I LOVE the boating community! Brought a tear to me to see how many fellow vessels showed up to help!!! And they got in there and got it done!!! Best of humanity right there!!! I'm a single-handed female sailor--and I had a breach in my prop shaft on the night of Dec. 4, 2018... took on about 700 gallons on my 27ft sailboat. I was hand-bailing into my cockpit--and then hand-bailing overboard. I was close to hypothermia (in Southern California) when I was finally hauled out. Warms my heart to see all the aid bestowed on this sinking boat. Bravo, gentleman...Bravo!!

Brought a tear to my eye. All those fishermen we're just trying to keep a captain from losing everything. Rules on the water a completely different from land. That is why one of the reasons why I love being out in the water so much. People will not know you but they will do everything they can to help you. it's not about the maritime law it's about treating people the way you want to be treated

Its a Tender. That's how they were able to save the boat, because they have a fish pump on board, so they just dropped it into the fish hold and started pumping out water.

How often do you see assisting vessels save the BOAT as well as the crew? Very impressive how many vessels came to lend assistance here and did an expert job of getting that situation under control. Wendys skipper must have been thrilled. And as soon as the situation is brought under control, everyone disappears! Time is money, man, back to work! That's a hardy bunch up there in Alaska.

I operate Tenders such as the Amatuli, since the early 90's. Do you notice, that only the Tender has a portable pump to save the guy? I know that with only 32 feet of boat allowed, that space is limited. However, I have seen pacer pumps mounted on the rail of some boats, powered by hydraulics, and a suction hose to throw either over the side for washdown, or into the hold for pump out. In this case, both of those gillnetters could have pumped him out before the Amatuli got on scene. It is also, on a small vessel, THE biggest pump available! They should be mandatory! 12volt Rule pumps will not cut it if the leak is large. Having been sunk once myself, one can never have too many pumps!

Always. Unless your on kenai and break down during dipnetting. I was drifting out to sea and nobody even bothered. Luckily I had an electric trolling motor which somehow with one bar of power had enough to fight an outgoing tide at kenai river mouth to make it to kenai docks in my V-20’ tracker targa deep V. My brand new motor was wired wrong to batteries and fried the computer and I was dead in the water. Luckily the trolling motor had separate batteries.

Years ago, I worked in the charter fishing fleet from Indian River, Delaware for an "old school" captain. I had a reputation of being the best jerry rigger in the fleet (actually they used a different non-PC term). If we were anywhere close to a boat with a problem, I just got my small tool kit and a 5 gallon bucket and prepared to board. I cannot count how many sinking boats I have been on. We never called the Coast Guard, never lost a boat and never left anyone in the ocean.

Those kids were his sons, wasn't their first season either. It was a combination of a clogged bilge pump plus I believe they were trying to cut a net out of the prop. Lesson learned. Same boys are still on that boat and this season was super successful. Still could have gone very wrong. Fishermen look after their own.

As teh captain of the vessel you make decision as quickly as you can to save the lives you have aboard. I am sure the captain of this vessel did the same thing. You cant plan for accidents otherwise no one would ever have one. You just make the best decisions you can in the moments you have. That’s the thing though, these men are all tied together by the fact they’re fishermen. They belong to the same community in a sense, and all have a certain loyalty to it. They look out for their own, not so different from those split races. People who don’t have anything in common aren’t nearly as likely to have this kind of empathy for each other.

AWESOME DISPLAY OF THE "MARINERS CODE OF ETHICS"!!!! doesn't matter who you are or what you're doing on the water, if someone's in trouble, you drop what you're doing and get there as fast as possible. It's not like they can pull off the highway and wait for AAA. They'll last 20 minutes in that water at best..... Once you've been in that situation, you'll appreciate what's going on here. If i had to guess, its the prop shaft seal developed a bad leak when the net fowled in the prop. You can see the net over the aft starboard cleats. That is also probably why it was taking so long to fully sink. The water rushed toward ok the bow and raised the prop seals up closer to the surface wear there was less pressure, slowing it down a lot. But it would not have stayed up for too much longer thank god there are awesome people that the bystander affect does not affect on! Made me feel really good to watch.

That is exactly what I love about sea goers. No matter what, they stick together and come to the aid of one another, regardless of nationality, religion, or other. When you are on the sea everyone is your brother and sister in a time of need. Now, if we could only find a way to make that happen on land, this world would be a much better place.
