OMG! I've been looking for a solution to this problem for years! Got a sale on watercolor paper 20 years ago, stocked up, and now it's all blotter paper. I've recently tried acrylic matte medium mixed 50/50 with water, and it's not bad, but it still doesn't behave like a real gelatin sizing. Can't wait to try it! Thanks, Ian💗

Hi Ian!! I love your in-depth tutorial on sizing and how it makes a difference in paper. Your sketches showing the paper at a microscopic level are really helpful. I never realized you could resize paper!! I enjoyed watching your experiment- the brushed on method seems to do the trick! Thank you so much for attending my premiere today. I look forward to your Great Pumpkin Challenge watercolor painting, my friend!

I usually spray my paper with water when it is questionable. It is amazing how quickly it soaks through. It is very obvious in a short time. I had some Winsor & Newton paper when it was a new paper that had bad sizing. I think when it is moved against other paper, that damaged it too. I'm going to try this, although I think I'm going to make it with more water and probably heat it until it is clear, like when making Jello. Heating thickens it. I think it would soak in more when warm. I have been finding that my small off-cuts that I carry with my to experiment on are the worst, which is why I'm thinking that so many are blotters now!

Thanks Ian, you explained that so clearly - much appreciated and that I can put to work right away. However, the questions from me are: 1/ Can one KNOW the paper needs resizing before starting a painting - just because it is older? Or perhaps it is /or is not one of the top brands? 2/ And what do you suggest on folk using less than 300gsm/ 140lb paper? Will resizing improve its qualtiy? 3/ And what if only a part of sheet needs resizing - one thats already been painted upon (and the painting is still continuing in severl stages)? Can we resize a section perhaps and edit the section that became grainy? The latter is what I found today ... Keep up the great advice .....I like your approach and I am subscribing to your broadcasts.

basically size make a new surface for the paint to sit on so you should be able to paint over the painting below, the sizing only repairs the surface and will not improve any thing, have a go at testing thing, if the paper is not good you dont have any thing to louse, surface sizing works on any paper you want

Wonderful demonstration! One request would be to provide the actual amount of water used to parts of gelatin. It looked like two packets of gelatin were used, but I didn't hear the amount of water. I recently decided to try resizing some of my paper that was not holding up well to masking. Most often the paper was lifting when the masking was removed. I am hoping the resizing makes a difference with that problem.

Hello! Thank you so much for making this video! I have a lot of expired watercolor paper (the consequence of hoarding paper sigh) and was figuring out what to do with them. Unfortunately I saw your video a bit late as I’ve already ordered watercolor ground to test on my old paper. This would have been a more economical alternative! May I ask as this video has been posted for several months now, has the gelatin reacted in any way after this much time has passed? Has it changed the color’s paper? Also, would it be advisable to paint gelatin on old paper right before use, or can i paint several paper and keep them in stock for a while (i promise to use them up as quickly as I can!) so sorry for so many questions, I hope you are doing well and staying healthy!

the painting done on the experimental test paper is still good but I did make the mix a bit strong and would make it a bit more weak if i did it again, doing this to paper is not ideal and putting the watercolor ground on may be better but as you say a lot more expensive, if i would be doing this I would do 1 or 2 sheets at a time and use them asap, I hope this answers your question, thanks for your interest and experiment with bits of paper to see what you feel is good for you.

@@ianjackson5834 Thanks Ian. And since I made my comment about how long the food gelatin would last, I smacked myself in the head when I quickly remembered the gelatin used by paper manufacturers doesn’t last! That’s the very reason you’ve come up with a ‘fix’ for it. 😂 And BTW, I’ve also learned of a sizing product made by Holbein that’s mixed with warm water (expensive I think) and Daniel Smith’s watercolor ground, also with some water added to it if your goal is to fix ‘bad’ or old paper. Thanks again.

As an aside, I offer this from Utrecht: "Rabbit Skin Glue (RSG) is a by-product of fur/hide and meat ...Most edible gelatin is derived from pork by-products. Compared to hide glues, food gelatin is processed more intensely for flavor, texture and digestibility. As a result of this intensive processing, the proteins that make up edible gelatin are shorter, so food gelatin would not perform as well as Rabbit Skin Glue if used as adhesive or sizing.

It’s very difficult to work with. I’ve had to do one or two complete base coats over the entire surface before beginning the painting to get it to accept the paint at all. Do you have any thoughts or solutions for this problem? I have dozens of expensive full sheets …and all I’ve tried are doing this!,, UPDATE!!! MYSTERY SOLVED! IM AN IDIOT ! After several of you told me to check the ‘type’ of Arches paper… I double checked watermarks, googled some of them and discovered this startlingly FACT THAT EXPLAINS THE PROBLEM : The paper was Arches Huille paper…. For OIL painting! It is literally impregnated with an oil based sizing! No wonder water was repelled! I thought I was going crazy! But I was simply stupid! Thanks all… live and learn… I guess!

I tried gelatin (yes, store bought clear gelatin) dissolved in water - applied by brush. It seemed to help with reactivating the paint on paper better but did not help with absorption. PVA - water mix - that did not seem to do anything , if at all, it made the situation worse. Now I am thinking maybe calcium carbonate, glue, acrylic, gelatin mix would help?
