How to deal with clients ? How does a job come to you ? When should you buy kit ? and many more questions were discussed here in this 1 hour session.
I was delighted to be asked to be part of this panel with my good friends and fellow industry colourists Daria Fissoun CSI and Cullen Kelly, to discuss Color Grading presented live at ResolveCon on day 2.
Thanks to Casey Faris and the team at ResolveCon for such a great event. was a pleasure to be a small part of it. Check out Casey Faris channel to see the two days of ResolveCon in its entirety.

So, so so glad that this has been posted sir. I was multi-tasking between making tea for she-who-must-be-obayed and running back to my computer to watch this. Next time can you please ensure that all this runs on GMT? If questioned just use the immortal words "Do you not know who I am?" And as for buying kit, I'm firmly in your camp. Buy it when the fancy takes you, which is probably why I have enough kit to open my own filming and editing shop. But as they say, and in my case especially, "All the gear, and no idea". 😀

Hi Frank!! Good to hear from you...and BTW congrats on your sub count which is growing healthy over time!! Top job!! Glad you enjoyed this panel discussion - it was a lot of fun to talk with Cullen and Daria - two of my faves!

@@DarrenMostyn I really should complain to KZfaq. They keep omitting the "K" from my subs count. 😀 My growing subs count is indeed a very pleasant and welcome mystery to me, especially as I have never once used the KZfaq mantra "Subscribe and hit that bell notification". Hope you didn't have too much jet-lag.

It's tough for front lighting when there is a screen behind. I had to grade a club/live show from a band that had a huge screen behind them as part of their show. The light that gets reflected for a camera pushes it way up in IRE and makes it tough on exposure. I noticed when this was being presented that same problem was evident. Might be a consideration for next year. I loved that you guys let the other person talk. Shows respect and being polite. Not sure if it was by choice or not, but I feel like you should have had a segment on your own. I enjoyed both Cullen's and Daria's segments. Would have enjoyed having you do one as well. Oh well, what's that old Rolling Stones song? - "Can't always get what you want."

Hi Jim. We really didn't plan this too detailed - we knew a very rough idea of the questioning but not what each others answers were, so that made it fun live. I loved that we didn't all agree on everything as we all have our own experiences proving again that no two jobs are the same or that one answer fits all - experience is the only uniform answer here - Casey and his team made it really easy for us to be chilled and just enjoy the session, which I very much did. There was no time allocated for me to do my own session on the weekend, but happy to if they ask me in the future.

Wow those are so consoling problems you guys shared 😅 I'm glad to know that im not the only one who hate those time constraints and confirming challenges. Coming from an I.T.department , i still love troubleshooting equally as Grading .. i was happy to see the same energy in you all 🙂 🙇 highly informative session...Thank you Darren 🙂.

Great discussion, I myself bought the grading monitor first, with a Mini Monitor by BMD for it, then a faster computer, painted the studio neutral gray after that, bought a fast and big Raid, then a used Tangent Element Kit. Good monitor is paramount for me, the panel helps going faster and makes the client feels relaxed because you are faster.
