In person, Zak Khutoretsky radiates warmth-he smiles, he hugs, he calls his friends "brother." But he's also someone defined by struggle, a self-described hustler who had to fight for everything he has. His family emigrated to Minneapolis from St. Petersburg when he was a toddler, and his parents split up shortly after that. As a kid Khutoretsky had a good heart but a taste for trouble. He had a habit of getting kicked out of schools, and by the time he was 20 he was throwing illegal parties. Coming right at the peak of America's mid-'90s rave culture, Khutoretsky's events were legendary, and he did whatever he had to do to make them happen: forging insurance documents, lying to landlords, even selling drugs to offset costs. A run-in with the law eventually made him go legit, but he kept at it, throwing enormous raves and later opening his own club. Today he's a regular DJ at Berghain and gets booked all over the world, but he remains a cornerstone of his home city's scene.
Khutoretsky is an amazing DJ and producer, but as we see in this film, there's another quality that got him where he is today. From the beginning, he's been clever, resourceful and tenacious-devious, you might even say.

The Devious Ones. Now I know. In my own American Rave history I always have said, Rave Culture in America did not exist in places like Chicago & Detroit until it was forced into position from cities like Milwaukee & Minneapolis. DVS1 holds a key. Noted. This was a great video, too much respect for the man DVS1

As someone who lives in St. Paul, MN (I moved here for college and stayed because it’s a cool city) it makes me proud that so many people have come out of the Twin Cities including one of the biggest techno producers in the world, DVS1. The rave scene here isn’t super in-your-face and much of it stays really underground, but that’s why the people engaged in it really care about dancing and friendship and the music itself, and that’s a wonderful thing vastly different from how the electronic music scene is in Europe, where rave culture is so mainstream that a lot of people just care about being able to do drugs and look cool. Drugs are just as present in the Midwestern rave scene as anywhere, but DJs are able to play far more experimental music than you’re allowed to in Europe, because people here are happy to hear a huge variety of genres and appreciate more novelty (rather than people booing you when your set deviates from what the crowd expects). And that’s a beautiful thing.

As someone growing up in Belgium and having enjoyed rave scenes in Belgium, Germany and the UK I beg to differ. Been in the US for over 4 years now and having seen underground scenes in LA, SF, and St. Paul it’s nothing compared to the diversity and experimental sounds I have seen (and heard) in Europe. It’s possible I haven’t found my jam yet.

Had the pleasure of chatting to him after a gig a 2 years ago. Such a humble down to earth guy. No ego whatsoever. Had to ask him about his record collection! Saw him at Dekmantel the summer before which was absolutely killer so we talked about that too. Looking forward to seeing him next week again at Dekmantel!

Watched this for the fourth time after RA issued a call for people to check this brilliant episode out. I only just noticed DJ Bone in that photo around 20 minutes in. Now I realize how far these two go back. Watching them play on the 5th August at Radion at the Dekmantel by Night party is a memory that will forever stay with me. Well...me, a big Texan and an energetic Irishman. If walls could talk, they'd have a few ridiculous stories to share from that epic night.

Thanks for making /posting these!! It's so nice to here Electric Indigo mentioned - who'm I met through very close friends in the underground techno scene in NYC / Primarily the Killer Parties thrown at the Robots space by Khan and Gilman. She was utterly sweet, sharp, and amazingly talented - though, (lucky me!), I met LOTS of talented producers there. I'm so glad her career has blossomed, and I got to know her on a more personal level at the very beginning. Cheers and Best! .ant
