It had to happen sooner or later. I do have a rather small but treasured vinyl collection from the days when CDs were still a theoretical idea... and some my parents had when I was a theoretical idea. I have one of those cheap "same mechanism for everybody" type record players, but even I have to say that these are way too cheap for actually enjoying music. And I certainly do not consider myself an audiophile.
After watching several videos on the subject and weeding through a lot of information and pseudo-science, I came to the conclusion that I needed the following things in a record player to be happy with it:
Readily available new stylus - these things do wear out; adjustable downforce via a counterweight - not spring pressure; Direct drive - I don't think I would hear much "wow or flutter" in a belt drive, but the direct quarz controlled speed seems the better option to begin with; anti skating - while I am not 100% sure if that does much for my records, a well balanced tone arm seems a good idea.
Optional features that I like included: Fully automated start/stop. Everything beyond that is - to me - either bling or plain rip off. The one brand that always came up when I was asking people what to look for was "Technics". But after seeing those at 1000+ Euro, I had to set my goal a bit lower. Before Christmas though, I found an auction (with my usual preferred "Buy it now" option) and got this Blaupunkt XQ-240 for a mere 100 Euro. According to the seller and some other websites, it was made by Technics for Blaupunkt. So while it has Blaupunkt on the outside, it has Technics on the inside pretty much.
I set out to do my usual restoration process: taking everything mechanical apart, put new grease and oil on it, replace electrolytics and clean switch contacts on the electronics.
Overall, I am quite happy with the result! Adjusting stuff was a tad bit complicated and I had to open/close the cover several times - seven screws every time!
The LED mod didn't pan out this time. The switch uses two transistors that are switching each other on or off, but the residual current throught the LEDs is enough to make them light up... and/or mess up the control voltage for the input on the speed control chip. I might re-visit that if the bulb ever burns out or gets too hot.

Tolles Video.

(English reply just in case others are looking too) I got mine from here: elektrotanya.com/blaupunkt_xq-240_sm.pdf/download.html - the site has a "only x-downloads without registration" limit, but works fine for occasional downloads.

At 1:43 what is that dark green transparent plastic thing your assistant is holding ?
@atkelar
@atkelar 3 жыл бұрын
That's a magnetic field detector. "Magnetic field display paper" is the product name on amazon. The small version I have is affordable, it comes in various sizes and styles. Good to detect the exact way a magnet is aligned. Think of very tiny iron filings trapped inside a transparent foil. It requires a reasonable strong magnet, so it won't show a magnetized tape for example (there are versions that can do that I believe)

Face masks and social distancing are the new duck 🤣Both totally useless. Makes me think of an episode of the young ones, where Neil is hiding under a table with a white bed sheet 😆 Great episode! And your production quality is off the chain! This must take ages and ages to make an episode. You deserve so many more subscribers and views. But I guess for you, it’s like me, mere a passion project. You do it because you love it and not for ‘fame and fortune’.

Thanks for the praises! I did recently put up a "making of" video; to me, it's really my three hobbies rolled into one neat project: tinkering, video editing and puppetry. I could go for a bit more views, yes, because getting my share of the ad revenue would be appreciated. But I'm not aiming for it, or else I'd probably optimize my content more to the algorithm; I do like my format however and while I sure will tweak it here and there, it's going to be based on audience feedback not based on some AI suggesting my stuff or not.

@@atkelar I came across that BTS video. I didn’t k is you puppeteer over the recorded audio. In hindsight I was like, that makes sense of course. I saw you also use Davinci. Uptil last year I had a FX/VFX company (just me) and I moved away from expensive licensed like Maya and Nuke and went all in on Blender (which I’d used on and off, later Modo) and Fusion in Davinci for compositing. I mainly did TV shows and commercials. And two movies, a American horror/drama indie I’m Dreaming of a White Doomsday. And 2.5 seconds in the film Dunkirk.

@@atkelar No. It is a referential satire. I mean, I was watching the videos uploaded on your channel, right? And well, do you know what Furaffinity is?
@atkelar
@atkelar 2 жыл бұрын
Well, yes, I know FurAffinity; but I'm still not quite sure how you mean the reference. I guess it depends on what FurAffinity means to you 😉 - seriously though the whole subject isn't exactly "well defined" so everybody has their own idea which makes one word references a bit difficult to inerpret 😇
