Soul Iron Restoration

Жыл бұрын

In this video I'm restoring a World War 2 German bayonet which was used with Mauser K98 rifles. I found this bayonet myself on a WW2 battlefield with a metal detector. I tried to be as gentle as possible, I don't like taking too much metal off of historical pieces like this one.

love this. I have one without the frog with the old school wooden handles. The scabbard has a dent in it near the base. Any good tips for fixing that?
@soul_iron_restoration
@soul_iron_restoration Жыл бұрын
Thanks. The best way would be to make or find a metal bar that is nearly identical to the scabbard's inside shape and push that bar inside the scabbard. It would straighten the dent. You can also use a metal rod, fix it in a vice, push the other end inside the scabbard and carefully hit that dent with rubber/wooden hammer until the surface is smooth and straight and there are no signs of the dent. Either a bar or a rod have to be really smooth, otherwise it may make extra dents to the scabbard. You can also try with a wooden piece that fits the scabbard from the inside. And don't forget to remove the spring in the beginning. I hope I explained it well enough :)

Thank you and Merry Christmas to you too! The bolster is pressed using two rivets and the butt seems to be inseparable so it's made from the same piece of steel as the remaining bayonet.

You did a beautiful job on this considering the condition but one question why did you leave all that rust inside the Scab-er and only hit it loosely with the files? I would of poured rust desolver down inside let it soak get all the rust out and flush it out clean then dump cold bluing inside to protect it> I dont understand leaving all the rust inside ?

If you don't have welding gear, it might be worth your while at some point to get someone to weld a small piece of steel to the tip, so that you can reprofile a new completely sharp tip on it. That, however, goes against the possibility of the tip having been broken in a battlefield fight, which is evidence of it having been used for its intended purpose, of course.
@soul_iron_restoration
@soul_iron_restoration Жыл бұрын
I have thought of restoring the tip but decided against it. As you mentioned, the broken tip is indeed an evidence or a "battle damage". For me it makes the bayonet unique and adds some value.
@sensifarma6711
@sensifarma6711 Жыл бұрын
You shouldn’t weld tips back onto blades or knives if ruins the hardening and tempering process plus it changes the internal structure and will be prone to break again you would be much better to reshape the tip an it wouldn’t cause any more damage

Hello, yes there are Waffenamt markings. Unfortunately my camera lens doesn't focus that close up. If you look closely, I tried to show them on the back of the handle grips after I cleaned them. At about 14:42. And I found several on the butt near the button as well.

What is that green stuff used to polish the nets?
@soul_iron_restoration
@soul_iron_restoration 2 ай бұрын
That is a polishing paste. They come in different colours and different grits, just like sanding paper. From more robust to really fine. With the paste you can make the metal surface to be like a mirror. I used it to slightly refresh the look, it was a bit dull.

Is there any other procedure than argon welding to restore the broken edge of the bayonet? Fludor soldering, for example? I don't use the blade to cut.
@soul_iron_restoration
@soul_iron_restoration 2 ай бұрын
@@alenalost2822 You can definitely solder the holes and the edge and then file and sand to make the surface smooth. It's easier than welding. With welding you could get even black finish because the welds are also iron like the blade. Solder will remain white, it doesn't react with the blueing solution. You might want to keep your blade white too, then the solder won't be very visible

Hello! Can I ask what type of paint you used to paint the sleeve that won't chip off after a few months? Do you still have this bayonet? Hasn't the paint come off since then? You know, I have a Magyar FÉG 35M bayonet, the sheath of which was originally painted goosepoop-green, but mine was rusty, so I sanded off the rust and now I should paint it. I just don't know how to make it last.
@soul_iron_restoration
@soul_iron_restoration 7 ай бұрын
Hi! Yes, I still have this bayonet and the paint is completely intact. I used Hardcore brand black matt spray paint but there're lots of suitsble paints out there. If your paint comes off it's either because of wrong paint or the metal being greasy/dirty. In any case you should clean before painting and i recommend to use the primer. It's much easier for the paint to hold onto primer than the bare metal. I didn't use one because I knew the bayo would be on a shelf at home and because the putty kinda works like primer too. Anyway, the paint on the sleeve seems strong. Good luck!
