RESOLVED! Qi Charging Problems - iPhone 8 Plus in Toyota Tacoma

Күн бұрын**Update from 1/19. Just got back from the Apple store where I switched out the iPhone 8 Plus for an identical unit. The new phone has zero problems and charges very well in the truck. This is apparently an iPhone hardware issue where some devices don't work properly on the Toyota Charger. There are several cases identical to mine that can be found on Tacomaworld as well as in the Apple Support Communities.
I'm having issues using Qi Wireless Charging in my 2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD OffRoad and would like to see if anyone has any suggestions. I'm using an iPhone 8 Plus with an Otterbox Statement case that I purchased directly from the Apple Store. If the phone is not in exactly the right spot on the charging pad, amber and green lights begin to flash and iPhone will not charge. The only way I've found way to remedy the situation is to turn off the truck and restart the ignition. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
**Update - Tried charging without the case and the result was the same. Otterbox Statement case is not the issue.

Ive tried different phones... case no case everything. Its a well known problem these toyota chargers are crap. Most people have the issue where it will charge only for a few sec..maybe 30sec max theb disconnect and blink. Toyota doesn't care.

...I came here looking for a solution, I had the same issue with the Iphone 8 plus, and now my new iphone XR, I had a rubberized case on the 8 plus, an oh by the way it would work with a Qi in house charging pad in the case, but only out of the case in the truck (2017 Tacoma). it seems to work intermittently with the XR, seems to make a difference where the charging port is positioned; works better if the charging port is facing the light.

I have the same problem with my iPhone X and 2016 taco. Haven’t figured out the fix yet either.

Hey man. The fix is pretty simple. You need to swap phones. I found that my original phone would do this in any Toyota truck you tried to charge it in. Went and swapped out for a new phone and all is well. It's been working perfectly for the last month. I believe Apple is aware of the issue, as there are several mentions of it on the Apple Support community and Tacomaworld as well. I contacted Apple Support on chat and they created a ticket and referred me to the Apple Store. It was pretty painless. Please follow up here and let us know the outcome.

Negative, this is not an Apple problem, this is definitely a charger or Toyota problem. Have multiple Samsung devices and it does the same thing. Chargers extremely slow for a while then blinks and doesn't charge and often overheats! Fix please!

dang just got my tacoma...I'm having the same issue, but it doesn't matter what phone I use...ive tried 2 Samsung s7's and an 1phone X....if I restart the car it'll maybe work 5-10 minutes....but then both leds flash...even if it's cold...and it keeps blinking even if I turn it off and on....

That's a new one on me. Mine was 100% phone related. Get a video and show the dealer.

*Resolution 1/19: Happy ending! The fix for this issue is to replace the iPhone. My device would cause the blinking issue in any truck I put it in. After replacing iPhone at the Apple store, i cannot recreate the issue no matter where the phone is placed on the Qi charger.

Why don't you just take the case off the phone and see if it still acting the same?

Hey I saw your comment on my channel. Have you tried this without the case to see if it happens? Have you checked to see if you have need to do an update to your Toyota? I ended up doing an update on my. Below is a video on how to check if you can do an update. Yes I have. It actually seems worse without the case! I have appointments next week at the Apple Store and the dealership to try and solve the issue. Hopefully, we'll get to the bottom of it. I'll update with the fix if we're successful in figuring out the issue.

And the software is all the latest. I'm not sure about the firmware on the truck I've done all of the available over-the-air updates. I don't know if the Entune software has anything to do with Qi charging, but it's usually best to have the newest stuff installed. I've had the truck since May of '16 and the original Entune software was pretty problematic. Fortunately, they got that all worked out before you bought yours.

Toyota Tacoma Tips and Tricks ..... I am starting to think that maybe the wireless Qi chargers were defective??? Man I am sry. I hope you find a solution. I have used mine for no longer than 30 mins since my trips aren’t long and I have no issues. I would recommend that you try someone else’s iPhone 8+ or iPhone X. Since my works your welcome to try my phones but I live next to Anaheim, Ca. I dont know where your at. Good luck and please let me know if you ever find a solution or post a video or link on mine so other Taco owners know. Sry and good luck.

Toyota Tacoma Tips and Tricks .... yeah put a plus if any is that they should be pushing updates. Like I said on my truck, it told me I needed to do an update without me initiating it. Maybe that update is different? Regardless, I would tell them to you guys need to fix this. Wether it’s a software update or replace the wireless charger Qi since your truck is under warranty. I would ask for this before it runs out. Tell them you have the latest phone with the latest update and your buddy has no issues.

Will definitely post the resolution when I find it. You're correct that the truck will occasionally do an "Over-the air update," that will work out some bugs. Usually those happen when the phones release significant code changes (IOS and Android updates). The dealer also has the ability to update at the firmware level, and this must be done with a memory card. Usually they won't check your firmware or perform these updates unless you ask or have problems that are addressed by the updates. Keep an eye on the Toyota forums and do a quick search for Entune and you can check to see that you have the latest version before you go in for regularly scheduled service. If not, usually you can just ask and they'll do it for you.
