After many years of training in and teaching the art of Tang Soo Do, I have come to a point in my life I thought would never arrive. After injuries and surgeries, my knees no longer allow me to continue training in the hard martial arts styles, which includes Tang Soo Do.
Being that I created this channel and the Warrior In You to teach the art of Tang Soo Do online, I will be changing the focus of the content going forward. I have tried to produce courses and content related to Tang Soo Do, but it is making my knees worse.
For this reason, I am hanging up my Tang Soo Do uniform for good and will be focusing on the art of Yang Tai Chi and getting as fit and healthy as I possibly can. I will still post martial arts videos, but they will be for health and document my Tai Chi and self-defense journey.

Man, this resonates. I began my TSD journey back in 1986. I was fortunate to have a school in my home town, and even more fortunate that the instructor didn't care if it was profitable or not as classes took place in the gym he and his wife owned and he was a California Highway Patrolman. He taught the Moo Duk Kwan branch, very strict. I had begun my training in a west coast based school in 1979 that was some sort of Kempo offshoot and it wasn't very useful. TSD was a big part of my life for so long, and even after moving from the area and not having consistent instruction since the early 90's I still adhered to it as my core. No matter what, I come back to it. But. There were gaps in my training due to health issues. In 1994 I had a severe back issue, and I was on disability for 2 years, during which I got depressed and fat. I made a comeback to have it happen again in 1999! I never really recovered but plugged away. I found my other passions, running, and weightlifting was just too much for me. I tried to run again in 2005 but the pain was too great. I also messed up my rotator cuff trying to lift like I did when I was younger. So I was a mess and again put on weight as I felt the loss of my physical abilities deprived me of my quality of life. I was working in the mental health field at the time, and it also took a toll on my thinking. I felt I was on the verge of meltdown and needed a change. I wound up working my first factory job at 56. Man, was I tired! But several things happened. One, I lost weight and got stronger real quick. I discovered I could use a lot of my training mindset at work, and it rejuvenated me! For a while. Perhaps it was pride, maybe I didn't give all the glory to God, but 2 years ago I developed a severe case of anemia. I went from making the young ones sweat to keep up to barely making it through the day. I have never recovered from that and feel weak and weary all the time. Sadly, my kids are grown and I now have the money to indulge my training the way I have always wanted to. I have a B.O.B, a good heavy bag, training pads, weights, and gear, all the stuff I wanted years ago but couldn't afford. I have far more bad days than good. Working on concrete all day doesn't help, either, and for the first time, I am having knee pain and some really harsh cramps and strange pains that are almost debilitating. I feel my time to pack it in is near, and at 59 I think it has come. But I still have those days, one or two a week, where it all seems to vanish for a short while. Sure, I am slow and my flexibility is a joke. But I feel the thing that has kept me with it for over 30 years- I am not sure what to call it. It is a sort of spirit you don't' get doing other things. It keeps you going, on your feet one more step! Sorry for being long-winded, but I rarely find somebody that combines so many things I can identify with. Tang Soo, God, injuries, changes in life. Bod bless! I look forward to more. Perhaps we will find a way through this valley together. I do know we will fear no evil!

We have very similar stories Claud and I relate to yours as well. I learned a very traditional form of Tang Soo Do as part of the Korean Moo Duk Kwan Association while in Korea. Never found anything like it here in the states when I returned and taught it for many years. I too was ready to pack it in, and even last night I was wondering if I should even continue to talk about martial arts because of my limitations and loss of ability now. To wake up and see your message, confirming that there are others out there like me, especially warriors of faith, confirmed that I should continue and that our martial journey in our fifties is what I should focus on. You hit the nail on the head when you said there is something that keeps you driving forward and coming back. It is one of the Tang Soo Do tenets...Indomitable Spirit. Traditional TSD training cultivates it and strengthens it, a spirit where we keep on fighting until our last breath. It keeps me coming back as well. Our Tang Soo Do may not look like it did in our twenties and thirties, but it is still Tang Soo Do, OUR Tang Soo Do, tailored to each of us and our abilities. Thanks again for your message Claud, may God bless you as we continue our Tang Soo Do journey and to be warriors in life!

God bless you and your children. Not many people continue training for that long and I live that you pass thre live of the art to your kids.

Hi Ed, I just came across your comment 1 year later! What the hell? Sorry about that, but being 3 months post surgery on my left knee replacement, I'm going for my right Nov 28th. I'm pretty sure this will end my karate training. My focus afterwards will be rebuilding and regaining my health, fitness, and mobility naturally and at home. I'm try to still do Tai chi, but that will probably be it. Hope you're doing well. 🙏

I will continue, but like you said, everything will be redone, adapted, and evolved going forward. Won't be able to refer to it as TSD I guess, just Karate, not adhering to any one style. All the best to you! 👊

Thank you and I'm rooting for you as well! I am taking it slow and working on strengthening the muscles around the knees to better support them. I also wear knee supports when training and I modify movements where I need to. If my kicks are low when they are normally high, or it becomes a knee strike instead of a kick, it is NOT wrong or not Tang Soo Do, it is MY Tang Soo Do as I practice it according to what my body can do. This is how the martial arts are supposed to be, evolving with our age over our lifetime. Most start running into difficulty as they age and just quit when all they need to do is adapt. You do not have to quit, just make necessary changes when and where you need to and you can train for life! That is my plan! Thanks again for your kind words, Tang Soo!

The mental and spiritual side of martial arts and training for overall health has a positive impact in all areas of your life. Future martial arts videos will be focused on that. Career shifts are tough, tougher after 50, but they can also be the best things that can happen. I take it you are also looking to work for yourself? Which avenue are you taking? @@kputala I currently teach at a 2 yr university in LA, that seems to value higher ed less than K12 and everyone thinks LA K12 is underfunded. A new K12 w/BA makes about the same I do with MS & 20 yrs at the same school. I teach extra classes during traditional semesters and summer for pennies on the dollar to get by. I started American Freestyle karate when I was 39 and earned my BB 2 years ago. I started a discussion with the dojo owner about summer camps, holiday mini-camps, and several other ideas that we could possibly partner on to supplement my income. He said it would not be what a college professor makes and then gasped when I told him what my overload & summer compensation was thinking I forgot a zero at the end. I have enough yrs with school to retire w/max benefits, but not old enough to pull from retirement investments (nor anywhere near enough to last until I am old enough to withdraw w/o penalty) I want to remain in academics and incorporate my Martial Arts knowledge and other skills that I rarely get to use. Looking to contract with seminars, workshops, test prep, camps, etc. Thanks for replying and best of luck on your new adventure

@@glohernand God Bless you as a teacher at any level, and I pray one day the administration realizes how poorly paid teachers are for the role they play in shaping the lives of future generations. Summer camps, mini-camps, and seminars are a great way to supplement your pay during the summer, but keep in mind that you are still trading time for money and can only hold so many events. Add to that this whole COVID mess and I think it would be hard to do now. Just a thought, and something to consider, you can create a website and create and sell courses online. Depending on how you set it up, you would do a lot of work upfront creating the courses and getting the word out, but then it would earn you money while you sleep. Same with writing a book on your style, creating t-shirts/merchandise and selling it online or at your events, etc. There are many people who would love to learn martial arts and live in remote areas nowhere near a school, cannot afford classes, or are older and/or too uncomfortable going to a school and would rather learn at home. These are the people I am trying to reach and help them receive the benefits that martial training has given me. While of course, we have a goal of making money in the process, which allows us to serve others, it is always about helping others first. It is an avenue I am researching and pursuing heavily right now. It may work for you! If I can help in any way, just contact me here or you can message me through FB or IG! Have a great weekend!

Thanks for sharing your personal story about a difficult decision, I can relate. I'm about the same age, but outgrew TSD about 20 years ago, after 15 years of practice and making it to 3rd dan. I pursued other arts from Hapkido to Tai Chi to JKD, avoided chronic injury, and became a better fighter. Even back pain went away after learning to kick less rigidily. The funny thing is, I still practice TSD forms for exercise, and still kick a lot (but without so much jumping and spinning).

Hi Bill! I am focusing more on Tai Chi, Aikido, but still do striking and some low kicks. I too still practice the forms, which are also practiced in other styles of karate, but train them with higher stances, lower kicks, and do them really slow and at normal speed. It's a journey my friend and I'm so glad to see that you are still in it as well! Us older warriors have to represent!👊😂

Found this video as an unfit 30 year old looking to get back into martial arts and trying to decide what style. I’m leaning more towards BJJ with possibly Thai or Western boxing to go with it. However I found this because in my youth I practiced tang soo do for years between the age of 7 and 15, won four gold medals in my age category (1998, 1999, 2000, 2003) so it has a special place in my heart! If I ever went back to it however it would be more for the spiritual side of it, as I really don’t think it’s a great form of self defence when it comes to a street fight.

I still practice the hyung but adjust for my knees with higher stances and lower kicks. I train for personal development, health, and love of the art, but also add techniques from other arts I have learned to develop my personal method of defending myself. Choose the art that will make you happiest. Yes, self defense is important, but if we train properly we should rarely, if ever, find ourselves having to use our skills in the street. Sorry it Tim so long to get back to you, I found a bunch of comments and never received a notification. Get back into it, and God bless you on your martial journey!

try Tai Chi I have horrible knees, torn ACL, torn meniscus, you name it. I come from a tsd background originally and even met Hwang Kee as a child because my original Korean master was one of his first students. that being said fast forward three decades later and I'm done traditional Japanese.jujutsu snd and Taijutsu where I cannot even really get into a good sitting seiza position anymore. one of my teachers does a lot of the traditional Chinese arts and I've really enjoyed doing the Tai Chi , bagua, and xing yi even though that I have bad knees I can still enjoy these arts. the trick is to find a teacher that can still teach you the combat of aspect of these as well and how to use for an actual fight. either way it goes I'm loving it and if you have bad knees don't quit martial arts all together give these arts a try they might surprise you and good luck

Hi Brian, that is exactly what I am doing. It's funny that after training in hard styles for so long you think your relaxed in Tai Chi, but you're not even close.!🤣 I'm not really interested in the combat side of it, just the health and longevity. I do still train striking, elbows, etc, and go through most of the hyung/kata adapting them where necessary. I'll never totally give up martial arts, but it has become a very personal journey for me rather than teaching publicly, etc.

I can appreciate that. I’m a 4th dan in Tang Soo Do. For knees, I had a lot of problems from back stances. Other then that things like front stances and horse stance is always helped it seems to stabilize my knees. The way I went around that was I adopted a different Tang Soo Do back stance from American Tang Soo Do. Helped incredibly. As for health in general I have had to modify my training and training in areas that only benefit longevity as I am 42 years old, I don’t do as much kicking especially high kicks, I definitely do more forms now and I often do them at a different pace. I say this just because you touched on some of it and why you’re changing what you’re doing then I realize my words are not gonna make you reconsider as you have gone with a different path but I just thought it was interesting to comment. I slowed down on kickboxing and that helped a lot too, the slower and more steady movement so forms have really helped me.

Thank you for sharing your experience Instructor Lex. Although I was planning on putting my dobok to rest due to my physical "ailments", it is such a part of me and who I am as a person, I just can't do it. I speak of being a warrior in life and warriors do not quit. That, and I don't feel I have fulfilled my goal of passing on all I have learned and my instructor's legacy. Aside from that, I have also changed my stances and movement to accommodate my knees and keep my kicks from the waist down. I will be implementing swimming and water work, performing kicks and forms in the water to improve strength and balance without the stress to my joints. Tang Soo Do is a lifestyle to those who keep with it and I believe so much in the benefits it gives, and that it has given me, that I will continue to train and study until my last breath. Again, thanks for sharing and may you continue to enjoy your training in this great art! Tang Soo!

Now for me , l'm not a good kicker myself, so for me l like Joint Locking, that was why l studied Kuk Sool Won and also it contains Hapkido, l've always favored Hapkido, because l like to also throw, also like for me Tae Kwon Do isn't my style also so l know what you mean, but l would never say rest in peace. I learned in Kung Fu, because there are so many styles, sometimes pupils usually observe for themselves to see what type of style is best and suitable for them, now for me l think something that more similar to a Kung Fu style would suite me, not everyone is the same and l've had lots of luck with Tang Soo Do the most, as for you, you should of observed to see if this style would be for you, your almost a master, where is your Perserverance, get therapy, aren' t there or you know any healing methods, l know there are, or try using certain Medicines.

Thanks Micheal, I love the art of Tang Soo Do and love kicking, but my physical ability is what it is now and I can no longer keep training in Tang Soo Do. I don't believe TSD caused my knees to deteriorate, but they do not allow me to do many of the physical activities I used to enjoy. I have been training and teaching martial arts wherever I went for my whole adult life up until now, and my focus has changed. I now train for myself and for my health, practicing the forms and techniques that work for me from all styles I learned. I train solo, except for the rare occasions I meet up with someone or train with my brother. My focus going forward is to share the non-physical benefits that Tang Soo Do and martial arts training has brought me and that is not really taught much today. The "warrior lifestyle" trying to live out the tenets and code of conduct in your life, and applying the lessons learned in training to daily life. My perseverance hasn't gone anywhere, I am still training, doing what I can, constantly seeking out ways to improve or heal my body, and on prescribed medications. My physical training is for me, my personal goals, and my journey in life, evolving as I age, persevering until the end. It has changed from hard styles like Tang Soo Do and Shotokan to the softer, more relaxed art of Tai Chi Chuan. I love that you train in Hapkido and Kuk Sool Won. I know of Kuk Sool but there are very few schools around. I also love joint locking and studied Hapkido and AIkido as well. I appreciate your words. thanks, and I wish you continued success in your training and martial journey!

Did your training injure your knees?
@kputala
@kputala 5 жыл бұрын
I can't say it did with any certainty. I had a pretty good injury on my right knee when I was younger and smacked it good in a bicycle accident. My left had surgery ti remove a piece of torn meniscus leaving it bone on bone on the outside of the knee. I say it's just an accumulation of everything. Training can do harm to your knees if you have bad form or don't use proper mechanics. Probably a good topic for the next video! Are you having any issues?

@@kputala No, I never feel joint pain anymore. I was just wondering if you were training improperly and that's why you couldn't train anymore, I really am a firm believer that if you train properly, you can do Karate/TKD/TSD your whole life but if you've been injured outside maybe it's best if you keep your training to static postures and tail chi. Good luck on your training!

@@TaoistSwordsman Thank you. I cannot pivot, kick, squat, or jump like I used to if at all, but I still do the TSD I can. I agree, training should be for life, but it will adapt as we get older.

@@jiujitsu94 I am not a physician but when the lateral meniscus is cut out and removed, the cushion between the femur and tibia is gone pretty much leaving it bone on bone as can be seen in an anatomical diagram which is also what the orthopedic surgeon advised me of. Such technicalities aren't worth discussing. Yes, I'm well aware that I am overweight and I am working on it like many others. Things that used to work no longer do and you have to find what will. Lowering weight will drastically take force off of my knees and is a main focus for me this year. It gets harder once you reach your fifties and is a constant effort. The back stances do not hurt my knees, but the pivoting and snapping of kicks. I modify my technique to suit me and this point in my life which is how martial arts should be. They should evolve with us based on our age, abilities, and limitations. Thanks for your comments.

If you have access to a 25/50 metre pool try swimming for cardio.

Hi Clarence! My community has a jr Olympic lap pool. As soon as the doc says I can submerge the knee and use the pool, I'll be in it! 👍

these types of arts are never good on your body after a while what is the point of doing these acrobatic kicks

Hi Kevin! (Great name by the way) I totally agree with you. While I was trained in a very traditional form of the art in Korea, and still did the jump and spinning kicks, we never did the acrobatic crap you see today. The tricking and the breaking demos are for show only, and I never liked that side of martial arts. While I have competed in the past, I don't like the sport Karate either, except for the kata competition. I was fortunate to always have very traditional instructors and learned in the old-school ways. I love the traditional ways of the old Karate masters from Okinawa.

TSD & TKD are both for kids & none of it is practical anyway. should've gotten out of it yrs ago if you're 58 now. but if you ask me it's time to get real about self-defense....welcome to the world of KRAV MAGA. peace out.

While self-defense is important, it's not the only reason to train in martial arts, regardless of age. Krav Maga is a great system, I wish you the best on your journey.
