really beefy machine for the era. I think the ideas for these videos may be solely limited in what sort of hardware we have uh.. hoarded!

I tested far cry on P4 2.8 ghz and 128mb 9200se. And well it runs on low - medium, but i could swear it could run better on that card back in days. Maybe its 1.4 patch. That Slot 1 is beautifully machine, its great it runs at all.

Speaking of low end. I ran Doom 3 not to long after it came out on a 1.1Ghz Celeron (coppermine), 512mb SDRAM, and a 64MB Geforce 4 MX 4000 (PCI). Low at like 800x600 but, I didn't care.

Run it again with a overclocked GTX 285 @ 720P using my shaders + the texture pack. You will however want to run a more potent CPU than the DX10 era card. You already ran it with a 1st gen DX10 chip Boss, so why not?
