I'd personally rather have a 9.0 A1 or B1 with color-touch resto (as long as there's no trimming) over a 5.5 Blue, but you didn't know the extent so it's understandable. From my experience, it's all about the level of restoration and whether it was amateur (with bleed-through from a sharpie) or professional/semi-pro (with colored wax or soluble ink). I remove restoration myself, rather than send the books off to anyone, but I've been in this hobby for 40+ years and I've learned how to do a lot of things along the way. *My criticism for CGC/CCS is based on the WAY they remove restoration.* There's not much that can be done with sharpie marks from C1 color-touch, you'll need to cut out the area that's marked, but A1 and B1 color touch can be removed with heat and very careful scraping (in the case of color wax), or light moisture and a soft cloth (in the case of soluble ink). However, rather than do that, CGC/CCS will CUT OUT ALL color-touch restoration, regardless of the type. I don't know if it's ignorance (unlikely) or a money thing (probably), but they don't want to spend the time to properly remove A1 or B1 color-touch, and I find that to be very destructive when it doesn't need to be. IMO, using an x-acto knife on customers' comics should be the LAST thing you ever want to do.

Seeing how they remove the restoration, I’m not sure if I want them to cut little pieces out of my two purple label books.

Yeah, I would think you could possibly use a small sanding bit on a Dremel tool and sand off the color touch.

Yeah I think when you start removing paper and fibers/pulp just to remove some color touch it just makes a the book look worse and creates a different problem that just doesn’t have a stigma attached to it so it makes it ok. I’ll equate it to a classic car with a dented fender that was fixed with bondo. Now because someone noticed the bondo at an event, and knowing they don’t make authentic replacement fenders anymore; you take it to a shop and have it removed. All better now; you have a car with no fender. Perfect, problem solved. When it comes down to it I’d rather have a purple label than no book at all. Some of the color touch has history attached to it done by some kid or teen decades ago for reasons other than making a profit on bumping up a book’s grade level.

Thanks Gary. I just learned to only remove light, color-touch resto from mid grade and lower books. This was a great video, very informative, and fun to watch (got me on an emotional level when I saw that 9.0 white drop to a 5.5...ouch). Love the content, keep it up!

So "restoration removal" for color touch means "cut the color touch areas off the cover" ? And the "color touch" was not even noticeable with a black light? That all sounds kind of terrible to me. I don't really like slabbed books in general but can kind of see why people prefer a blue label. At the same time if it means cutting parts of the cover off to get, I think I'd be okay with slight color touch...

Great informative video right down to use of the black light. I did not know that restoration removal involved that much paper removal. That scares me. I think I'd rather have the color touching which IMPROVES the look of the book than the removal of pieces which DETRACT from the look of the book, purple label or no purple label. But maybe that's just me.

Still going through the restoration to get a blue label is a great call. Once X-Men come to the MCU, you would have wanted to have the lower grade but blue label. Incredible patience and great video. If nothing else, it fosters a sense of trust knowing they are presented as unaltered.

When they remove the restoration it can really hurt. Generally the higher the grade the more restoration impacts the price. So a 9.0 restored usually is worth 10-20% of a blue label.

Really interesting video. Great job. I'm thinking that restoration for color touch on high grade books in general is going to be a much bigger hit on the grade then restoration on lower grade books. Simply because at lower grades, more defects fit the grade whereas you can't cut pieces out of a cover on a 9.0 and get anywhere near that grade. Cover pieces missing are going to get you at best 7.0 and likely something even lower depending on how much they cut.

Great video Gary , thank you. It has always amazed me that ink and date stamps from newsstands back in the day, when they completely mar a cover are ok with everyone, but a slight ink mark that IMPROVES eye appeal is not. If grading companies were not in our hobby, which would all of us prefer? 😀….thanks again!

might have been said before but I think books like xmen 94, marvel spotlight 5 etc are notorious for color touch. that dark cover! also it makes sense that since 94 was high grade 9.0 there was a better change of it taking a big hit vs daredevil at 2.0. the Daredevil was totally worth it!

First. Great video. I will say, the idea of restoration removal and the purple label is a little flawed in some sense when they have to damage the book more to remove it. I get it for some restoration work, but I am not a fan of the fact they have to cut pieces out just to remove color touch. That should just be a blue label and knocked down points and noted on the label. How much do you feel you lost in general by making this submission? You said you spent $600 out for the restoration removal and resubmission. Maybe broke even in the end with being lucky on the Daredevil 1 staying the same grade.

Hey Gary this is Bob an Ridgefield Connecticut yes I was talking to you at the New York City comic con and Mohegan sun. I have three restored books. I have a superman 1 5.0 restored no trimming I was told with no trimming you can always make it into a blue label. But to re-grade would cost me a fortune. I also have a Batman 1 5.0 restored but that has trimming. I have an amazing fantasy 15 8.0 restored no trimming but I spoke to CGC if I ever want to re-grade these books it cost too much money well I hope everything is great with you I know you are a very busy man.🥳🥳🥳

Great video. Restoration removal is something I've been interested in for awhile. And I've been curious as to what CCS's process is. I didn't know they actually cut the color touch out. In fact, I had a copy of X-men 94 myself that had those little cuts on the spine. I could never quite figure out what did it. Now I know it had color touch removed from it at some point. Mystery solved.

You did touch on this in the first part of the video - but when you went over the values at the end you do have to factor in your costs for the restoration to have a fairer comparison. Need to show the fuller business case with all grading costs and expenses against expected selling price if you try the restoration option. I realize your acquisition cost of a book in general you may not always want to reveal or you may not have one if it was obtained as part of a collection. So I know that piece won't be included.

Interesting video. I've often wondered what was involved in the restoration removal process. i never would have imagined that they would just cut it off!!! I have a Marvel Family #1 graded at a 0.5 blue label because of some glue on the spine. It technically should have had a purple label because the restoration is mentioned on the blue label. Probably would have been graded higher with the purple label. So, in this instance, should I just let it be since it's a blue label or take the chance in having the restoration removed? I can't really see it coming back lower than a 0.5.

Great video. Generally if you have a 1.0-4.0 range book with restoration that is a high value book, it’s worth it to submit for removal because the drop won’t hurt as much. When you have 8.0+ graded books restored, you run the risk of them scraping off ink along edges and spines and getting a mid grade which sure might be an easier move but people can see the removal and for some, that looks ugly. You are better of saving and waiting to move the restored copy.
