hi today we did a restoration on a mamod steam roller I was told it was 1961-1965
this restoration project
On the restoration, we did soldering restoring paint machining and replacing old parts
I have never worked on steam before but it came out well steam engines are a dirty business allot of steam and mess thank god for petrol engines
I think they're all bad for the environment any way but I did some polishing on the old metal and also painting it takes allot of fuel (fire ) to make the power to operate this little steam engine it's not very efficient
I'm just starting out doing restorations and steam engines is a great part of British history as the English might as well invented the railway and steam power to be used commercially.
I hope you like this stea\m engine restoration I usually do tool restorations but this was good fun

Do NOT tighten the safety valve with pliers! That is where you are supposed to fill it with water and it should only be tightened finger tight! Also, use Esbit fuel tablets instead of coal. These where never designed to burn coal.

I cringed when you put wood and coal into the burner😳, its not made to run of that , only meths or solid fuel (esbit etc - not wood or coal!) depending on which burner you have, plus its newer than the 70s cause of the boiler sight glass.

@Tabourba not really in fact its bad for the engine and is dirty and messy, you need to use the correct fuel then they will startup quicker.

@Tabourba Its very dangerous and the fact it didn't over heat the solder is nothing sort of a miracle. These engines where only ever designed to used fuel tablets and its very dangerous to use anything else, if you had ever owned let alone used a steam engine and had seen how careful you have to be to avoid injury or even explosion you would see why the slap happy attuited if "It worked, didn't it" is a very easy way to cause serious injuries and if not worse.

I cried multiple times 1 when he screwed the safety valve up with pliers you are supposed to only screw it up finger tight otherwise it will overheat 2 when he poured water through the whistle you are supposed to fill it up from the safety valve 3 when he lit the firebox with coal and dry wood you can buy special pellets for that type of box and it will run quicker and smoother with less smoke 4 when he said it was running after half an hour I am honestly surprised it didn't explode anyway enough of my ranting good job overall with it

I Had a mamod Steamroller in the 60's so it could be original or a later model as I don't think they ever changed the design. The filling point was the Pressure Relief valve NOT the Whistle

Never use coal, never use ordinary rivets where they go in to the boiler or it will leak like a sieve, they must be blind copper rivets, it most certainly isn't from 1961 and a little research would have told you that. These models had methylated spirit burners until 1976 didn't have sight glasses until 1978. I cringed when you used cutters on those wheel hubs. They can be pried off with a little persuasion and reused. FFS, WHY DIDN'T YOU JUST BUY THE PARTS YOU NEEDED RATHER THAN BOTCHING IT ALL WITH SEALANT? YOU CAN BUY RIVET SETS FOR THESE AND REPLACEMENT SEALS.
@KitsFishing
@KitsFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry its not a 1961 model. I'd say 1975 because of the holes in the rollers and all rivet construction. Mine is full nut and bolt 1961. No sight glass.. also the water goes in safety valve filler not whistle. It sounds rough. Did u use steam oil. Still all said n done it looks great and it is a mamod

This definately NOT a 1961 engine. It's MUCH LATER thank you think! The ORIGINAL Mamod Steam Roller was called the SR1. The early SR1 Did NOT have rivets, it were a screw and bolt construction assembly. It also had entirely different wheels, an overflow water level boiler plug, instead of a sight glass, and the flywheel was held on meccano style by a single screw. The SR1 did NOT have a speed control lever next to the cylinder, nor did it have a reverse. The SR1 was also METHS FIRED, NOT solid fuel tablets. What you have here is the very much later SR1A Your engine is AT LEAST 1980's!

@@TheMadBrian2 I can't remember exactly which is which off the top of my head but if you look at things like the type of rivets used, paint colours and also the type of attachment of the roof which changed as per whether it was a te1 or a te1a things like that can all help you get a little closer to being able to have a better guess at when it was made, hope that helps.
@SimonNemeth

@@russellstafford5928 It's not a TE1 or a TE1A. It's an SR1A and a good indicator of its age is the fact that it has a sight glass instead of a water level plug. They didn't have those until 1978.

@@SimonNemeth Also it uses rivets instead of brass screws, the whistle has the folded lever, unlike the originals which had a tiny brass side lever, finally the plastic tipped lever by the piston is yet another giveaway.

You did a great job restoring it, but these engines aren't designed to run on coal or wood! It can cause them to overheat, and melt the solder. They should only be run with camp stove tablets, stereo, hand sanitizer or even cotton balls soaked in methylated spirits. They even sell butane burners, but those are quite expensive. Also, you shouldn't tighten the safety valve with pliers, as that can separate the collar nut from the boiler, like the one for the whistle. I also recommend removing the safety valve when filling the boiler, and test it once in a while, as a safety precaution. You should also oil all moving parts, and use steam oil on the piston assembly, and run it on distilled water to reduce mineral buildup. You did a great job restoring it, so give it the love and care it needs to stay in good condition. And your engine isn't from 1961, more like 80s or 90s. I would love to see your car's engine, if it's so much cleaner than a steam engine.
