Hello. In this video I restored Old Rusty froe.

A free is used to split wood. Commonly used to make roof shakes.

Also they were not typically sharp like a knife or axe but slightly blunt-edged to aid the splitting process. Hence the old folks saying "Dull as a froe."

It looks great and you did a great job I really appreciate your talent and ingenuity! I find it more expensive to restore electricity than to buy a new one. Just like I ordered scrap to sell to them, I went to the market to buy 10 new axes to use quickly

That would be a froe. It is used to split wood typically would not have a permanent handle

Typically used to split roof shakes (AKA wooden shingles). I have watched my great-grandfather do this exact job.

I can't understand why you bothered with rust removal by electrolysis when you were going to re-forge the blade. It was a complete waste of time. Nice job though

My guess is he did not see all the imperfections until the rust was removed and realized he would need to reshape it. It’s hard to tell with a lot of rust but I could be wrong

Also, removing rust does help with forging.

@@fredfry5100 The rust falls off with the forge scale when you strike. There is no need to remove rust from steel when you are forging. You only need to clean the steel when forge welding.

A froe doesn’t come to a point like that, it is straight. Either someone ground it out of shape or it was used for something else like cracking bones.
