I'd just went to a Spirit Halloween yesterday and this fellow was here. I pushed the pad and it jumped off of the plate it was on, the head got twisted, and the hands and feet fell off! The store manager didn't care, but she said that she'd never had that happen!

I mean... as someone who worked a season there in the past, you'd be surprised at how many people seemed to take the "put stuff where it looks like it's supposed to go" approach to building these things. I was always tinkering with them and trying to fix issues, and often times there was clearly an attempt to do _something_ but they either didn't understand the directions or just went in blind and obviously didn't quite get it. I think a lot of people talk about Nightcrawler, but the biggest mechanical nightmare was without a doubt Lil' Skelly Bones. The ones that had sudden movements tended to confuse people, and that one was even more "dramatic" than Nightcrawler. He'd crouch and cover his eyes, but when activated he would basically jump up into a standing position and lift his head. What seemed to cause so many problems was the fact that there wasn't really an electrical mechanism, but a chain attached to a spring that connected to the back of the head. The chain was lax when he was crouching, but when he jumped up it would go taunt. The spring normally prevented anything from happening, but if it was TOO taunt or parts of the animatronic weren't secured, the sudden jolt could pull the rings apart and break the chain, and if the head hadn't been properly secured it would literally fly off and tumble down his back. It was kind of hilarious turning around and groaning because his head was dangling down his back _again,_ only held in place by a few wires. I think the first one we installed was maybe chained too tightly at one point and it couldn't jump up properly, and when we fixed that his head started flying off. Someone didn't secure his head to the neck joint and a bolt was missing, so I just remember looking around and eventually just... getting creative with it. There may or may not have been a stick and some tape involved but you didn't hear it from me. Wherever it went, it would have been easy enough to fix properly if there were ever any issues. You would have thought that Lil' Skele Bones #2 would have gone together a bit smoother, but good lord... to this day I still have questions. I remember walking by and seeing that there was what looked like a white pool noodle sticking out of the side and just stopping like "that's not supposed to be like that." I crouch down and I'm opening this thing up on the floor like a surgeon and just... I still don't know who built it or how they wound up doing what they did but it was a hilariously confusing experience to say the least. I guess issue #1 was that the pool noodle was actually the padding that was supposed to go into his pants to give his legs volume. That was just... sticking out the back? I think they tried to shove it in his sleeve and it just fell out. I don't know what they _thought_ it was for but it wasn't for that. The instruction booklet? I don't know her. It was easy enough to fix, though so no biggie. Issue #2 was that while they _did_ manage to bolt the head on, for _some_ reason that still eludes me to this day, instead of using the _literal actual chain_ that came _attached_ to the animatronic and hooking it to the ring on the back of his head, they CHAINED ZIP-TIES TOGETHER AND MADE _THEIR OWN CHAIN._ It's like... okay... I'll give credit where credit is due: it did work the way it was supposed to and his head did spring up when he was activated, but _WHY?!_ His feet insoles were also missing (probably long gone at that point) so I just... made new ones... which I will neither confirm nor deny were actually two halves of a plastic water bottle. 😗 Just FYI this isn't like... standard practice. They don't tell you to do these things and I'm sure a lot of stores don't even attempt "on-the-fly" fixes like that, but having animatronics on the floor that were falling apart wasn't a good look either so I just used my best judgement. If you buy an animatronic off the floor you can probably assume it's not held together with tape and sticks... probably... maybe... To quell any concerns people might have, the animatronics themselves don't have many mechanical issues if assembled properly. The only actual mechanical issue we had was with the talking skeleton animatronic, and I can almost guarantee that it's because he was never turned off even _once_ during the entire the season; he eventually stopped talking + the bulb in one eye burned out. I think it was because we couldn't figure out how to connect him with the pressure pad so we just left him on demo mode (he wasn't a complicated or distinct animatronic) and he still hung in there a good, long while. It's safe to assume that if he'd been operating sporadically instead of 24/7 then he probably wouldn't have developed those issues. I mean, all jokes aside it really was a fun place to work. There was always something to do and there was never a dull moment, and I liked calming the kids down and talking with the people who came in. I don't think I had any customer encounters that I would consider "terrible" either. Super memorable, and I look back on it fondly. I remember I used to call Nightcrawler "the store dog" and would pat his head when I walked by. Good times.
