As you said in another video: We can STOP worrying about what we eat, drink, or wear when we live in a community that works to provide what we need. It goes hand in hand. Less anxiety. More productivity. More generosity. Less anxiety.

Little Bird you ask, why do you think she’s the ONLY Bruderhof member with a KZfaq channel? I don’t know if she is or isn’t the only member with a channel. I found her channel after watching the BBC program. There may be others. I’ll do a search when I have time. If people are not being held against their will, I am in favour of letting them live in peace. If their beliefs differ from mine, so be it. If I were inclined to interfere in some other groups belief system, it would probably be a group that compels women to wear burquas, or one that throws gays off of rooftops, or practices FGM, or leads to honour killings of young women who want to marry the partner of their choice. If the B are doing any of that, then close them down.

These students are in our Global Scholars program, where they have an opportunity to more deeply explore social justice and the importance of service, personal choice, and structuring a life that reflects their core values -- they're an absolutely incredible group. Not all have fully grappled yet with the extent to which they /can/ make choices outside of their current normal, if they wish to do so, and the lens you're providing is a wonderful nudge to their thinking. I think what most are asking is why do men look like they could easily blend in with the rest of the world in 2020, but the women's wardrobe is very dated and amish-esque? You can buy or make plain, moden, modest women's clothing. Why aren't the men dressing more plain, like only button downs and trousers?
@BhappyD
@BhappyD 3 жыл бұрын
Rebekah Bryant What I have heard from several of the Bruderhof women in response to this question, including Laura, is this is just the style that they most prefer. They don’t seem to care if they look “outdated” or don’t blend in with the rest of society, nor do they care if the men wear clothes that do blend in more. It’s hard for us on the outside to understand because we are so used to the way we live, and it’s a similar mindset of theirs that they don’t understand us and our attraction to modern clothing or flashier clothing because they are so used to the way they live as well. The way they dress is what they are used to and it’s what they have always known. It’s comfortable to them, and from their point of view they don’t see any practical need to change things and conform to modern society if they are happy the way things are. It may look old fashioned and plain, but it’s what they desire to wear, and they don’t seem to care at all about how it looks to the outside world. As long as they are happy with the way they dress and are choosing this life freely for themselves, I don’t see why it should bother anyone. Clothing to them holds no value other than practicality and modesty; a foreign concept to us, but a comforting and welcomed concept to them. I could certainly learn a lot from them and their rejection of materialism and their non-conformity to modern capitalistic society’s ever-changing trends. We all could.

I feel the same. It is the button down shirt and the head covering, that evoke the old times. And to me it seems almost intentional. Of course you can say that women's clothes changes more than men's clothes. But I also have some pieces maybe for 10 years now and still I don't look like from another century. And since they buy clothes from today's shops for men (jeans, t shirts with pictures), they could buy also skirts and simple t-shirts for women. No judging, if this is what they like, that's ok :) just wondering... :)

I'm glad you mentioned, what was left out in the documentary and talk about the way things are handled in your community. It is a thing, that happens quite often sadly, due to a lack of time or research or just the fact, that the person in charge want to prove his point of view and not all the facts. The way of living in a Bruderhofgemeinde isn't my way of living, but I deeply respect your way to live together. I think in many ways we could and should take some of your way of living together, sharing and keeping the materialistic things of live simple into our own lives. Because cool stuff won't make you happy, but a meaning in life does. I stumbled across your channel, because I watched the documentary, that was recommendet to me. Only news to me is the head covering change- I noticed in last couple videos that some ladies do not wear them. I think that is a good choice to have, not necessarily for the vanity or “”modern “ reasons, but more because I know that constant wear of tight head coverings can actually create some permanent hear loss( personal experience). I love your simplicity, have huge respect for Bruderhofs pacifism and for trying to contribute as well as be an example of better life to this messy world. Keep up the good work!

I thought the people making the documtentary was very benign. They mainly showed what the protagonists want us to see, their selfportrayal. That is okay with me, but I really can't see animosity in the documentary. They could have talked to people who have left the Bruderhof community. They could have asked about power structures. When you have no income on your own, then you depend on the community and some people rule the community and others have no choice but to obey. Abuse seems likely to me. They could have asked why the young lady went to London, where overcrowding, lonelyness and consumerism are more extreme than in other parts of the country. Do the Bruderhof people hit their children?

Great video Laura! You make a good representative for the Bruderhof if I may say so. It's great to see that the Bruderhof is so involved in the outside world around them, rather than being a closed, stuck in tradition church group. I used to live in the bruderhof in the late 80s and early 90s and they have made leaps and bounds in the way they relate to the people outside (and inside) the bruderhof for that matter. I grew up with your Dad & know your Mom and especially know your dad Edward well. He was a great guy and I enjoyed the time I spent with him when he was still single in the Maple Ridge Bruderhof. Thanks again for your videos.

Trousers are still durable, modest and cost effective, so I don’t understand why they can’t have a few pairs.
@AnnieDiscepoli
@AnnieDiscepoli 3 жыл бұрын
One way to think about it is that modest clothes are not distracting to others. Modest clothes don't catch the eye of people because they are plain and not form fitting. As a female, I find it almost impossible to find a pair of trousers that aren't form fitting. Women's pants are often tight and revealing in order to attract attention and not necessarily because they are more comfortable for the wearer. Skirts are actually quite comfortable and freeing, although to someone who is not used to wearing them there would be an adjustment period.

Andrea C. Culottes are fantastic pants that are not form fitting. Paper bag pants are as well. Flared jeans and wide legged jeans are also out in most stores this year. I don’t like form fitting pants either and have endometriosis so I need to wear looser pants around my abdomen. Lately though I’ve been living in sweatpants...quarantine life :)

Totally agree! And the fact is this is sexism. Women get a uniform (inc skirts), and not allowed to wear pants, while men don’t. You can try to contextualise it all you want and tell people to actually like the skirt but it’s a very simple problem that could be very easily solved that they choose not to because religion is still scared of female bodies.

Is there a standard design of some other kind of arrangement? Genuinely curious so I hope you see this! Ps: Your love for God is inspiring. I just watched the documentary...it hit home when the guy spoke about his family leaving bruderhof for awhile when he was a teenager...he and other family members eventually went back to community and his comment about sense of belonging sums up everything...isnt that the essence of humanity? Every single person needs that more than anything, belonging. And that is not what our society is based on...it cant be when the focus is on self...you walk up a street or drive through a town and NO ONE is out...they work or school and back inside the home...no mingling with others outside their home, no children playing with others outside their home...we are a selfish society. So we have no sense of belonging and we try to fill that void with anything and everything. Where is the peace in that for anyone?
@williambunter3311

Safe Haven; I'm sorry to say that the sense of belonging anywhere, which we crave, is being attacked by the ambitions of the globalists. Even the notion of Nationhood is being scoffed at by politicians and the mainstream media. Thankfully, God has given us His word and we know that those who accept Christ as their Saviour and Lord, will have an eternal home where He is. Those groups who are demanding a lawless world (defunding the police and closing courts of law) and open borders ( i.e. no borders), will get their wish; and their dream will become their nightmare when they live under the totalitarian world system soon to come, headed by the lawless one, the 'beast' ( Rev.13). The apostle Paul tells us who are believers that our citizenship is in heaven. We all want to be loved and to love. We all yearn for that sense of belonging. Only the Lord Jesus can meet our longings. Those that put their faith in Christ will be richly loved and blessed for eternity.

I have always pondered how it would be to create less formal faith communities in an urban setting, or even multi faith communities of care. One thing that is happening in my area is the development of Mutual Aid Societies throughout our capitol city, where people help one another with basic needs, even dog food or pampers, etc.Help out folks in pther ways as well, clearing snow, etc.

I stumbled upon your channel by accident and feel I've learned so much by watching several of your videos, thank you for taking the time to make them! I understand the modesty part and not wanting to buy into the fashion industry or even giving your clothes too much thought, and I completely see how that could be oh so liberating in a way. But I still struggle to understand why modest (both in the sense of covering up and not showing off) and cost effective have to mean, for lack of a better wording, unflattering. That actually boggles my mind way more than shopping a communal closet, possessing just enough outfits for one week, only wearing skirts, choosing to cover one's head or getting married in your everyday clothing. Still, loving your videos and could listen to you talk for hours!

This is great information. Thanks for answering questions. I find that "documentaries" ultimately steer the viewer in one direction or another, and by leaving things out or only focusing on one aspect of life, they can miss the whole story. I wish they were more about showing the truth and less about selling the narrative. Again, thank you for your time to answer these questions.

I totally agree with clothes not defining you and it's sad people see that as a be all end all in today's society. If you look at extreme minimalism, with few belongings and few clothes, that's seen as thoughtful and freeing ones life to things thelat tie you down, but people vow to do this freely to be closer to God and it's the weirdest thing they've heard of. I think it's liberating. Love you spirit Laura 😊
