Yes, I lost the doll AGAIN so instead of actually painting the doll's face, we're just looking at original dolls and their faces to plan out what we can do next month.

I use micron markers to draw the features on my doll's faces and use water color pencils to color them in. I have zero embroidery skills but can draw fairly well and I've been pleased with the results. I like doing 19th, 18th and 17th century cloth dolls. 🧡💙

Watercolor pencils are a great idea! I might have to get a set and do that. Thanks for the tip!

There are so many more extant dolls than I expected ! I am a painter and I’d be happy to paint the face for you if you’d like me to!

Oh, I might send the next one to you. I feel like I need to try it once just to see how I do but if I don't like my skills, I'll send any future painted dolls to you to paint!

Cloth dolls are adorable and loved the examples you showed. I wonder if some of the faces were added later by the little girls. Once I added human hair bangs just to the front of a doll bonnet. I haven't made a cloth doll in a long time now.

There are so much variety in cloth dolls! Not a two look alike which is what makes it interesting.

Might they have used food colouring as paint, knowing that children might chew on the doll?

I don't think so but I haven't found a solid list of what was used to paint doll faces. I can find evidence of pencil, writing ink, and watercolors but there are others. I imagine they just used what they had around the house. But I don't see the Victorians caring if the kids chewed on toxic paint since it wasn't meant for food and they wouldn't be ingesting a lot. They weren't the group to care about non-toxic childhood toys-these are the same people who made toys out of lead that kids may also chew on and put arsenic in wallpaper that kids may lick. The Victorian mindset seemed to be as long as you aren't ingesting it frequently, you'll likely be okay.

I have this cloth doll. He's beautiful. He's red skeletons Freddie the Freeloader. He's very detailed. I was told Red might have actually painted his face and I should have him appraised? Is that a thing he did that you know of?

I don't know anything about collectable dolls but it might be worth having him appraised if he's vintage or antique!
