I'm always interested to find old menus. It's always interesting to see what people were eating "back in the day" as well as prices for different items. What sometimes is considered an expensive special item now may have been a commonplace thing back then. Venison is one thing that jumps to mind at the moment. Sort of special now, common back then. Oh well great video of course. Take it easy. *:-)*

Mark Twain in Roughing It had a great quote about the food served to passengers at Stagecoach stops. In addition to cramped space, there were accidents and an occasional robbery or attack by Indians. And then there was the food, when it was available. According to Mark Twain, a meal consisted of “last week’s bread…condemned army bacon…a beverage which pretended to be tea, but there was too much dish-rag, and sand, and old bacon-rind in it to deceive the intelligent traveler.” And to rub salt in the wound, meals were not included in the $200 a traveler paid for passage.

Santee, there was a chain of railroad restaurants at the time, the Harvey Houses, that employed young, single women and provided good food in fairly elegant surroundings. The young ladies (called "Harvey girls") were of good character and often met their future husbands among the repeat customers of the railroads. These restaurants began in Kansas in 1876 and lasted until 1968, nearly a hundred years later. There is, in fact, an operational Harvey House restaurant in the Grand Canyon Lodge of the Grand Canyon National Park in your home state. If you're ever in the area, you might want to check it out. :)

Good one Santee! Food business family here. Tough way to make a living. Many stories of so called restaurants reusing food customers left on plate. Dried everything was de rigueur.

Interesting slice of western history! Harvey Houses were one of the first chain restaurants in America. Also in the movie, Murder She Wrote's Angela Lansbury played Judy's saloon girl rival Em! The Chinese restaurants had an advantage in that much of the food was made using boiling water, which tended to get rid of pathogens that other places didn't. Also why the Chinese working on the railroads weren't sick as often as other ethnic groups working the same railroads; the Chinese boiled the local water for tea, while everyone else just drank the water as it was.

Thanks. I've done that in a few videos. Love the effect. Just needs the same angle shot from two different eras....which is hard to find at times.

@@ArizonaGhostriders hey Santee, I’m curious as to why the original picture at 1:30 doesn’t have a mountain behind it but the newer picture does. Was it because of the type of cameras back then? Thanks!

Shout out to Silverton Colorado. There is still a hotel there with rooms that was built in the 1880's and me and my family stayed there. They kept everything to make it actually look like it was from the 1880's it was really cool.

Another great episode Santee. I have in fact eating in a restaurant that was in historical old west building. I forgot the name of it but I know it was in Columbia, California. Just north of Jamestown, California.

@@ArizonaGhostriders well I think it was actually right next door but yes they were selling food out there and I did buy some food from there. The place I went to was like a bar but not really at the same time. That was for the back to 1885 event that I went to. Maybe I'll actually get a chance to eat in there again if they actually do it.

You can still get some good snake and bison in Sedona, AZ.
@ArizonaGhostriders5 жыл бұрын
Bison is not unusual to find, but snake in restaurants is not that common. I know a place in phoenix makes it.

@@ArizonaGhostriders I will get the name of the restaurant from my wife and pass it along. We've eaten there a couple of times and it has always been good. I'm n Phoenix fairly often, I would love to try it. Thanks for your great productions, you all do a fantastic job.

@@ArizonaGhostriders Hey Santee, I finally remembered to ask my wife for the name of the restaurant that serves snake, bison, etc.. It is named Cowboy Club Grille & Spirits.................. It's located in Sedona and as of today, online, they still are serving up snake and all the other goodies. The food and service have been great every time we've been there. Please let me know how y'all enjoy it when you get a chance to check it out. Keep the videos comin brother.
