This video, featuring Mr. W from sciencemusicvideos, explains how a respirometer can be used to measure the rate of cellular respiration in small respiring organism. The video sets up AP Biology, IB Biology, and college students to do independent inquiry by explaining how a respirometer works, and demonstrating the need for experimental controls.

some books says as CO2 would be replaced by water then we would measure the volume of water . Is It correct ?If water comes inside, the water goes in to cotton and base so that the organism will be affected by the base . How do You explain this . From the beginning , how water enters in to the system while the system is closed ?

What is the reason that the volume of seeds is measured and not the mass?
@sciencemusicvideos
@sciencemusicvideos 4 жыл бұрын
This is a great question, Leva. You could measure cellular respiration by the loss of dry weight (as carbohydrate is turned into carbon dioxide and water). But because the seeds are wet, it would be very hard to measure a before and after difference in such a short time frame, and water would confuse your results. It's much easier to measure the decrease in volume, and because we use KOH (which absorbs all the carbon dioxide), then the change in gas volume can be attributed to consumption of oxygen during respiration. Hope that helps! Mr. W

to kill bacteria and other organisms on the seed because they can also respire.
