How do you mix your soil for 5 gal buckets for okra? I have never grown it before.

@@annscott6982 We only use miracle grow soil, used to use potting soil now use garden soil. Lots cheaper works just as good. It goes BOGO twice a year at Lowe's.

I've been growing okra successfully in Toronto for the past three yrs.

@@adellapie1589 I sowed mine directly into the garden. About half have come up, I resowed the empty spaces. Do you direct sow or start under lights? Do you pre soak the seeds for 24 hours, I didn’t but wonder if I should?

Very good on okra I have had a good year also your okra was very close together how far apart do you plant seeds and where you located I am in North central texas between sherman and Paris black land

You can always fast forward.

The plants in the video were planted in the shade to show that okra can grow in different conditions. In our region not many pest bother okra we have deers to do that.

We have done it both ways. Either way worked well for us.

For ant, I go halfway up the stalk and dust with selling dust, this way the 🐝 are safe and hopefully it will not seep into the ground. I do this every other day

Patty Stovall-Cowart no ma'am you should not have to stake okra up at all it will get tough stalks as it aged. They become very sturdy plants.

Soil temp is your biggest challenge. As I stated okra should be planted lastly when spring begins. The water situation is not really a worry as long as water does not stand for more that 72 hours. Best of luck to you and your garden

Plant now okra plants will bloom until late fall. We pick okra sometimes as late as November

@@resacarebel1868 Ok thanks. Soil temps are no problem right up untill December, its extremely hot and humid for the longest time. I'm just waiting for the rains to start again before i plant the seeds. We have these anticyclones which suck all the rain away, usualy followed by a typhoon which dumps tons onto us so that will be the time to sow. These few weeks I'm getting heat stroke watering too much to include Okra. I think I have the perfect spot. Its a bit rank and weedy and full of butterflies but just feels right. I just hope caterpillars aren't a problem. Do you need to cultivate the soil or do those roots know their way into the ground. It's fryable black soil.

Is there any blooms on it ? If not give it a few days and look again. Okra will start blooming slowly the all of a sudden you are overrun with it.. if its not blooming try curing some fertilizer of your choice into the dirt along side you plants about 8 inches from the base of stalk.

Depending on your growing region squash and zucchini may still produce a crop. Many other varieties of produce are able to grow in fall turnips kale lettuce just give it a shot. You only learn by trying.

Nematodes are an important part of the food web in your soil..if you grow organic it's not advisable to eliminate them...

andrew sanders the Okra is only 5 weeks old and 6 foot tall. I get more than I need and since that's the Crimson Spineless 80 it's does not get busy. So I tend to let mine stay thick. But each person has their own techniques..

andrew sanders you have pods on limbs ? What kind of okra are you planting? Pods do not develop on Crimson Spineless limbs . The produce on the stalks in the Crook between the leave and the stalks.

andrew sanders you should do a video and show your technique you have a channel and it's easy to do. I would like to see how you do yours. I like seeing other gardeners technical ways.

Several issues can cause this however let's look at the top two. 1 Did you apply any fertilizer? For okra plants I would go with a 10 20 10 that would cover the nutrient issue. 2 how much sunlight does the planted spot receive? The ideal time for okra in my opinion is 6 to 8 hours. So without knowing your area or your gardens nutrients those 2 items top my list of issues to look into. Todd and Karen.

The plant dies at the end of its growing season. Just pull the plant up and save one of the pods and let it dry out keeping the seeds inside. Just plant your harvested seeds next year and enjoy the bounty.

Depends on soil nutrients Mr Pete. I am willing to bet that it could grow well in a sandy soil. But shoot it would be worth trying.

Honestly I have never had to water Okra . Okra seems to do well during months with little precipitation. If I had to water Okra I would do so every 7 days.

Paul McGhee Good morning to you friend. First you should have plenty of time to plant.You didn't mention the region you lived however you mentioned zone 9 on a national chart that would indicate the Texas region I believe. Regardless of your location you should have time to plant a variety of seeds and still be able to produce and harvest. This will depend on a couple of things. 1.What are you planting? 2 .What are you planting it in. You mentioned shade in my spots, I have certain plants that can be planted in a shady area.Tgungs like Potato,Cabbage and other items are planted before many leaves come into play. The Gardening Rebel Hi friend I'm in San Antonio. Traditionally Zone 8B temperatures over the last few years zone 9 statistics tend to work well, at least for heat-loving plants. My question was concentrated on your okra topic. I've watched a lot of videos and how to use for okra and know they love the Heat and no they tolerate a ton of sun but have not seen a lot of information regarding pushing the boundaries into shade and how far that can go. My full sun spots are precious as I have a lot of mature oak trees on my property keeping us cool. Typically whenever I plant a crop that is new to me I will try several plants, one in full sun is recommended one in full afternoon sun with Evening Shade and one in full Morning Sun and full afternoon shade to test the light boundaries so to speak. Our native soil here is full of loads of clay and little Loom. Fortunately over the last couple of years I have been bringing in a lot of organic material, last summer I brought in 12 yards of wood chips about 6 to 12 in deep across half the garden and in this year I brought in 5 yards of fine wood chips already halfway composted that is a foot deep in full sun for 7 hours. I'm pretty sure I pulled some of those wood chips back the Oprah would do outstanding in either of those spots. I've been having to add a bag of soil here and there for my plants as 15 or so tomatoes, mostly indeterminate cherries with a handful of larger in determinants. I've got some greens under 50% shade cloth with about 40 kale coming up from seed getting ready for the fall planting. I'll transplant those in September ish. Little herb garden when I had to cut them back right before an unusual snowfall. They were waist-high. Had an irate back to my question I'm hoping it's not too late to get some Clemson spineless okra and the ground. I've got plenty of room for a decent-sized row for my young family of four. Tips on watering are welcome, it can easily be assumed that they will get no more than one inch of rain per month from now until September if that. As I mentioned before lots of shade and precious sunspace. How far can I push the okra into the partial shade by density or by hours and still be productive? Sorry I know that was a mouthful. By the way I'm also growing tropical and subtropical greens as annuals, similar to the way sweet potato vine Rose I've got Malabar spinach Egyptian spinach, Moringa or drumstick tree, Chaya, that one came back on its own this year. And I am making my second attempt at a massive chayote squash native to Mexico. This thing gets massive and the Squash tastes a little bit like cucumber and it puts out a tremendous amount of foliage that I can use for my compost bin. I apologize in advance for any typos I'm using voice to text and am on Bluetooth on the road and I'm able to properly edit.

Full sun works great for okra however I had the spot videoed .I just wanted to test the soil out . Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for your quick reply. I just noticed a comment on a different video from another Aussie who was loosing plants during last summer and thought it may have been because the UV rating were "off the charts" - in his words. His plants were about a foot tall - so he put shade cloth over them and they seemed to recover. I have just asked him for more info regarding the end result.

I’m in south Texas and we’re at 100F every day nowadays. My plants are about a foot high and I don’t keep them in the sun, I keep them under my porch in the shade. I know people say they love the sun and need hours of sunlight a day, but mine get sun once in a while, like an hour or two every other day, and that seems to be enough. They’re getting big with strong stalks and green leaves. If I leave them out too long, they’ll start to wilt. I think sometimes this sun is just too hot, it’s like fire to the plants. Climate change is a real thing. This sun isn’t like the sun I grew up with where we could be outside all summer long.

Not really , however if it is a rainy season I can see that happening.
