Күн бұрын

This week I tackle a Foetid Bloat/Blight Drone from the game Warhammer 40k. The goal is to paint this guy pretty quickly while trying to use a few different techniques to achieve a higher standard than normal. A huge thank you to Tim for sending me this drone, this was one of the models that got me to buy that first round of the new 8th edition, fantastic to paint, and awesome to look at, so thanks again man!

Donating Minis:
If you would like to donate a mini to be rescued on the channel then please send me an email with the type of mini, pictures if you can, and a little bit about the history of the mini! Donations have become a big part of the channel and I want to do as much as I can to share the story and history along with painting your mini! I do ask that the minis be at least partially painted, something you may have gotten on ebay, or just something that you started and never finished, that way it fits the criteria of a "rescue." I appreciate each and every person who has donated to the cause, you have all helped make this channel better for me and for everyone watching, so thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Commissions:
CURRENTLY ACCEPTING
Commissions are a big part of what keeps this channel going, I try and charge a fair amount, and in most cases, make a video to go along with the job. Not in all cases, but many. The type of commissions I am interested in are of a "rescue" nature. So something that you have had laying around, or something that you started, or someone started and didn't finish. If you want something new then I am still interested but please understand that if it doesn't fit within the theme of the channel then it probably won't get featured in a video.
I do commissions for $15/hour plus shipping and supplies. I will also give you a free estimate that I will honor for 6 months from the date on the estimate. Thank you all again for your submissions, and helping keep the lights on here at EMR!

Haha yeah! Another good practice to get into is using a varnish to lock it in to make sure that won’t happen, or just let it sit for a day and let the ink set. Generally I wait til it’s dry to the touch and spray a matte varnish over the model, that has been fine for me before.

It does technically work, but the inks have to be 100% cured. Another way to avoid the issue would be to varnish it before the contrast so you essentially lock in and seal the inks.

With regards to background colour, the usual rule of thumb with digital models, and I think it probably applies here to some extent, is to go with a neutral colour like a 50% grey. That way you minimise the amount of interference you get with a higher contrast dark or light background. Maybe something worth giving a try at least.

Easy way to avoid the ink and contrast problem is to quickly blast the mini with some varnish after the white ink. Ink is pretty delicate anyways, especially if you thin it, so this can prevent a few other problems while painting: like the ink rubbing off from drybrushing, over handling, oil wash cleanup and "eraser brushing". Also, black background for sure.

Great job, great video. I think with this model the black background let the camera focus on and brighten up this darker model. If it were a brighter model I assume it would look fine with a white background. But the white background will always darken the way we see the model. So unless the model is black or almost black, I think probably a black background is the way to go.

Contrast Paint works fine over white ink, you've got to leave it to dry for a while though. I tend to batch prime and zenithal white ink over the top at the weekend. If I come to paint a model later in the week I've rarely had a problem with Contrast, but have had the same issue same day.
@eBayMiniatureRescues

I’m sure if I let this sit and set up it would definitely be less of a problem, the other alternative would have been to varnish the model and lock in the inks! I usually do that too, but I forgot this time lol.

Awesome paintjob overall, my one nitpick as a very lighting-conscious artist is that the eye would not be able to cast light on the drone beyond the ridge surrounding the lens - it makes sense if it's meant to look like glow/glare, but to me it looks more like light cast onto the body of the drone.
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Very true, the light wouldn’t have gone beyond the casing for the lens, but in this case you could say it’s reflection from being close to something, just like the colors on the metallics, which aren’t realistic. Really though I like the way it looks so any reason that makes sense to justify it works for me lol :)

Try using Qtips or makeup blenders for the spirits. Brushes in my experience suck up too much spirit and you streak the stuff you want to remove. The qtips and blenders also do really well for dabbing removal which really is nice for raised areas where you dont want to get the color you're removing. It's the worst when trying to remove blue effect on copper runs all the way down an armor piece that's white because your dragged the tool on the edge of the armor trim

It is interesting you had issues with contrast and liquitex white ink. I recently zenithal shaded using the same with the same ink before using diluted FW ink to set under shades before contrast and had no issue. It had dried for over a month before I applied the contrast paint so that might be the difference.
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 4 жыл бұрын
My problem was not letting it cure. I’m usually getting stuff done real quick so I probably only let the ink set for maybe 15 minutes. Usually inks take 3/4 hours to cure. The way around it is to let it dry to the touch and then hit it with some varnish. That’s usually the way I do it, but there have been those times I’ve forgotten and ended up with a mess lol.

Lovin’ your open honest and easy going approach. White background seems a bit bright, some glare reducing the colour on screen. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on each paint or ink as the session unfolds, e.g. why Vallejo white? Why not another brand? And so on. Lots of action and time to see what you are doing. Good stuff. I struggle to paint ork diff koptas, lots of machinery ending up as a confused mess, I think you may have just shown me a way forward. Thanks.

Oh I really like the different tones underneath the metallic drybrush I also personally tend to paint wires and tubes red or yellow to make them stand out. The undertones work really well, and it’s low stress fun for painting! If this was anything but a speed paint I probably would have done the hoses coming out of the bottom end, I also skipped the horns, but because of that focal point with the eye you don’t really see them when you look at it. There is some color because of the inks, but it’s all overspray! Sleep? What’s that? Having kids makes that go away, I suppose in 18 years I might be able to get some lol.

Hi, I may struggle to articulate this but I was wondering if you'd be able to explain how you'd take all these techniques in order to apply them to Chaos/Space Marines. For example I'm painting a Dark Apostle at the moment and okay he isn't the smallest model. But I'm unable to see how I can go above and beyond what I'm currently doing which is base coating and layering highlights. I really want try something new technique wise but Space marine type models all seem so uniform and by the book. Cheers, Alex
@eBayMiniatureRescues

Thanks for the question! Here’s how I’d probably do it, and I might have to add this too my future videos list because it would be interesting to try, I digress; I’d prime the model black, airbrush brown ink into the shadows, do a top down spray of white ink, focusing on all of the upper areas a little more, near the face, shoulders. Then use a variety of ink colors to create the undertone, so green in the highlights, purple where the white and brown meet. Then I’d slap AKs streaking grime over the whole model. Once that starts to set up take some q tips or an old brush and remove some from the armor and anywhere that you want the color to show, then leave it to dry. Once it’s dry I’d come in with either a drybrush of Metal over the metallic parts, or for trim, use a small brush and stipple the trim to make it look like some of the metal is showing through the grime. So you give a sense of old battered metal with a lot of color, and a nice grimy white armor on the rest. For skin and anything not grimy just base coat and layer up like normal. That’s probably how I would do it, but then again it’s all about experimenting and having fun, so just try different colors and combos and see what you like best. The streaking grime can be completely removed with mineral spirits, so if you want to change the order of colors or anything else then you have that freedom. Hope that helps!!

White is good, but it can get splattered, so I just use a piece of printer paper and replace it. You can see some of the splatters in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gp2lqLap1NSnZo0.html . I'm still getting better at painting and making videos. At about the half way mark I smear the back with genestealer purple.

Nice build and details, I have a couple of questions to ask you. First what size needle do you use in your airbrush? Second what is your air pressure set at to paint? Thanks
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! For this model I used a Badger Patriot with a 4mm needle, and the air pressure depends on the paint going through. Most of the time you can get away with setting it around 25psi, but if it’s thicker paint then it goes up and thinner it goes down. Every time you shoot paint it will differ, so it’s always best to test it out on some scrap paper before you go for the model.

How did you choose which metal areas you wanted to apply the color and which color to create those more interesting metal filters?
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 4 жыл бұрын
So the shadows are pretty much a given with the dark brown, it’s glossy like metal and a natural shadow color. The purple and green are kind of arbitrary, you could pick any colors you want. I think a good rule to follow though it that darker colors like the purple stick closer to the shadowy areas and the lighter green closer to the highlights.

I have a question about the AK interactive streaking grime: what color did you use? What color grime do you recommend for death guard?
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 3 жыл бұрын
I generally use "Streaking Grime" which is what the color is called, it's pretty much a brown enamel, pretty dark. They also make a green one that I just got, but haven't tried yet, it has a different name though, it's called slimy grime. For Deathguard I've always used the brown one. Over green armor it looks great, and when you use it over a lighter white armor which a lot of people use with DG then it gives this nice antiqued white armor look that I really enjoy. Hope that helps :)

Hate to say it, but you should have sprayed a gloss varnish over your acrylics BEFORE applying oil-based AK stuff as it protects from the oils taking off the basecoats. Once you're then happy with your oil based layers, spray over with a Matt varnish to seal in both and bring it back to dull again...
@MrStatistx
@MrStatistx 4 жыл бұрын
Did I miss that or did you not varnish before the streaking grime? Any reason not to? From what I've heard you could damage the paint underneath when scraping away anything above it, if it's not varnished and also with varnish you could use white spirit. Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm still learning.
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 4 жыл бұрын
So the streaking grime with or without mineral spirits won’t hurt the paint underneath, it’s not water based so there’s really no chance of reactivating the paints. The reason to varnish generally, is to protect layers underneath, but you really don’t have to. I wasn’t scraping away at the streaking grime, it kinda looks like that, but I was using a brush to just move the paint around, because the streaking grime is an oil based paint, it doesn’t dry for a long time, so you can come back and manipulate it with a brush, and add white spirits to it for even more manipulation. As long as your not scraping at your model there’s really no chance of taking paint off :) that being said, if you gloss varnish your model before oils, the surface tension is lower so the oils slide around a little easier. It’s really up to you how you want to do it, if you like the look with a varnish then it’s a great way to go, but it’s not necessary. Hope that helps!
@MrStatistx

@@eBayMiniatureRescues Thanks for the explanation. I just bought a model to start working with streaking grime for the first time, so its good to know that I don't have to varnish (my airbrush is mid tier and cleaning is pretty extensive, so if I can skip varnishing, that is a huge time saver). Also didn't know that white spirit is no issue for acrylics, so I would have varnished unnecessarily when using it.
@eBayMiniatureRescues

I use a master g233 for varnishing, and spraying enamels like streaking grime. If it breaks it’s only $20. But if you want a legit varnish and not have to use an airbrush then Testors gloss and Lusterless flat are the way to go. AK also makes a good one, but they are pretty expensive in comparison. The reason to actually use the varnish before something like streaking grime is that it slides around on the surface a lot easier, so it will sink into recesses easier and clean up easier, otherwise yeah, you don’t need to varnish.

get a squeeze bottle with water. Dump out whats left in your pot take the bottle nozzle and put it into the pot near the needle in the direction of the front tip. squeeze the water through it and then blow the water out. Do that a few times then paper towel and wipe out the pot as best as you can. add new paint. Sometimes you may have issues with dry paint but this is the quick easy way. Always test out your new color on a piece of paper to make sure its true. Thats what I do. I used to do a full clean every time and it just took way to long. Maybe going from a dark color to like a white your yellow you could even use some isopropyl alcohol through the brush but always test before you spray the model. www.amazon.com/Economy-Bottle-Squeeze-Medical-Tattoo/dp/B00WTHLR18/ref=sr_1_13?crid=V9CQXWJNAGIZ&keywords=squeeze+bottle&qid=1581363260&sprefix=sque%2Caps%2C201&sr=8-13

Black. Maybe its just cuz uve got ur settings dialed in with ur black backdrop but with the white it definately makes the subject matter appear darker and thus less visable. The black seems to let the details pop. Again, possibly cus u havent experimented with the balances enuff on white but id still say black. Of course, i dont really know which is more accurate to how the model appears in person, but black to me makes a better video....least for now.

This was a color scheme I was waiting for my killteam death guard! Nice style. But one question. What did you use for removing the streaking grime color? And does this only remove that streaking grime and not the colors under it?
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 4 жыл бұрын
Mineral spirits or white spirits (depends on the brand) will remove streaking grime. I started by using an old brush to just physically remove the wet paint, and then moved to mineral spirits to really start removing it. And it doesn’t hurt the color underneath, it’s not water based, so it won’t reactivate your paint!

Grillmeister GVWZ I imagine even in Germany there would be some at an art supply store. This is what I use, you can also get it on amazon. Just ask or search for odorless mineral spirits, that’s what you want, it works for the streaking grime, and oil paints in general! Do you ever use metallic/iridescent inks with the airbrush (ie: Liquitex) ? Does it get damaged or badly clogged?
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 4 жыл бұрын
I’ve used liquitex gold and and an FW purple that looks iridescent. They are a little bit of a pain because the flakes are quite large, so clogs are common and the results aren’t always great. I’d recommend using regular airbrush metallics instead, and if you really want iridescent color then Turbo Dork, Greenstuff World and Vallejo make color shifting paints and iridescent looking colors that work way better through an airbrush.
