Playstation 1, 1998. My childhood right here :D They don't make 'em like this anymore.. Res 1, 2 and 3 were my favorites. Nothing compares with the music and atmosphere of these older survival horror games.
Didn't go for a high rank or speed run, this was for enjoyment and doing almost all you can in the scenario(Still got B rank). After all this time I still remembered pretty much where all the item pickups were. One of the only things I skipped was using a small key to get the custom handgun parts in the police station. I had so much shotgun ammo left towards the end of the game that the handgun became obsolete anyway. I will probably make the custom handgun in the B Scenario.
Uploading this in celebration of the Resident Evil 1 remaster coming out in January. They need to make one for this game!

I got this when I was 14 with my mum, it was rated 18, and when the games shop employee asked "This is for 18 year olds, is it for you or your son", she said "it's for me". What a great moment.

Same man everything about it filled me with dread and absolutely scared the shit out of me as a kid, the intro is literal perfection… the fade into the initial gameplay from the bleak intro text, wow, just, wow. The groans of the zombies are terrifying and something that only the 90/00’s could ever replicate I miss being a kid so much

I was 7 years old when this game came out and I remember my uncle (who was a massive gamer) got it when it came out in the UK. Went round his house to watch him play it, and the part where Claire is in the diner and all the zombies appear at the window terrified me, so much so I ran out of his house straight home hahaha. Sadly he passed away a few years ago and it saddens me to think he won't get to play the remake along with other games he would have loved like Resident Evil 7, Alien Isolation and so on. I think for a lot of us this game wasn't just a great game it also brings back memories of times, places, and people. Real massive dose of 90's nostalgia watching this. Cannot wait for the remake!

@@Nick_MGcoming from a guy who’s finished both and a big fan of the franchise. Seeing them being remastered has got so many of my friends playing resident evil and I think that’s amazing. I think the charm of 2 gets overpowered by the flashy new graphics but overall it’s one of my favourite remasters ever.

All Kendo had to do was stay behind the counter, like he did before Leon/Claire got in the room. That way, he could have ran out the back door or had enough time to shoot the 4 zombies. At least in the remake, he was smart enough to not get killed by zombies, but decided to go by suicide.

@@steelbear2063 He does know a lot, but also misses a few things, that's for sure. In none of his playthroughs does he pick up the ammo in the helicopter. It's also worth noting that if you use the shotgun and magnum upgrade, one should do so only when out of ammo as the gun will be full after the upgrade. This is a pretty average and slow playthrough. Not sure what all the saves was about, and guy sure did get bitten a lot.

I was on second grade in elementary school when I played this. Never made past the basketball court. Got cornered in the alley, dropped my controller on the floor and hyperventilated as the zombies ate Leons ass. I had nightmares everyday for atleast a month, and I still see zombie related nightmares now and then. It wasn't until I watched Shaun Of The Dead when I could not get freaked out by zombie movies. I still find them scary in a correct context, but I think I'm finally more or less over from RE2. 5/5, would have a traumatizing childhood experience again.

I had to re-live my teenage years playing this legendary game on RetroArch recently. It has aged great, and its just as great today as it was when it was released back in 1998. There were 7 games that defined console gaming in the late 90s. Resident Evil 2, Final Fantasy VII, Super Mario 64, GoldenEye007, The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, and Syphonfilter. There were others, but these 6 helped make PlayStation and Nintendo 64 that much bigger. Resident Evil 2 was released on Wednesday January 21st 1998.

Could be a reflection on the poor quality of modern games, and the general increased effort, and attention to detail that went into games in the 90's as well. It was a memorable game for many people, and is continuing to live on nevertheless.

@@justkf2things443 Modern games suffer from trying to do a significant amount more work in a much tighter schedule, relatively speaking. The resident evil games don't look super crap and great for their time because of the fixed camera angles, allowing them to render higher quality textures that don't need to move and be re-rendered in a 3D space, like a modern game. Notice how any environmental texture on the original resident evil games are noticeably higher quality than any character models. I think modern games are visually still pushing boundaries, it's a lot of the other areas that lack a lot of polish due to severe time constraints.

Sounds like a man with a classic refined taste for simplicity. I agree back then games were creative and amazing. Just like old school hip hop, without big corporations and the need to make millions these creators were able to produce classics. like MGS 1, Tenchu stealth assassins, many JRPGS, Mario 64, the list goes on. PS2 had some good ones too but as time went on things have gone to shit!!!!

My momuse to watch my dad play this game when I was a child and I would sit on the chair and watch them on the couch. He passed away in 2009 and I remember playing it years later and then in 2019 I was playing the remake with my girlfriend while my son slept in the bassinet. Crazy how this game stayed with my family for 2 generations. Love it the original and the remake.

The original really was marvellous, wasn't it? Love the bit where the zombies appear in the door opening sequence! As polished as the remake is I think this is unsurpassable, as old as it is - the music, the game design, the camera angles, the lot.

RE2 OG was in a league of its own; the remake in the eyes of CAPCOM and RE2 fans alike know the remake is not the same game, but a variation for what a 2019 version would be. Thankfully, RE2 OG exists and will always be apart of my collection.

One of the best things about these original games was the puzzles, the remakes left most of them out.. as well as the original soundtracks and sound effect were always awesome!

Ramake was good, but returning to watch this acrually makes me realize how good the original one was. More puzzles, better level design etc. Mr X. charsing us added some atmosphere but thats it. Here you can feel that more rooms with more puzzles actually makes me want to dive in again.

I love all original RE games too, but facts are facts!! Even the designers acknowledged all these flaws when doing the remake. A police building with no toilets? Lol

I remember back to 1999, when I first played this game, I had nightmares. Funny thing is I played this game on PC with one of my friends and we got stuck at the first screen because we were too young to understand that we can run through hordes of zombies and we were too scared as well.

I remember when I played Resident Evil 2 for the first time, I was 11years old and I felt so intrigued and distressed at the same time... It's something I can't describe that easily, it was like an odd sensation: the more I loved playing the game and the more I feared to keep moving forward. Well, I'm almost 30 now and I can truly say that Resident Evil 2 is still my favorite video game of all time.

@@rockerdude8000 I responded to NYG5's comment. He was talking about the cop who gets eaten by the zombies in the beginning of RE 2 remake. I know it's kendo in the original 1998 version who gets eaten. Before commenting you should understand what the people are discussing about. "Stand back sir. I have got this" is a dialogue from RE 2 remake and it wasn't spoken by Kendo. Voila, clear your confusion.

It's crazy how primitive the original version looks after not playing it for many years and and coming here after just playing the 2019 remake again. It looks to actually still hold up pretty well for a PS1 game though. I forgot how similar the map and a lot of the rooms are to the new game. They really did an amazing job with both the original and the remake.

I remember this game. I was hooked on it. I would play it for hours. When I got to the end boss I had hardly any life and no herb or any way to heal. I had to fight the final boss perfectly and not get hit at all. One hit and I was dead. I finally beat it. Lol. Back when I had no real problems and just hanging out with friends and playing PlayStation.

My older brother and I used to play the demo to this on the PlayStation over and over. I must have been just 5 or 6 years old and was utterly terrified. From what I remember, the demo let you play the game on a 15 minute timer. My god we knew those first 15 minutes inside out. What a nostalgia rush.

Was 15 when I played this. Wasn't really into video games outside the arcade, considered it childish lol. But I was home alone for the weekend and my brother's friend left his PS and this game at our place. Great atmosphere, great sound, everything pulls you in so well. That one set piece with the skinless thing crawling past the window (15:36) as foreshadowing to the scary-as-hell next room so impressed me that I kept playing til I finished the game the next morning. It only got scarier with Nemisis. Plus I loved the "herbs" mechanic since I had some sticky that kept me going all night

This was a good walk through. Like for example when you delivered an extra gunshot to the defeated birkin. Or when you stopped to listen to the theme during Ada's fall. It really gave life to Leon.

@@99dazemusic It's not. What with the cliche re write of Ada introducing herself as a "FBI Agent". The fact this is supposed to take place in 1998 and yet Ada has "secret technology like she's from the future and not to mention the 2050 looking underground umbrella facility. Mr X never became his Super Tyrant form instead he got designed with the look of the tyrant from RE1 HD Remake with one giant claw arm and one hand that still remained human in form...... So no, it's not. The original had so much more emotion when Ada fell and Leon thought he lost her.....voice acting in 1998 is superior to the remake version. Claire's story didn't make an impact like in the original. Not to mention removing Sherry's replaced gameplay through the sewers with escaping some made up orphanage that was nowhere in the original game. You're right. Nostalgia purist takes me over. I could care less about being able to aim at the legs of zombies and shooting them off to make easy escapes. It's easy gameplay designing in order to please the new gamers today who do not like a challenge in games anymore. OG RE2 fan for life 💀☠😈

I was roughly 5 years old when this came out, and of course, I wasn't allowed to watch gameplay for it. Ended up playing it in 2006, and it's been my favourite ever since.
