I wasn't satisfied with my original test runs of the AMD RX5700 and RX 5700XT and wanted to dig deeper and see how it really stacks up to the Nvidia RTX 2080. And wow... the results are impressive.
In this video I benchmark and test AMD's new Navi graphics card, the RX 5700 and compare it to Nvidia's RTX 2080 for projects in Adobe Premiere Pro CC, BlackMagic DaVinci Resolve (16 beta 5) including BlackMagic RAW tests, playback tests, render time tests. I also threw Handbrake into the mix, but that didn't go so well...

In a previous video with Wendell you talked about not having good benchmarks for audio processing workloads. I talked with one of my friends about it and we have some benchmarks you can run that specifically measures legacy FPU performance which is what most professional and prosumer software on the market really needs. Most software on the market do not use AVX to any significant degree but instead uses legacy FPU instructions. We might be able to make some USB latency and stability tests too for use with MIDI but that would typically be platform, or motherboard, specific, not CPU specific. Let me know if you'd be interested in such a benchmark suite.

I'm not surprised AMD reached out. You are showing a completely different segment of the market for their video cards and have great test methodologies. Their implementations are really rough right now, I think they could really do well on the creative side while providing better value. Thanks for looking into all of this.

It comes down to marketing and Microsoft's favoritism to NVIDIA even though they are clearly nowhere near as efficient as AMDs GCN/RDNA technology. I understand its business but discrediting/crippling AMD's more advanced and matured shader-core technology (DirectX 11) for the sake of keeping NVIDIAs sales up was still a low blow. Especially, when AMD offered them Mantle when the Xbox One and their cards in general where under utilized - Microsoft turned their heads. AMD cards are still under utilized even with DirectX 12 programmed Engines due to parity. Death Stranding , Horizon Zero Dawn and a few other games before it using exclusively the DX12 API, show the RX5700 trailing NVIDIA cards that cost nearly twice as much. But, people will always see the fastest card on the charts, regardless of rather AMD is better bang for the buck. AMD could easily just throw more shader-cores on a board and beat NVIDIA even with their technology under utilized but its defeats their cause by playing a pissing contest with NVIDIA.

@@randommiker Kind of a wierd necro response but I'll bite. Its about driver support for encoding. The AMD drivers and implementation of types of Encoding in particular like H264 and H265 start out bad and end up even worse. Your conspiracy spam isn't really relevant to this video or my comment. AMD NEEDS to update their encoder on the driver side to utilize the powerful hardware they offer before they will become a serious contender for streaming creators. Its unreal that they haven't' updated it yet.

Would you recommend using a Ryzen 7 1st gen alone for Handbrake batch encodes, or enable a 1080ti for the encoding? Am I wrong that for x.264 or x.265 it's CPU only anyway, or has that changed somehow? I've also noticed that if I limit it to 8 threads instead of the full CPU, there isn't much of a difference in speed. I'm assuming that's diminishing returns on that thread count. The nice thing about 8 threads instead of 16 is I can run the batches, and game without any performance issues whatsoever. Great content. New subscriber here.

Plus, from what I saw on Puget systems tests, the Nvidia cards blew the 5700xt out of the water so have things changed? It's as if this video is an outlier in my research as an Adobe creative suite user. That being said, I am still trying to decide between the 2070 Super with a r9 3900x or save money on the GPU by getting the 5700xt and then upgrading to the 3950x. I think saving the pretty substantial difference in cost between the 3600 and the 3700/3900 and using that towards a 2070 super with nvenc is a really competitive setup. COMPUTE GRAPH is the most important thing to look at with NLE, 3D or copy doesn't matter nearly as much, also video decode/encode graphs are important as well to see if HW GPU is used. If there is 0%, it's not used, no matter how slow rendering is. IMHO of course.

Yeah, the 5700 XT was about 20% behind a Vega 64 in their DaVinci Resolve Benchmarks. One big difference between Puget and this EposVox test video is PCIE 4.0 ... in theory that shouldn't make a difference, but it might. The Resolve manual always highlights the importance of getting your graphic or graphics cards in the right PCIE slots.

I trust these numbers, but I'm sooo confused about why every other article I read comparing the 5700s to the 20x0 series says otherwise... They say that even the 2060 super beats the 5700xt by 25% in Davinci Resolve... Any idea as to why??

Thank you very much for this benchmark! There are many outdated benchmarks which tell us, that 5700 (XT) is much slower than the 2070/2080. But nowadays the difference is negligible. What matters is the difference in price. Can you please make a benchmark for different HDD/SSD setups for Resolve? E. g. putting sourcefiles on HDD, caching on SSD, output on HDD - and different variations thereof.

Great video, tyvm. You really do have an absurd amount of knowledge when it comes to the topic of video tech. I'm a bit strapped this month due to recent upgrades but I do plan to sub to you next month as I feel I have a decent handle on the artistic side of vid creation but my tech side is terrible and I think your knowledge could help bring me up to speed. Incidentally do you think AMD will be able to do something with their x264 encoding for live streaming? At this point I feel that is a consideration to buy Nvidia for those who want to live stream and off load the stream encoding to the tensor cores while using cuda and cpu for the game. Another thing to consider that I havent heard too many ppl talk about is yes the new navi cards are cheaper but most are waiting for 3rd party coolers which will most likely increase the cost from stock and at that point would perhaps bring the price closer to the 2070S. I dunno what do you think?

Thanks much! Definitely prioritize your finances first, hehe. They're working on the encoder. I genuinely believe there's just a switch or two that needs flipped somewhere - and then lots of updates trickling down to the various programs and libraries - for it to be a lot better. Partner cards shouldn't be that much more expensive, but we shall see.

This sounds like for video encoding the 5700XT is a bit of a bargain next to Nvidia's offerings. Especially after a few driver versions fix up some of the bugs. Especially since a lot of the bugs are going to be fixed by the time that partener cards come to the market.

Hello, would you recommend a RX 5700 XT for Premiere Pro ? Will not do a lot of effects and mostly would have video with the same resolution (4K) and FPS (30) from a Panasonic G85, Go Pro and DJI Drones. I’m not a Pro but will be annoying if I have to many crashes or glitches or whatever else. Can’t decide between an AIB 440€ RX5700XT, an AIB 400€ RTX2060S or an AIB 520€ RTX2070S... PS: Really don’t care about Ray Tracing...

Think I read somewhere that Handbreak’s VCE support is only for one half of the process (I’m remembering that it was decoding) so it would help if your source were H.265, say, but wouldn’t show much performance difference with any given change to output codec.

I'm currently useing a Vega 64 for Videoediting, it's fine for normal stuff, but if I have to work on some effects heavy projects, it's really bad. So I thought I had to switch to Nvidia, but this shows me, that I don't have to. I will wait a bit for AMDs new cards and will look in to it than, but I'm really hopeful that I don't have to spend as much as I though I had to, to get better playback and export times.

@yavnrh
@yavnrh 5 жыл бұрын
The GPU usage graphs correspond to various hardware engines of the GPU. Depending on the task you work on you will see utilization in different places. Video encode/decode will fill up only if the app knows how to use the dedicated GPU hardware that accelerates video processing. If encoding is done via general-purpose compute it will be reported on Compute graph instead.
@EposVox
@EposVox 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I am aware. My point was most of this was conveyed on "3D" for Nvidia whereas "Compute" for AMD. Due to the fact that CUDA stuff usually just utilizes the normal 3D cores, and OpenCL is more of a compute-specific task. And playback stats for the GPUs typically show heavy video decode usage but rendering is more leveraging compute.
@yavnrh
@yavnrh 5 жыл бұрын
3D vs Compute might not mean too much. Both execute on the same hardware resources eventually (shader cores) and how the work is assigned may be up to the driver or the app (in modern APIs). Usually the benefit of distinguishing them is realized in more complex apps like games where you have varied workloads going on at the same time (graphics - visuals, compute - simulation, post-processing).
