Just rest and fuel - pasta etc. I'm running Silverstone virtual tomorrow after it was cancelled (lockdown). Taper week Fri-22k, Sun-16k, Tue-8k,Thu-8k,Sun(Tmrw) Race ! Foam roll a lot and a bit of stretching, back off strength work from mid week.

How do you work rest days in when on a run streak? I've been running every day since the first lockdown, started off with 1 mile a day; apart from last weekend when I did 10k on consecutive days, I only do two runs longer than 5k in a week, a few days apart. Next week I will be forced to take a 2-week rest but not because of injury. I won't be any position to run but I'm really looking forward to it mostly because of no work, not because of no run 😀

Haven't had a rest day since February 16th. However now I am working from home I have about 23.5 hours of rest almost every day!

Running in 2020 has been a lifesaver for me mentally, and physically and my rest days consist of running channel videos. 👍👍🏃🏻‍♂️

Me too John. I was all about weights for 20 years. Since lockdown I have taken up running and cut back on the heavy weights and it’s changed my life mentally and physically too.. keep smashing it John 🏃🏻👍

As someone with fibromyalgia, I always have to take rest days to let my muscles recover. I used to feel guilty about it, especially when I saw other people exercising every day, but now I just listen to my body and take as many rest days as it needs 😊

If you want you can check Robert Morse chanel about your helth issue. If u want to cure yourself there is an anwser on that channel. Raw foods $ herbs baby! Good luck, no1 should live in pain, but medical doctors known nothing about helth sadly.

I used to get incredibly bad muscle/bone pain. I then started taking 10,000IU of D3 with 360mcg of K2 (MK-7) daily and I haven't looked back. Not prescribing this to you of course, you must do your own research/get your own advice. But I have read some really good success stories of people with fibro and higher dose D3/K2 supplementation. If you do go down this track, for your own peace of mind, have your blood tested for blood calcium and parathyroid hormone levels at 3 months into treatment just to make sure you don't have hypercalcemia from the D3. Extremely rare at doses under 30,000IU of D3 a day though and at 10,000IU you're pretty safe.

I'm not sure how common this is but I plan my training and especially rest days along with the weather forecast. I save up rest days for the worst weather possible.

You should consider going out on shitty weather days too. It helps to be prepared in case the weather is headious on race day!

@@rodrigoolivos1648 You're right and I do that sometimes. If you wait for the perfect weather you won't do much training. But nevertheless, it feels much less of a sin to have a rest on a particularly bad day.

Rest days have been incredibly important for me in getting through couch to 5k whilst managing achilles tendinopathy. I forced myself to take 2 rest days between every run and have managed to get up to 5k whilst also improving the health of my Achilles and calves.

The most important thing is to listen to your body. It will tell you when a rest is needed. Alternate long and short run days. Go for a walk, or relax on the couch. There is nothing wrong with eating ice cream and watching football on a rest day. Rest is key.

Its so easy to chase the runners high everyday. As any runner will tell you running can become very addictive. I am guilty of running while still slightly injured and suffered later! Rest days are important of course and this video is useful in reminding us of that fact. Well done Anna and Rick.

I'm so grateful for this video! Failure to rest and recover was a major factor in my injury earlier this year. I've come to keep my rest day holy out of necessity, thanks to information on this great platform. Also, I'm fascinated by Sports Psychology, and always love to see more information on that (even though you always do a great job on that). Finally, I'm very interested in how the rest and recovery period should vary between younger and older runners.

I have found that a good old fashioned walk on my rest day helps the need to be active. Keeps the legs moving without the strain of pounding the pavement.

Thank you for the video! It is important to share this when 1 in 10 gets anxious when not training (I hate to be in that situation on each day). My rule was to not run in 3 consecutive days, it used to be 2 consecutive days but I already broke it with trial and error (and success this week). Taking two 4 weeks rest does help you get back in track with an injury, but I still need to see a doctor when this lockdown has finished to be in the safe side!

It's definitely something I need to be reminded of, I get too focused sometimes but relaxing with family definitely helps and they remind me they need more attention. Its crazy how some of my best qualities are some of my worst 😅

I used to have a rest day a week. But I hated it because the night before I will binge watching TV until the wee hours and feel awful the next day. Now I just run everyday. Tq for the video!

Perfect video to watch after a long run :) I take 2-3 rest days a week. Usually I use one of them to cross train and one is just a long, stressful day at work. If I take a third test day in a week I either really feel like I need to put my feet up and just go with that or I decide to get some strength & conditioning exercises in.

This was so informative and at the same time helpful! 3 months since I started to run from my couch without proper knowledge and foundations in running, I'm already running at around 12km now.. And I can say, since this is my longest run yet, I really need these tips.

Awesome advice, you should do a running after COVID video. I think that this counts as rat days! Would like to see a video on yoga for runners, I found your ‘do this after/before running’ super useful.

I think my family are grateful when I go for a run! I had been following an 80/20 plan until the start of the year which included one rest day a week in addition to at least 2 easy runs. At the start of the year I just thought that for a challenge I'd try to run every day in January. I did that and then took the 4th February as a rest day. Since then though I've got into the mind set of trying to run a minimum of 5k a day. I've only missed 3 other days (due to an injured back that I picked up whilst sowing grass seed!). I know I need rest days and would perform better if I did, but it's so close to the end of the year I will try to run every day up to and including 1/1/2021 and then go back to having regular rest days (much to my family's annoyance).

Always important to remember that Training = Work + Rest. Rest and recovery is an absolutely essential part of training and cannot be ignored. Sometimes we can get away with a short 5k recovery run at very low intensity but it depends where you are in your training. Over the last two years I've slowly built up from running 4 days a week to now running everyday and taking one rest day every two weeks. But I do nearly all of my running at low, aerobic intensity which allowed my body to handle the extra days.

It's an EXTREMELY important component of training!!! I'm never guilty of not taking them!!! It's at least as important as the training itself!! Even though I love running, I'm not addicted to it!

I am a streakrunner myself, så NOT to run is not an option. But ever since i startet running every day ( today # 173 ) i have never felt better. However i too do follow your 10th suggestion. Make sure to dramatically reduce the load/effort on rest day. It is all a matter of keep going at a considerable lower distance and pace than average. Thank you for my favourite channel.

I’m fairly new to running and I have damaged my knee badly in the past so I take my rest days, at the moment I’m running 5k or more 3 times a week varying intensity, 90% of the time I take the weekend off as recovery time unless I’ve signed up to a challenge or a run.

My rest days consist of actually do nothing, put my feet up and relax or meet up with friends. I learned the hard way by not taking rest days as I got runners knee before.

I can't stress how important it is for older runners (over 55+). you tend to be quite careful then, as any small mistake can mean days of no running

I work 7 days a week, about 55 hours total, on my feet. There is no such thing as a true 'feet up' rest day for me, but I definitely enjoy my 1-2 non-running days a week as a chance to do other things I enjoy- hiking, yoga, horse back riding, and reconnecting with the husband.

Don't do rest days but do change my training intensity. Usually do a gym workout after every run except for long run day.

I found swimming to be good cross training for running, helping especially with breathing efficiently. Yoga is great too; but I find it really challenging, as it stretches out muscles contracted by running. Not easy, but certainly worth while.

When I do run back to back days, the second day is always at a pace thats barely considered running. Its a good way to please Garmin too who's always telling me I have a Low Aerobic Shortage 😂

I run 2-3 times a week, and crosstraining 2-3 times a week. When is it best to have a rest day? Before or after the runs? I prefer the day before, but I'm not sure if that's correct.

Lol my mind always tells me on long runs to stop. Then I tell myself to shut up and get on with it because my legs say different..😂 I definitely feel guilty when I don't run. I am injured ATM with a calf strain and feel guilty not running. Seeing my friends post runs on Strava I making me want to run..😂

I think we're all a bit like that Wayne - we love running so much and feel that it will somehow hinder our performance if we take a break... but as we say in the video - rest is SO important to let our bodies recover properly. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Done 6 days of consecutive running at different distances and intensities. Average 8,5 km pr. day. Now taking two days totally off from running, doing some gardenwork... Taking a week with two or three runs at low intensity and short distance, but going to be followed by a six day runweek with no less than 12,5 km pr day.

Are you still doing between 40-70k weeks with 1-2 rest days? I am just wondering how sustainable that is. New to running and just doing my first high distance week at half that amount.

@@gm2407 Hi' Yes I'm still doing that. As I am only an amateur runner, it's important to state, that the distances vary. In general I have a short week - long week - short week - long week... Two weeks ago I had a 72K week, followed by the resent weeks 20K and this week, as I have an important half-marathon (some races are more important than others 🙂 ) where I will be running at highest possible intensity and due to my kids school are forced to have two rest days, the distance in the "long week" have to be shorter. But I will do one long run at 28K! The distance of the other runs will vary according to how my recovery is and how rested I am. My run weeks are friday - thursday and this week looks like this: Friday: 6K easy run (did a Vo2max thursday) Saturday: A very easy morning 4K, ensuring that my recovery is no more than 16 hours. Sunday. RACEDAY 21.1K Monday: resting... Tuesday: 7K easy, with just a slight bit of tempo in the middle. Wednesday: Medium strenght training (mostly rowing) followed by a relaxed 7K run with some fartlek. Thursday: 28K longrun. Increasing intensity each 7K, but very relaxed the last 2K's. Meaning I aim to hit my 10K pace from K21 to K26! Friday: resting... And then comes a "short week". I have 28 scheduled (and most are paid for) races in 2023 of witch a handfull are "Important races!". The other ones are for fun/part of my training. If you are new to running I advice against doing 70K weeks. Start with what you can handle, aiming to do five runs pr. week. If you run 3K's or 10K's each run is not that important. The consistency is important. Let the distance and intensity grow slowly !!! Experience is, that what people get injured by are increases in intensity.

@@iberiksoderblom So I set my regular runs at 3k to and from work. Other than days I need to get groceries in the evening. So between 5-10 3K runs Monday to Friday and that gets me the majority of my week. If I wasn't running them I would be walking it anyway. The weekend is where I need the rest day and one long slow run which will be 5k on Sunday. So this week will be 32k as I managed 9x3k. But I tell you I need today as my rest day as my legs need the recovery. Thinking of adding recovery walks in the evenings and on rest day to keep the legs moving and encourage circulation, just some nice easy flat routes since my work route seems to be 50/50 undulation either direction. What I like about doing the runs in the commute is that I have to get somewhere so can't not exercise. Also I don't have to do it as one whole run I could do intervals or a recovery. So happy with the flex in that. I will take your advice and keep my weeks consistent for a time as got to build that base before expanding, also not sure I want to cover more than 40k in a week just yet as I only want to be consistently fit not ultra a marathon runner. I think I have progressed well since I couldn't run 1 mile without run/walking until a month ago and now I can do 3k consistently as a solid jog 18-20 minutes. I have set myself targets of 15 minute 3ks in the next 3 months, so by June 2023. 10 minute 3ks would be my outside dream for the end of the year. Guess I will need to incorporate strides and hill sprints at some stage. Just focusing on my base at the moment and think these are reasonable goals for a late 30s guy. Oh super funny, but the work runs are done in steel toe capped boots. I am not joking the ones I have are the most comfortable shoes I have ever ran in with no friction on my feet, space in the toe and cushioning in the insoles, also brilliant for grip.

@@gm2407 I'm surprised by your footwear 🙂 If it works for you, then it's fine, and you can always change in to something more cushioned as you begin adding distance to your runs. Just stay patient in your basebuilding as you already are! I think you have shown a positive progress so far 👍

@@iberiksoderblom I need new trainers. I ran in my old pair the other week 4.4k and it took the skin off the inner arch on my right foot. Hillarious that steel toe caps have never injured my feet but running trainers have. Thanks so much for the positive feedback. I was getting worried today as I thought I would need more rest and felt slightly run down (was already ill for 11 days last month). But I think that just having a rest day and a 3.5k slow walk has sorted my body out. Only felt right today in the last hour. (Was low sodium I drunk bicarb and water amd feel much better, will have to follow that and potassium) I will do my 5k run tomorrow but I think I will lower the amount of runs next week to make sure I am fully recovered. Plus it is due to snow and I don't want to risk slipping over on concrete and hurting myself. Hate that route when it is icey.

for me, going to work is a rest day, phyiscally. And other rest days, are ment to rest mentally. I train 3-4x a week

I didn’t learn the rest recipe until I turned 40. The entire year is broken up into 5 week training blocks....regardless of racing season or off season. Every week has 2 rest days. Week 5 is always a rest week. Only easy miles, volume cut in half, 3 full race days, and 30 minutes-60 minutes of extra sleep per night. I’m running better now than when I was in my 30s, and it really makes week 4 extremely productive on hard days....it’s like the last interval....you give it all and empty the tank because a week of rest lies ahead.

I usually run three times a week - mon-wed-fri - and in between I have a heavy-weight upper body training, so I don't feel any guilt about not running. There's just a bit of a head-scratcher though: Saturday is my "leg" day so I can recover from heavy squats and deadlifts before the Monday run, but the problem is that one day for training legs is just not enough for me to effectively build muscles. So should I add some lighter training somewhere in the middle of the week like for example light-weight lunges or split-squats, or maybe reduce my runs to let's say two per week and train hard on legs that day? Some advice The Running Channel? Video on how to marry weight-lifting together with running would be very nice as well ;)

Squats and Burpees seem like something you could warm up with every day so your legs are getting something. Or at least squats if you are worried about the Burpee aerobic component would take away from your gains.

Today I run on the treadmill in 55 minutes And I full Sprint on it in 30 seconds I one strength exercise 18 Push Ups

I work as a dished washer ,on legs for 8 hours ,walking 4/6miles ,and lifting plates etc ,will the help my endurance

Yes ,I am aiming to run marathon under 4 hours when 60 (me again lol)big flat:I am 53 ,can do 12 miles. 1 hr 53? ? But get injury every 6 months 5 days 34 mins lol ,although I have made great strides ,and feel great

I used to run 8km every day..... Than made it 10km for 6 days.... Than 12km for 5.... After that 16km for 4 day a week.... Now 20km every second day... Total of 60km a week ..... And have 4 days for total rest.....
