This phenomenon of “self identification”, where one can identify as a member of any group and must be treated as such regardless of one’s actual actions and beliefs is absurd. Partly because of the excesses of certain “takfiri” groups, the Muslim community in general and especially the scholars are very reluctant to openly declare anyone as having left the fold of Islam, again no matter their words or actions. We need these clear lines once again, and the confidence to call out those who overstep the boundaries. Related to this issue, Mohammed Hijab’s recent actions has definitely shifted the Overton Window in this discussion towards a more robust approach in delineating acts and words leading to clear kufr. The most concerning thing about the criminalisation of conversion therapy is how it will impact children with gender identity issues. Currently the NHS has a rigorous process of vetting and verifying whether a person genuinely has gender dysphoria. When the US went down this route it lead to a 4000% increase in girls aged 14-24 starting the transition. In the US now dysphoria is self reported and a young person just needs to sign one waiver and they can commence hormone therapy that same day. The worst part is the vast majority of these girls are not actually dysphoric and are sucked into this lifestyle. The signs of genuine gender dysphoria are clear and well reported, but its a crime for a medical practitioner of any kind to question or advise against this whim. The testosterone that they take leads to uterine cramps and in some cases is so severe that they need to have hysterectomies.
