Restoration Old Rusty SAW - Parts are RUSTED FOREVER!

Hi! Today, the restoration of an old rusty saw. I bought it at a flea market, initially I liked the old bolts, then I saw it. The condition is terrible, but well, let's start the restoration.
I've been trying to disassemble the handle for a week! But the bolts just rusted completely. I had to break the rotten handle and throw it away. The saw blade was cleaned with a rust remover, an iron brush and sandpaper.
According to the form of the old one, I made a new handle in the program and printed it on paper. I cut it out and glued it to the wood. Having carved the handle out of wood, he treated it, soaked it with oil and wax. I also changed the color with a stain.
The saw blade was corrected, the teeth were adjusted and sharpened. I used new hidden bolts for fastening. After work, I conducted a test for you as usual. Don't forget to share this video, please.

Эта пила заточена для пиления вдоль волокон, старые пилы без закалки всегда точились либо чтобы пилить вдоль, либо поперек.

Доброго времени суток, Алекс! Этой ножовке наверно не меньше лет пятидесяти, а то и шестидесяти... Надо было рукоять сразу раскалывать, не мучаться с болтами. Главное, само полотно в нормальном состоянии, особенно после чистки, заточки и разводке зубьев (каждый зуб заточить и развести... 😐) вообще отличное стало. 👍 Если честно, никогда не пилил тутовник, не думал что тутовая древесина такая плотная... Хотя ножовка и её взяла. Надеюсь, не сильно зубья затупились? Один вопрос - много уже банок с ржавчиной для истории набралось? 😉

My father had what was once a beautiful disston saw like this but in worse shape the screws all broke and there was no metal beneath the handle anymore and wood was crumbling, however I was determined to save it because it belonged to my dziadziu who was an architect and builder in the 40-60s. He died in 70 I couldn’t just throw it away even if it would be only a decoration I was okay with that prospect although I never met him and barely knew my other Dziadziu I use and work with some of their tools and in a way I carry on the trades that skipped a generation in my family, oddly in the way I inherited the tools I also inherited their skills.

Саша, отличная ножовка. Заточить бы её вдумчиво и не торопясь. И будет тебе инструмент для чистого реза. Открой мне тайну, зачем ты в течении недели пытался открутить гнилую ручку? ))) Мне, например, сразу было видно, что рукоятку ты всё равно будешь делать новую. Ну, старая деревяшка, она и в Африке старая. Винты, даже если бы ты их отвернул, так всё равно под замену. Скажу честно: ты хороший мастер, но повеселился я от души))) Кстати, с хорошим алмазным напильничком из этой пилы вообще конфетку можно сделать.

Добрый день! Вот впервые такое сделал. А рукоять я хотел сохранить, пропитать клеем\смолой, зашпаклевать, отшлифовать, пропитать и тд. тп.. Но увы болты подвели. Вот. А про алмазные напильники поищу - не слыхал доселе. Спасибо за внимание.

болты можно было маленько обстучать и засунуть целиком в соляру.Ручка из клееной доски(со временем по стыку треснет)и главное,не заточили....))) А так,хорошая работа.👍 Просто мне постоянно ножовки приносят,ручку сделать или заточить.😁 Советские,сейчас металл ножовок гуано..😵 точу закреплённой болгаркой с 1,25 диском по металлу.

@@ScrewsAndTools У поперечных зубья равнобедренным треугольником. Для ручки обычно тутник использую,мягкие породы дерева недолго служат. Или вообще 2см фанеру,но её надо обязательно пропитывать. Заточка нудное дело.Раньше вручную точил,потом плюнул и перешёл на болгарку.))С ней можно точить все ножовки и пилы по дереву,цепные тоже.Кроме самых мелкозубых.

My father was a Saw Smith. I would offer you two points to consider. Lose the WD-40; it's way over-rated for loosening stuff. The "WD" stands for "Water Displacing" and the "40" indicates the 40th attempt at success. Use an actual penetrating oil and be patient. If they are so corroded this penetrant plus heat and some hammer impact while trying to turn the screws didn't work, I would have cut them off or drilled them out as well. You may not be aware, but there are such things as "saw set pliers". How you made the set was great and my Dad taght me a similar technique, but those pliers are way faster and can be used on a variety of blade styles and tooth sizes. Correcting the set only matters if the teeth are a unifirm height. I use a knife-blade style or triangle file for sharpening. Nice job overall. Cheers from an old guy.

This was a brave restoration, but really leaves the saw more of an ornament. I have sharpened saws for more years than I care to count and have refused any that were rusty. The corrosion weakens the steel, especially the teeth which have a tendency to break off when using a setting tool. As for the debate about fast and slow sawing, the correct method is to hold the saw at approximately 40 degrees to the work surface and apply a small downward pressure as the saw is pushed through the timber. Cutting at a moderate rate allows for greater accuracy with the cut, this is a carpentry tool not a sledge hammer. In addition to the lack of accuracy when sawing like the clappers, it is exhausting plus the saw becomes very hot along the teeth, not hot enough to 'soften' the steel, but unequal heat on the whole of the blade width can cause distortion ultimately making it difficult to push through the timber. My maxim when teaching sawing of any material be it timber, metal or plastic, is slow, steady and accurate. The saw being restored is a panel saw designed for cutting sheets and boards of timber, not logs and branches, the right tool for the job saves time and energy.
