A discovery by #NTUsg scientists has shed light on a process that protects against #alzheimersdisease the most common type of #dementia
Special immune cells in the brain remove beta amyloid, which are proteins that play a key role in driving Alzheimer's. The scientists discovered a "metabolic switch" that forces the immune cells to produce energy more efficiently, improving their ability to clear beta amyloid by 20%.
Drugs that target this switch and improve the clearing of beta amyloid could be developed, potentially helping to treat Alzheimer's.
