Thank you for putting this video up. I'm doing a paper on humane trapping for an ethics class right now and I've never actually seen one of these in action. Like I had the basic concept of how it worked but I could not picture what happened when it went off. Video is so much more helpful than pictures.

ArashiTsurugi There not 100% humane, it does not always kill them instantly, if it fails, it will be painful, almost as bad as the beartrap(ilegal) or Press trap(ilegal in some states)

PvPandaPanda lol suuurrrreeeee pvpandapanda, if you used 330's regularly you would know that they are capable of killing wolves[ but not good to use] I have never heard of a 330 failing to kill anything the size of a coyote of beaver, you obviously aren't a trapper

Modern trappers use appropriate sized traps and sets specific to the species they are going after too. Our objective is to hold the animal there until we arrive. In order for an animal to be held there the foot needs to be intact and undamaged, that's how you hold an animal in a trap. So we do go out of our way to minimize damage to joints and feet when using foothold traps.

I see some legitimate concerns in these comments, but I want to make a couple of things clear. A 330 set for beaver is usually set under the surface of the water, often under ice. It's not a threat to domestic animals when set this way. It also eliminates many ethical concerns. 90+% of the time the beaver will be killed by the trap. The rest of the time it will be stunned and drown very quickly.When used properly a 330 probably results in less suffering than traditional deer hunting. Either you kill the beaver in a few seconds or you don't. Not very many animals walk away from this set with a mortal wound.They either die quickly or they escape completely.

I've been beaver trapping with 330 conibears since I was 12 years old, I've been caught 1 time nothing broken but it hits damned hard and quite frankly hurts like a mother f'er I've caught probably 60 beavers in my time in 330s. I've caught exactly 1 beaver that survived. It was with an older 330 which is now retired. And he was caught by the base of the tail, sitting on the bank waiting for me. He sustained no harm from it and was dispatched by shooting. But yeah even without ice these traps are super super efficient. Most times beavers dont even pull my guide sticks out.

Everything on a beaver can be used. First You would skin and stretch the pelt . Also remove the castor glands near the tail which also can be sold. Then the meat can be eaten or used for bait on the trap line.

These are the best traps in my experience and mindset also. The double spring insures a quick humane outcome (smaller single spring traps may be quicker to set, but would always recommend buying a double spring model, I think the animal suffers less this way, just my own opinion). I never used pan traps, was shown this type of trap by an older trapper back in the mid 70's.

Conibear traps are VERY effect traps. I've been using them for 7 years now for trapping woodchucks on my property. I've caught 43 in the past 7 years. Took 2-3 years off though for health issues. Got 5 this year along with 5 possums and 3 skunks. I use 160s. Always use a setting tool and safety catch tool when setting them!

I am a hunter myself (not a trapper) we are having issues with folks setting these and similar traps up on crown land, directly off heavily used walking trails. I take my dog hunting/walking with me so as you could imagine the last thing I want is to see my dog caught in one of these... I have read that prying them open by hand is not the most efficient method. Could you possibly do a video of how to disengage these traps in the quickest manner? If a video already exists could you possibly post the link for me as I cannot find one as of yet... The thing that gets to me is where these traps are being set in my area, they seem to have been set up by some sick fuck in hopes that a dog will get snagged. I am all for trapping where it is needed, or even off in a remote area but right by walking trails seems like they just want to cause a problem.

Polecatt SRK Thank you for watching and your suggestion. As an ethical sportsman it would concern me if I saw a 330 set on dry land next to a walking trail. In my area the 330 is mostly used as a beaver trap and are always in or completely under water. I would check your local regulations on the use of these traps. If these traps are set illegally I would spring the traps and/or contact DNR. All traps should have an owner tag attached to the trap with all of the trappers info. Likewise if the traps are not tagged I would remove them. A trapper can not afford to loose to many traps and will move on. If they are set legally I would not take my dog to that trail, try to inform others of the situation and always keep my dog on a leash. The incredible power of the 330 does make it difficult to open by hand and trying to do it quickly could lead to disaster for yourself also. Thats why I made this video to inform people who are not aware of these traps. Thank You again.

Polecatt SRK Holy giant F bomb!!! I don't know trapper laws... I like eating critters too, but right off of a "heavily used/popular" trail or in "your area" or any area where people frequent... doesn't feel right... I'd grab a long stick and junk 'em, sad if it's someones dog, sadder if it's mine, but imagine someones kid... oooo and freaks me out to know that these things hang out in or underwater. All those times me and bestie were "swimming in the woods". And I was always freaked out by swimming next to dams.

Local story of a dog getting caught in one of these. Once the trap shuts on an animal's head, is it possible/easy to forcibly open the trap? I'm guessing that's not what you would do, because of the risk of it slipping and clamping on your hand.Does a person normally dismantle it before reseting?

Unfortunately, it happened again. In my area, someone’s dog just died from this kind of trap in a forest. Sadly, it was not a quick death. The owner said that the dog was yelping for a while, she left for help, and came back to see the dog dead. 😔 It’s why I came to see this video. I have never heard of a conibear trap before.
@Trapperdude
@Trapperdude 5 жыл бұрын
CanadianRM4 A dog is still a bit large even for a trap that size. Most states here in the US have a law that after you reach a size bigger than 5“ x 5“ the trap Hass to be submerged in the water at least halfway some states half to be fully submerged. There are exceptions where you can put larger ones if it is in the air more than a certain height. It is possible to get it off the dog in time but unfortunately if you do not have the skill and knowledge of how to use the trap then it is very unlikely you will get it off fast enough. Not to mention that the dog will most likely not be holding still for you to remove it more easily. Which is of course understandable. Unfortunately very few people anymore and easy scheme of things know how to use most traps and so they have the wrong view of what they do and how they work. I am myself try to always be aware of animals in the area that I do not want to catch. Sometimes it happens and it is unavoidable. I caught two dogs last year in two separate leg holes. They were perfectly fine and released and had no damage done. Unfortunately sometimes with traps like the 330 body grip trap you may set it in the water and the water level in a creek or a river may drop Exposing the trap. It is why you have to check them every 24 hours. In the state of Missouri you can check body crab traps every 48 hours.

Carry a piece of rope to aid in releasing yourself or a pet from a conibear, and talk to the game commission in you area about what their trapper ed program is like and maybe suggest improvements in areas where it is lacking, because dogs getting caught in conibears is a trapper ethics problem. 330s shoulde NEVER be set on land, 220s should only be used in cubby sets if on land (and even then I think 220s are a little large for land use) and a good trapper never sets a kill trap where there is a high chance of catching a domestic animal. PERIOD. Anyone who does otherwise is an unethical trapper, and should not be accepted in our sport.

From what I've seen on other You Tube videos, animals suffer a lot before they die in these traps. So, no I don't see these traps as humane. So I will be live trapping a couple of groundhogs I'm dealing with. But I'm going to try some other things so they don't set up house keeping under my shed first.

Our community has lost two family pets (dogs) to Conibear traps this winter. I clicked on your video to see how lethal they are. While out walking with her dogs on a trail, one woman witnessed her dog George's head caught in a baited Conibear trap. She says he died a slow death while she struggled unsuccessfully to free him. Please don't let that happen to your dog. "Boardingpass04" (below) posted a disgraceful comment. Surely he can handle his frustration over the neighbour's dog in a more mature way.

Damn, that's sad. Where were the traps set? Most states limit the size of traps that can be set on land, and most trappers are ethical enough to limit themselves. But this sounds like some idiot was setting too close to trails with unselective sets. This is clearly an ethics problem that should be dealt with through a better trapper education program.

+Frank Johanson This is not a snare, it is a deadkill trap. They're only inhumane if used improperly ie as a leg trap for larger animals. Hunting animals is natural. Needless torture (like leg traps) is inhumane, but this isn't that.

they may seem humane, but these things kill more pets than any other trap, so keap them away from residential areas.

That's where you're wrong, I phrased that different than I meant to. I am an animal lover, but I also believe in the circle of life. Predator and prey, kill or be killed, and so on. Animals kill each other in more violent ways. Traps like this make me mad, if you want to kill an animal, get out there with your bare hands and do it like other animals and our ancestors. Traps are mean because the victim doesn't get the chance to fight back. That is gross and cowardly. Gonna strangle a baby next?

Should be illegal to own these type of traps. I guess they are better than leg traps, but still unnecessary.
