Rescued 1969 Olds Ninety Eight 2 DR Convertible. Will It Start, Run and Drive?

This poor neglected Oldsmobile has been sitting for 26 years. A tragedy. So we will resurrect this big land yacht, scrub it down and give it a good bath, fix a few things, and take it for a beautiful scenic drive on the coast. The 98 (or Ninety-Eight) series was THE flagship of the Oldsmobile lineup. This particular car has the big block 455, factory A/C, tilt wheel…..oh yeah it’s a convertible! Awesome.
My channel is for entertainment purposes only. Please don't repeat my shenanigans however epic they may be. Enjoy

How did you trust the brakes after sitting for 26 years. Did you do some off camera repairs?

I owned a 1968 Olds 98 four door. It had power everything ,windows door locks, antenna and six way power seats. Bought it from the company I worked for. Was the president of the companies car. In 1976 I got it for $300.00 plus 5 hours of free labour. What a beast that thing was. Cracked the cam 2 years after buying it. Couldn’t afford to fix it and junked it. Looking back, what shame. Thanks for sharing.👍👍🇨🇦

Saw so many fun memories about Cars of this era. A separate voltage regulator; high beam floor switch; speaker in the rear seat that always caught my hair as a kid; good ole point and condenser; fender skirts; dark green factory tented windows that kept the interior somewhat nice; details like the Olds emblem side markers and the big 454. My dad almost bought a 68 Olds 98 LS (Luxury Sedan) that was fully loaded. I was in JR high school and though that Olds was a beautiful mist green with the plush seats was nice, he bought a two door 68 T-Bird Landau with the 429 Thunder Jet that we kept in the family until I was out of high school. (Got to take it on dates) What a great car and the quality of Olds and American cars shows through by the fact that the top, windows, and just about everything under hood works. Great driver and worth saving.

This reminded me of a neighbor back in the day that bought a new Ninety Eight convertible every year. He started with a 63 Impala, then a 64 Impala and in 65 an Olds Ninety Eight. He bought a 66 and one of his kids totaled it. He then bought a 67 and that one had an engine fire and got junked. He had that one a while and then bought a 69. He moved away, so don't what he got next.

Oh man, did you ever bring back some great memories with this video! I owned a 1970 Olds 98 Convertible with every single option available on the car. My interior was white leather with black trim and carpet and a dark blue metallic paint outside. I bought it for $400 dollars in 1980, fixed all of the little stuff that was wrong with it (seat rips, dead AC and cruise control, trim pieces, etc) and i had it repainted in the original color (Earl Scheib for $129). I drove it for a year and then I sold it for $4800 when I moved to Spain. Of all the cars I've owned (about 35) this is the one I want back the most. Smooth 455 engine and tranny, excellent ride, and that wonderful convertible top that I always had down since I live in Arizona and we have great top down riding weather out here most of the year. Yours is in rough shape, but well worth the effort to fully restore it and to drive and enjoy it as much as you can. These beasts really suck down the gas though, so maybe not too much driving lolol. Excellent car to save buddy, and thank you for the trip down memory lane for me. Oh, about your dash lights....pull the front facia panel that covers the speedometer and everything in front of the steering wheel. Tighten down all of the screws behind the panel as they come loose and the for whatever reason the screws help make a solid connection to the ground (I think...). Mine did that at first until I did what I just told you to do, and suddenly everything electrical inside the dash suddenly worked flawlessly! It's worth a shot. Also, check the hydraulic hoses for the pump for the convertible top as they like to work themselves loose and spray oil everywhere.

Those are some great tips thanks! This is my first Oldsmobile. I was scared the hydraulics might explode but so far so good haha. Glad to drive you down memory lane. It’s a bit rough but 100% worth it to renew it, And we will do here on this channel. Thanks for watching💪🏼✌🏼

To fully restore is a rich man's game. Restore means *a return to original condition* and that is quite literally impossible but you can get close I suppose, which is what we really mean here, probably. Maybe you meant repair and conserve (stop it from further decay)? Better to drive it now and enjoy it instead of taking it off the road and starting a laborious disassembly and restore every single part back to new. Nothing wrong with driving a car that has some blemishes on it and shows its age but a *full restore* is something that is just not worth the money in regards to getting what you paid back out of it. This is not a 1936 Bugatti, this is not an investment. Y'all have a nice day and sorry if I rained on your parade 🙂

I dig your work, Chris. The New Yorker really turned out sweet; but this Olds is my favorite so far, and what brought me to the channel. Because I had a sedan version years ago (Palomino Gold). This brought back such memories; the sound of the 455 cranking, the tired QuadraJet, the little window in the distributor cap to set the points to perfection. I am stunned by the great condition of this one; the condition of the body and the mechanical soundness of this car sitting in the elements for 26 years is better than the heap I got stuck with in 1990 (first car). My dad bought it from his work after it was surrendered to pay a bill. He won an auction with the only bid of $139. Gee, thanks, Pop! 🙄

Of course in the summer running AC the mileage was horrendous around town - 10 mpg if I was lucky. Luckily gas was only about 40 cents/gal so it didn't hurt too badly. Gold with a white vinyl top and black vinyl interior. The AM/FM radio had the "Wonder Bar" where it would auto seek for stations. Loved it.

Probably snowing east of Lyons/Detroit area this time of year, but beautiful driving. Would cruise my 78 Cordoba up by Mt. Jefferson to Bend. Those roads are twisty but sooo fun!! Tons of old logging roads out there too if you have a 4x4. Took my Blazer out there and found some great trails near the Sea of Lava, lava beds outside of idanha/Sisters. It's other worldly out there. Looks like the moon with all the lava rocks and volcanos in the skyline!! Then about an hour east you hit the desert.. those roads are incredible. Love the potential! Oil your conv. top hinge points. Also use baby oil on all plastic and vinyl, the whole interior is made from oil base products, so put the oil back in it. Soak it really good with many heavy coats till it becomes soft and pliable again!!!! It will stop your seats from cracking. Also use super clean for first cleaning, caution, it's extremely strong but it REALLY cleans unbelievable!!

Great drive in a great find of a great car! Our family had a 1970 Buick Le Sabre 4 dr sedan, and then a 1974 Electra 225 4 dr. The difference between the two was surprising... the Le Sabre, for a large car, felt pretty nimble and the ride was decent. The Electra on the other hand had a great ride... not too floaty and quite sure-footed. It probably helped that it had a set of Michelin radials on it. It was a great car for the drive-in!

You shouldn't put Teflon tape on the temperature sender, it will insulate the unit and not give accurate readings. The threads are tapered so it will not leak if installed properly. Great save by the way, just found your channel.

Had a 69 Delta 88 hardtop with the 455 engine when I was a teenager in the 1980's. As a stupid teenager, I beat that car to death and eventually wrecked it. Wish I still had that car today.

That's not just a convertible, that's a boat! Great job cleaning her up, especially the interior. Runs good, too. Oh, take her to Midas to fix that exhaust leak.
