Restoration of Old Crusty Machete Covered in Rust.

Restoration of a Corneta #22 machete , made in El Salvador. Probably in the late 60s or 70s. Lots of rust and pitting in the steel. Since this machete is made from fairly thin gauge steel, I couldn't sand out the pits without making the blade too thin. Instead I glass bead blasted a matte finish on the steel and etched it with acid to give it a nice flat black metal look which hides the pitting a bit. Also I think it looks great with the new walnut and brass handle.

Corneta is a brazilian trade mark for pocket knives, knives , machetes, ecc. It exists untill today, 2020 . Really nice job. Congratulations pal.

I did 2 corn knives that were my great-grandfathers. They were also too pitted to grind out so I used Evapo-Rust to remove the rust and then cold blued the blades. I did one handle out of quarter-sawn sycamore and the other out of black walnut from a blow down in the woods behind my house. I couldn't find any tube brass for the lanyard ferrules so I cut the necks and bases off .223 cases and removed the burrs with a chamfer tool. I really enjoyed the whole process so now I'm looking for something else to restore.

Blade's too pitted to sand/polish. That's why I went with acid etch. I think I wrote that in the text.

Everyone likes different looks, but that dark etch protects from rust on high carbon Steel. It wouldn't last long if he polished the blade to be shiny.

personally i would have added 3 fullers on each side and modified the handle and added a D-guard turning it into a cutlass but pretty good restoration

Yeah but I don't want a cutlass; I'm going to use this as a machete :). I thought about fullers and a top saw, but the blade is hardened and I didn't have any way to grind those with any sort of precision, and i don't have anyway of re-heat treating something as long as a machete.

Looks really nice. Should have put at least one pin the brass guard...that epoxy will crack and fail with the kind of hits a machete deals.

I tried. That tang is HARD. Could not get a bit through it and I am not set up for annealing/tempering/re-hardening something this big, so I did what I could. Thanks for watching.

Not a lot you can do with 1.5mm thick steel that's been pitted by rust. Polished it would look like crap and you run the risk of removing material. So I went with acid etched. Not everything can be restored to it's original condition.
