In this video, I'm demoing a series of Lead Pipe exercises that I have written for myself. These are the result of a progressive and methodical process that I went through over a long period of time. Please feel free to comment or leave your questions below.
Check out my website where you will find general information regarding private lessons and live performances.

Happy Practicing!!

Thank you for sharing your expertise on playing the leadpipe. I have followed Javier Antonio Gonzales' progress with this method for some years now. Set myself the goal of developing my skills on the pipe over lockdown. The smooth connection across registers and your high range impresses me. More work to do on my part. Thank you again.

This is great, apart from anything - I noticed more in the Bai Lin variations I can see you flexing / compressing your upper chest area. This is a fantastic video all round. Thanks! C.

Thanks Philippe I’ve been finding lots of interesting things from doing leadpipe stuff and watching you gave me a little boost of courage to get past the wall between 1st line F and A above!!

Thanks, Ansel! Your performance in Russia was incredibly inspiring! I appreciate you watching the video and I'm touched that you have found courage to go beyond what you thought was possible. I can't wait to hear where it takes you. :)

Fantastic video Philippe! Really great to see/hear the smooth leadpipe gliss across the whole range. I’m working on getting the gliss smooth on the way up at the moment (finding it much easier on the way down!)

Dear Kind sir🌻🌻🌻. I’ve been struggling for years to succeed with this exercise . I’m so frustrated 😢🥺😩😢Me and most likely , hundreds of desperate trumpet people , would be over the moon if you could exactly explain what the tongue is doing . What is going on ?! Please , please make a video !! Safe our trumpet life ☘️😍♥️☘️🍀

Help me out I saw or heard zero relationship from what you were doing on the lead pipe buzz and the metronome....minus that you’ve given me some great ideas..thx

Hi Pebble Beach, thanks for your question, early on in the video, i said that the exercises should be played more or less in time ( around 1:34) . Indeed, I could slow down the metronome, but really, the metronome is for breathing in time, and I believe that I demonstrated that pretty consistently. The lead pipe glissandi should be prioritized to be played smoothly and not rushed. Any resistance should be worked through, so playing in time for those purposes is not the main objective. I will make it more clear in the next video. Thanks!

Sorry, I just don't get lead pipe exercises. I've done them because a lot of players say they're good to do, but I don't find they do anything for me compared to the other things I do, like free buzzing, mpc buzzing, long tones, flexibilities, lip bends, pedals, etc. I can see the benefit of those techniques, but I don't see (or hear) that lead pipe exercises make any difference one way or another.

I would be happy to walk you through how to properly apply it via a private lesson. I can assure you that it does help when done as prescribed over time. It's not a quick fix and results may take a while to materialize depending on your commitment to improving your control over the entire range. I hear the difference in my students, and so do my students (and their band directors). Also, this is a supplement to all of the other stuff you already do, including bends, long tones, etc. Not meant to replace or be considered better or superior to anything you do, it adds new dimensions to your sound and control over the range when done correctly. It Works! You just have to develop it over time and trust the process. Happy Practicing!

@@TrumpetEeps Okay; I'll keep an open mind. I just did some lead pipe stuff. I can get the high D but i've never been able to get the F above that. I may take you up on a lesson; I'll try doing a couple minutes for the time being.
