Hello! Today, the restoration of the Indian dagger Katar, the type is pointed. The condition of the item is average. The dagger is not mine, a friend asked me to restore it for his museum. The subject, in my opinion, is 20-21 centuries old. Well, let's start the recovery.
This is my first experience working with Katar. The first thing I did for a long time was to remove the rust (the first layer) with a brush and put the dagger in the rust remover. After cleaning and neutralization, I dismantled the handle and got to work.
Two crossbars (handle) I ground, removed the welding residue and added rings to the steel parts to improve grip and visual interest.
It was not possible to brew with welding because after cleaning the seam, the crossbar broke off again. I used borax and copper a day for soldering.
I also re-brewed the protective parts (because one of them broke off during processing). Then I cleaned the surface via sandblaster machine. After finishing the work and welding, I decorated the sides of the Katar with metal etching and applying a shade. Due to defects at the junction of the blade and the handle, I used steel epoxy resin and steel chips. I decorated the surface.
I polished the blade slightly and began to create a scabbard. I'm made it out of linden and pine wood. Covered with natural green leather. I made the accessories for the Katar dagger out of brass.
The subject is not mine, and I did not sharpen it, but I still conducted a demonstration test for you. Don't forget to share this video. Thanks.
Sincerely, Alex. Thanks for attention!
Good luck and health to everyone! With best wishes, Alex!

I was hoping for some cabbage-killing with restored katar, but restoration is awesome. Working with makeshift tools makes it even more impressive. However your machine park might have grown over time, you still show us that it is the passion and ingenuity what counts and not spending $ on fancy tools. Your videos are both entertaining and educational at the same time.

Traditional katars blades open when you squeeze the handles. This was probably made to be a tourist souvenir. I'm happy when you get to work on different and exotic blades. ✨️🗡✨️👍

Sorry, but you are wrong. This is traditional katar. Such a weapon could have a drop-down blade, or two or three blades, and additional protection for the hand, and even pistols. Katar is known in the form of a five-pointed star (it can be seen in the film about agent 007, where the events take place in India). But it is precisely this form of katar that is traditional. Sorry for my English.

This is a Katar. they were generally wielded in pairs. As a rule they were never finely sharpened. The shape combined with the full strength and weight of the fighter would allow them to penetrate light mail with ease and the arm extensions could be used to parry bladed weapons. A martial artist armed with these would be very effective at close quarters combat.

Definitely a modern reproductive piece. From what little I know of the katar, traditionally the guard piece was a single piece of steel bent into shape by a blacksmith instead of three pieces welded together. Brazing it back together makes good sense, not quite as strong as welding but surely strong enough. I kind of expected you to drill holes for the handles to fit into before brazing them in but obviously what you did was simpler and strong enough, plus it didn’t interfere with the decoration. Speaking of that I’ve seen katars in museums that range from plainer than your friend’s to intricately engraved with inlaid precious stones. Your etching and plating is right in the middle. This was a pretty unusual object even for you but you did it justice plus gave it your special touches. I hope your friend is pleased.

Hello, yes, you are absolutely right and I agree. The guard should be made of 1 piece of metal, I would have redone everything, but I did not have such permission. Today, I returned the item to the ladle to the museum (as often happens). Thanks for the additional information.

Those arm extensions we see as potential leverage-force, are exclusively thwarts, with no further function than sword-guards. Those katar are punch-knives with arm-shields, never assume they produce extra-slash-leverage; as far as they prevent gashes to the forearm, they produce their wielder horrible arm contusions.

Though it seems old but it's not very old and not made by someone experienced. Usually the better ones have a brass casted excellent handles. But you made it better.

Yes, this is a new job for me, but it looks good for an exhibition as a sample in a museum (I took it to the museum today. Thank you!

Alex, I would be hugely interested in knowing if you have an actual source for the leather covered scabbard. All historical katar scabbards I've seen (which I admit are just around a dozen or so) are either fabric-covered wood (not leather-covered), or actually a full metal frame over the wood. Even metal frame over the fabric over the wood. I even once heard someone say (which _might_ be just BS, but I admit my ignorance here) that it was done for ritual reasons. So you got me _quite_ curious about that, because I _know_ you _do_ search documentation when restoring unusual stuff. On an unrelared matter, I would be remiss if I didn't point out a *COMPLETLY HILARIOUS* typo in the video description, so you can also laugh!. You are likely right to say that the thing was made in the late 20 or even 21 century, but "is 20-21 centuries old" means the thing is from 2000 or 2100 years ago! 😀😀😀 That would make it the oldest antique you've vorked with! 🤣🤣

Hi! Thank you for your attention and detailed description. I honestly saw it in pictures and yes, you're right. The fabric used was black, purple, red, and green. Maybe it was partly velvet - I do not know. I meant it was done at the end of the 20th century or the beginning of the 21st, i.e. our days. 1990-2020 years
