MaxluvsMya Thx. You can feed the kittens formula while momcat cares for the babies. She'll continue to nurse them. Using kitten formula can also be a way to teach the babies how to drink from a bowl, too. Formula also would let the kittens get pudgy little cuties. When they get big enough you can mix formula with dry kitten food to soften it so they can learn about eating solid food.

It's so freaking hard, prepare yourself mentally to give them up. Last year I found a 3 week old kitten in a car engine that the neighbors said had been there at least 12 hours but couldn't find the owner, even police said it was registered to a PO Box. After 2 hours she came down to me, we took her in, cleaned her, took her to the vet, all that stuff, found out she had a broken paw, damaged hips and internal bleeding, from some sort of trauma. Nursed her for a few days, she pooped blood and wouldn't move for a while, I didn't think she'd make it the first few days. Had to feed her every 2 hours, help her go potty after, the whole 9 yards. And after a week, she got better (-the broken paw). But since we couldn't keep her due to house rules, we hid her for a couple months, while her paw and hips healed and the vet to clear her to travel. We convinced my mom to adopt her, so I flew her to Oregon to deliver. That was a year ago and the anguish from leaving her still hurts. You get super attached when you care for something so young so extensively. We 100000% would've kept her if we could, she always feels like "the one that got away".

If a group of cats live together, the mothers may share the childcare, including feeding.

OTOH, yes, mama cats in a colony will share duties like nursing and other care, babysitting for each other. At least some do. It's more common if the moms are related, so sisters, mom and daughter, aunts, but also friends. Many cat and dog moms will help orphaned kittens and puppies, esp. if they have extra milk due to few babies in their own litter, they need the relief. Cats have their own feline brand of emotions and courtesy and compassion. Just look at the puzzlementt and concern in that mom cat's eyes when she's checking the new babies. I've heard stories of dogs or cats being experienced and super loving, to take in and nurse other kittens repeatedly, the same for dogs doing this. While you still have to be watchful, many times a mama will help out. Also, I grew up with a sweet old mama dog, so they can be very patient if given the chance.

I had a momma cat lose her kittens. We aadopted a 6 week old. Put her on floor. Momma cat takes one look says you poor thing. Pounces on kitten and starts licking and nursing it

yeah but not recommended with such sick babies; keep them quarantined until they are well, wash your hands and arms incredibly well between handling litters.... No use risking mom's own babies for such very sick ones. Didn't one of hers die shortly after this??
