Yeah, I’ve wanted a bird for two years now and even though the one I like doesn’t need much I’ll still research about their species so I know what I need :>

It’s because fish, mice/rats, ants, reptiles and other smaller pets are considered “easy” pets. People see the way they’re usually kept, or just ask people working at pet shops, and assume that’s all they need. (Not saying pet shops are bad sources of info, but just because someone’s working there, they don’t always know how to best care for pets) I still think people need to do their research, though. Even if you’re looking to care for an “easy” animal, wouldn’t you want your furry (or less furry, as the case may be) friend to live the best, healthiest life you can give them? (Well that, and so many little critters are more interesting than people may realise)
@BardicSp00n3 жыл бұрын
Growing up I was always given goldfish as an "easy" kid pet. It took me until me teens to realise I was hurting these poor creatures through my ignorance and neglect. I now know that fish are absolutely not the pet for me due to the level of care they actually require, & I sort of feel like it's kind of a matter of respect for the poor fish I didn't care for propperly never to keep another one. I'm quite content these days to watch people like this who know what they're doing and enjoy seeing their happy, well cared for pets.
@NoArtisticLimitation3 жыл бұрын
@@BardicSp00n that’s sorta the same reason I’m not going to keep any reptiles. They need more care than I could give. Well... I could give them an average(ish) life, but average is no way to keep a pet. You want them to thrive under your care, and that’s something I have neither the funds, nor responsibility for, at this point in my life.

The thing with fish, sadly, is that barely anyone is told HOW TO take care of a fish properly. At least not by the people they get the fish from. I had a childhood full of beta fish I accidentally neglected and one of which managed to live to be 6 years old despite the circumstance of her life. I only learned that a beta should live in a larger tank with filtered water after we had her for four years, and my parents still didn't want to move her. She was an intelligent fish that always recognize my mom so I feel bad for having kept her in a bowl, even if it was relatively large. What I'm trying to say, is that some people neglect their pets unintentionally because of misinformation. Earlier this week my dad and brother found a kitten and my dad almost fed her cream before I stopped him.

I don't have the time, space, or money to be a fish hobbyist but I find it all extremely interesting and relaxing. I also believe that it's important for this information to be pushed because so many pets are mistreated. I personally had several beta fish when I was younger and had no clue that the tank they had been kept in was too small and that may have contributed to the reason they didn't live long lives and I'm sad to think of how many other pet owners are misinformed.

I had that same problem. I got a male beta fish when I was five and it died within two weeks. Granted, the bowl didn't get cleaned as much, I knew I wanted to clean it, but I remember blaming the adults around me for not caring enough to do so with me. Then I got a female which I kept in the same bowl and lived for six (or three) years and I assumed it was because the females lived longer. Then I found out about how Beta fish are actually supposed to live. My words of wisdom have continued to be ignored and then three more deaths happened. tl;dr if your parents want to get you a beta fish and they ask pet shoo employees for advice, scream at them. Maybe this time they'll hear you.

yesterday my science teacher brought his colleague into the zoom so that she could show us animals kinda like indoor field trip, and she showed us a stuffed owl first- *which was kind of strange* then showed us a stick bug in which she was holding with her finger and thumb and it was struggling the entire time, then she showed us an American toad, which i heard don’t require much but I still feel like it was kind of wrong for her to keep it in one of those small critter keepers.. there was nothing inside it but dirt and a very small water bowl. She also had a bearded dragon and a bunny but what scared me the most is that she had a horse shoe crab inside like a Tupperware that was very bare and only plain water inside it, she picked it up and put it upside down to show us the bottom of it, (it was also eating while she did this and she was poking the food that was inside its mouth as well) and I thought she was gonna take it out for only a few seconds but it was out of the water for like 4 minutes- the crab stopped moving completely and when it went back in the water it started FLOATING. after a few minutes it luckily started moving a little again but it was about to die and I’m losing faith in humanity :(

I agree with the needing proper research, I spent almost 6 months researching about clown fish and making sure i could get all the right materials/equipment. I FOR SURE needed it, I learned a lot of stuff i didn't know that I needed to take care of a clown fish. Its sad how selfish (pun NOT intended) people can be in wanting a pet but doing it the cheap way or not putting time and effort into making sure your pet is happy. Thank you Soda Pets for understanding this and helping the poor goldfish.

I raised ciclids for years and had such a balanced ecosystem they were breeding and water changes were only necessary about every 4 months. I know people won't be live it but it's true, I had snails that ate any excess food and waste and the summer kept the snail population down.

I feel like you should name that one goldfish hamburger because why not lmao- also im so happy you decided to take in these neglected fish, it makes me sad how people treat fish this way..but honestly not all people have the largest knowledge when it comes to fish care. Also the choice of using animal crossing music for this is very fitting!! ✨

This reminded me for some reason, of my high school biology teacher. He kept two albino piranhas in a gigantic tank (not sure of the exact size) in the classroom. He'd rescued them from someone who had neglected them by starving them. My teacher, after rescuing them, got them on a proper diet and they were super chill. Those fish were smart too! My desk was next to their tank, and every time I sat down for class, the fish would swim up to greet me. My teacher fed them before class, and everyone who came early would get to hear about how he cared for these fish.

They must have felt terrible in their old home, I'm happy to see them get a better life! That tank looked DREADFUL I couldn't even think about having my gold fish in there. Yes I have gold fish I love and care for them, they are living there healthy lives and it makes me full of joy their names are Beauty and Fantasy. I love them so so so much. When I was younger, I won a common goldfish at a carnival (you can already see where this is going) and me and my mom kept it in this tiny cylinder aquarium, unaware of how essential a filter or a large tank was at the time. Unfortunately, it died after just a few weeks. At the very least, during this time, we knew to bury it instead of flushing it. Still, I hate my past self for doing no research. Nowadays, though, I've done a lot of research, and I keep a ten gallon aquascape with a white betta fish as well as a small school of chili rasboras. I do all the maitnence myself, and have a filter and heater. Now that I know about proper fish care, I just want to thank you for giving those poor goldies the life I should've known to give mine. RIP, Little Hunter

Your black Moore mad me cry. I had a black Moore, he was an amazing fish. He lived for about 3 years. He was really playful and fun, he would follow my fingers and he would swim through hoops for special treats like carrots and potatoes (baked). He was just overall amazing, everyone cried when he died. He died because while I was away he developed a parasite, people were taking care of him by the way. Rest easy Trooper. :( (Trooper was his name because of how long he lived)

I bad a black Moore (names eugene) and he lived for about 3 years and went through a house move for me. But he got sick and I stupidly followed the advice from the local pet store (don't think I'll ever forgive myself for that one but they had a really good reputation and had always helped in the past and it was right at the start of the pandemic in the first lockdown and the vets I use don't deal with fish or reptiles) But it made him worse not better and I came home from work and he was gone :( broke my heart because I LOVED that fish.
