What Happens When You Stop Taking Thyroid Medication?

What happens to your body if you stop taking thyroid medication? For the first 3-4 weeks you probably won't notice much of a difference at all. This is because T4 thyroid hormone (the most common thyroid medication) has long half life of 7 days. This means it stays in your system for a total of about 35 days. T3 thyroid hormone, for comparison, has a half life of about 1 day so it's gone from your system in a total of 5 days.
After 4-6 weeks you will start to feel the effects and you may start to experience hypothyroid or low thyroid symptoms.
These symptoms will get worse until about week 6-8 when your thyroid gland starts to come back online. At this point your thyroid will be able to produce some thyroid hormone on its own to whatever level its capable of.

@VanOlove

@@Augusto88359 I was on Armour for about 10 years. I don’t think my doctors ever tested for TPO antibodies indicating Hashimoto’s. When I did ask for the test, their answer was ‘It’s not medically necessary as it would be treated the exactly same’. You know, doctors. I do believe drs say at least 80% of thyroid patients have hashimoto’s, so I guess they assume you do too. Anyway, I did 30 different steps due to research on PubMed clinical trials around the world. Things like Indian thyroid massage 2x daily with black seed oil. Get outside at 6am for 10min or at first light. Watch he sunset when possible, no sunglasses. This affects hormones, like thyroid. Practiced excellent sleep hygiene, same time, dark cool room, 2 pieces only of Brazil nuts daily, with seaweed sheets, for selenium and kelp, and iodine. A couple of bites of fermented foods before each meal. Either sauerkraut, kefir, or kimchi. Also, investigate the black seed oil with thyroid trials on pubmed. I bought the large bottle and eye dropped squirt 2 dropperfulls down my throat, 2x daily. Also, AMAZING for external use. I am 65 year old grandma and people ask for my skin tips. I can’t believe what a nice side effect. I use it as face and body cream. Again, look up the clinical trials for wrinkles and moisture plumping on pubmed. My job was as researcher so all that reading was easy for me. I don’t believe doctors have much time to spend on researching my needs. Also, where I live in California, a well known alternative doctor had sanctions against her MD license due to AMA board saying she wasn’t following SOC stand of care, meaning prescribing drugs often and readily enough. I am so grateful to be on zero drugs and sleeping amazing. I wish you the very best. Please do your own research. It’s a lifetime investment in youuuuuuu.

I stopped Levo for 12 weeks. Followed some good KZfaq advices healthy diets including 1 Brazilian nut each day. Mess up my TSH, used to 7.5, down to 0.7. Had TSH and cholesterol tests, TSH up to 98 and cholesterol much higher from normal. My Dr prescribed natural NP thyroid. After 4 weeks, TSH down 13, and cholesterol dropped alot nearly 200 from 284 with healthy food and exercise daily. LDL also up high and able to lower to 130. NP med better than Levo. No wonder why it is 10 times more expensive, but insurance helps to pay for. No side effects for this NP thyroid med except dry skin. Levo caused back pain end of my heart, very sharp pain for 7-8 years, cold body, high bp.. chest pain. Admitted ER 3 times. All gone after stopped taking Levo. Hope NP will help me back to normal life. Can’t get off med completely yet after 47 years on Levo and synthoid med.

I have no thyroid. I had Graves’ disease really bad so they killed off my thyroid gland with radioactive iodine. I hate being on levothyroxine ! I always feel crummy! Recently my work dropped our health insurance to some discount garbage. No doctor wants to except me as a patient. I have had no levothyroxine for 2 months. I finally was able to get one months worth of medication. I can still hardly function. I honestly feel like I’m going to die! The only hope I have right now is Jesus! My faith keeps me going.

But the reason you’re taking thyroid hormone replacement is that the thyroid isn’t functioning properly and needs supplementation with the meds. How can stopping the meds make your thyroid go back to functioning normally when it wasn’t functioning normally to begin with? I am so confused.

Some people are able to ween themselves off after making dietary changes. Like in my case, I have Hashimotos disease which means certain inflammatory foods cause my immune system to attack my thyroid tissue resulting in low thyroid. But after I started keto and kept my diet clean from heavily processed foods, I was able to ween myself off. (As well as taking the main thyroid support minerals like selenium and magnesium, and zinc.)

Well done. It's clearly obvious from the sheer number of questions here that there needs a health awareness / education push on this. I have tapered off several meds as I have NALD,along with a thyroid gland that has little to no reaction to the "same old". I have overlapping issues, n little appetite,yet gaining!!!! I have studied this, and yes, the conversion seems in small percentage ( with the meds) I think a full on clean approach in many conditions is worth a look for many. I inherited a disease, one that had no treatment option not too long ago. I am very wary thyroid meds may be progressing my main problem. Selenium,fish, A clean diet basically and zinc, plus b vitamins. Being aware n keeping a journal helps. And there are a few exceptional doctors to be found on KZfaq. Bless them. Keep well.

If your thyroid is dead, you should have your PTH checked. Your parathyroid hormone can be affected, you have 4 parathyroid on the back of your thyroid. If your thyroid is dead, your parathyroid is most likely dead. Hypoparathyroidism is treated with vitamin D3 and calcium (tums) take vitamin D3 with K2 (at least 2000ui D3 with K2 75 -100mcg) prevents calcification of your arteries. Endocrinologist is your best choice to balance out meds to the optimal level of functionality. I had a subtotal thyroidectomy, only had 1/3 of functioning thyroid. Thyroid died off and the 2 functioning parathyroid died also.

I asked to send me to endocrinologist. Endocrinologist sent the answer that I don't need to see him and that all happened because I probably was off the medication. Which I was. For about 7-8 weeks. Depends on how hyper you are. I had Graves really bad. Had to take meds until I could have RAI therapy. I would never have stopped the medication, having such a severe case.

What are the side effects if u take the euthyrox (150mg) for five years and dont have check up🥺
@LDiamondz
@LDiamondz 11 ай бұрын
@@JD-sy2xt You could become hyperactive, if the dose is now too high. Or you could be more underactive if the dose is now too low for you. You definitely don't want to be taking too much if you don't need it. It's just a blood test, you should get it checked. I say this knowing I need to get my levels checked, too! I hate going to the doctors.

Unfortunately, I was on methimazole for 6wks and suddenly I had a severe reaction to it and had to stop and had to have radiation iodine to kill off some of my thyroid. If I could have continued the methimazole, I believe I would have been fine. Try putting Iodine on your inner forearms...if the iodine color goes away within a day, your low on iodine...if it stays for a few days your ok on iodine. If you are low just keep putting the iodine on your inner forearm till it starts staying for about 3days. Low iodine can cause thyroid issues.

Why am i still losing hair? I had the best good looking hair! Everyday everybody was just talking about my hair. It was perfect. Both sides of Family has no hair issue. Than in 2017 i had diagnosed with “Hasimoto” almost a half year before i started to lose hair. So now using 5 years euthyrox 100mg. And hair problem is a thing… why is it so bad? The quality very lifeless, grey whole over my head. I’m w man 37 years btw

I don't take synthetic thyroid. I use a natural thyroid produced by pork. BIG difference ! Took a while to find the correct balance. I lost 1 of my thyroid t cancer and my endocrinologist and oncologist work together to get it right. Also D3 vitamin and B12. B12 helps your body break down and accept the best results of medication.

I take t4 and t3. I was taken off all cold turkey and I crashed. My TSH was 196 and I felt so bad. I next tried to slowly reduce them. I was able to half the dose but anymore the symptoms and TSH showed I still needed. I have symptoms again but I can’t get in to see a doctor until January. Not enough doctors in Tucson. I saw a nurse practitioner this past January and she didn’t check all labs but my TSH t4 and t3 were ok. I’m trying carnivore now because I’m feeling very fatigued. Hoping that will help. I’ve been in meds for 23 years. I have hashimotos.

Oh my …this guy is an osteopathic med doctor who no longer practices medicine? What!?! NOT an endocrinologist?- it’s an endocrinologist ya go to for specializing in this type of problem, folks…..holy cow! It’s like having a family practice doctor tell you he’s gonna do brain surgery on ya…..NOT happening…..watch out, I also don’t get advice for my hearth from a chiropractor…..geez!

Seriously!?! Thesis dangerous info. Dude…..where did you get your endocrinology specialty? Would love to know!….hashimoto’s disease is an AUTOIMMUNE problem…and NO….stopping one’s thyroid med. will NOT kick in your own thyroid working again….nor will calling this temporary…it all depends on the Cause of the thyroid problem….geez!….and how about those who have had their thyroid radiated due to having Graves’ disease? No, people, do NOT stop your meds….again…where did this guy do his internship for endocrinology?
