Restore It Project

5 жыл бұрын

Restoration of an old German made hand drill. I've bought this old hand held drill at a garage sale for 30 euro and, as usual, i wanted to restore it.
I really enjoy restoring old rusty object, it's something that gives me satisfaction! And as you can see i really enjoy hand held drill as I've made two videos on them, but I promise my upcoming restoration videos will be on different items!
Although i'm not a pro i really enjoy doing restoration stuff, restoring objects brings back to new life something which was, usually, extensively used in the past, which has history with it and that's quite fascinating to me! So i really hope you enjoy this restoration video and like it so i can get some more motivation, so please if you do enjoy it subscribe to the restore it project channel and give me a thumb up!
Any comment welcome and much appreciated!
This restoration video is quite long and i had to shrink every passage to the bones, for this reason I totally skipped the "testing" section at the end.. hope you don't mind and trust me that the drill works perfectly!
I’d like to improve and grow my channel by buying better equipment (camera, lights, pc, editing software, tools) so if you enjoyed the videos and feel like donating here is my paypal link paypal.me/RestoreItProject

Yeah, you're right, it's the higher gear ratio making it harder to turn. 00:43 Should all come good after the restoration. Very good. Put a nut on the crank shaft, a knurled thumb nut would be a nice touch. 👍

Hello! I'd like to thank you all for the unexpected views I got in my last videos, many positive comments and also some negative which is anyway a good thing as long as they are constructive and help me grow. If you enjoyed the video please leave a like, comment and subscribe to the channel! I'd be particularly interested in what you think about old tool like this one, are they worthless in your opinion? Or do you think it's worthwhile to restore them and keep them around? Let me know!! So thank you again and happy Holydays! Restore it Project👍

The only thing I noticed that other people did on restorations, that I did not see you do here and I don't know if they are necessary was, some people had wood on the sides of their vice, I would think so when the drill is clamped in the vice, the metal in the vice does not put additional mars on the drill, and most people wore eye protection, goggles. This was a very informative and educational video, thank you for making it. I hope you get many years use out of your restored drill. Oh and you should have cranked it when you were done to show how smoothly and easily it now worked after the restoration.

I have one of these breast drills, mighty fine drill very robust too. I use most of my old hand tools everyday as I work at my home so my tools are just cleaned and maintained to me it doesn't matter if the paint is chipped or how shiny they are but, I love watching these restoration videos to see how other people tackle there own views on restoration.

Greetings from Australia mate. Great work. Loved watching you work. You have a talent for this. A word of advice is get yourself a Dremel or rotary tool. Less aggressive on wood than a pneumatic die cutter and the range of wire brushes you can pick up from EBay is amazing. I use mine a lot for this work. I use my die cutter for metal polishing. Works a treat.

You did great! I can only think of 2 things you could add.. Maybe add a washer & a wing nut to the cranking handle to keep it in place? (I mean those threads are there for a reason right?) And like Diogo said, open up the chuck and clean it out too. Well done!
@restoreitproject5514

Yes, washer & wing nut are definitely missing and are necessary to use the brace. Chuck was actually in very good shape, also the internal parts are moving freely so i just sprayed some lubricant and kept it as it was... thanks for commenting!

An excellent job. You'll find people like to try and pick faults with the most minuscule things for the sake of it. I like the fact you just tidied up the badge, it’s original and it carries the drill's history. It would have been nice if you’d taken the chuck to pieces, it only takes a minute and you’d have known the entire machine was as new. However, I don’t think that made it a bad restoration or the job was done wrong in any way, it was just a small extra step you didn’t take. I don’t think any rust will 'spread' to any significant amount if the drill is used regularly, and it’s wiped over from time to time with Paul Sellars's 'rag-in-a-can'. There are some quite big differences between the names Americans use for tools and the names we use in the U.K. Here in the U.K. it’s called a breast drill, a brace is a totally different tool that you use with augers.

@@jhmsmarttv795 Terminology is very interesting here. It is a breast drill and it can be considered as a type of a hand drill. The brace drill is usually the U-shaped one without gears. I see sometimes that the name 'brace' is used by older craftsmen for any kind of hand crank drill. I heard that some people use "wheel brace" for the geared hand drill with a large wheel (a.k.a. eggbeater drill).

@@jhmsmarttv795 I have a Soviet clone of the drill in the video. Yes, it can be hard to operate in high-speed mode. In slow mode, it is OK if a bit is sharp. It is not suitable for spade bits though. The other manual drill I have (a clone of Stanley №803) is my favorite for drilling small holes. That open-gear design is much better than this. Very fast and reliable for many applications.
