About this axe.
This ax was found in the forest many years ago. Then he lay under my feet for many years in my workshop. And quite recently, I took it in my hands and examined it more closely ... It turned out to be not an ordinary ax.
RECOVERY PROCESS.
The first thing I did was brush it with a soft brass brush, hoping to find some factory marks.
Not finding a stamp, I took the grinder and aligned the top and bottom edges.
After that, I found two cracks on it (in fact, they were not cracks). As it turned out already in the process of restoration, the ax was made of DAMASS STEEL!
I am VERY happy with this recovery video and I VERY HOPE you will like it too!
By the way, the channel has already released a new COOL video with the restoration of the WEHRMAHT TANK KEY • THE RESTORATION WRENCH... 👍👍👍

I think he destroyed the authenticity by grinding out the hammer marks, and unevenness. A man built that axe, with hand tools, and it's imperfections were beautiful.

Seemed more like an unfinished piece due to how uneven the blade head was. Bearded axes/hatchets like this were used mainly for camp work like shaving down wood, chopping things up and more intricate work as far as my knowledge goes so an uneven axe would not be the best for working with. He kept the casting marks for the most part at least which is still neat. I think he did a good job and cleaning it up and improving upon what the creator had done. :)

I really hope a museum looked at this before it was restored. If it was an archeological find, restoring it would be tragic!

My thought also. I hope this wasn’t a genuine ancient artifact that was ground down and bathed in acid. Even if it was only 19th Century I wouldn’t have liked seeing that done.

I cried when I saw that you intended to straighten out the irregularities. Being forged by hand,there would have been irregularities because until the 1930's,things like disc grinders didn't exist. but,if you want it to look like it was made in 2022 ,go ahead.

It's a wrought iron core, which explains the striations. The core would have been forge welded to a higher carbon blade. The crack was created by someone hammering it, using it as a wedge, very common in any old and misused axe head.

Interesting comments all regarding this axe. I have several axes that date to this period. The bearded axes with round side edges where the axe is hafted is typical of axes used in Eastern Europe from about the tenth century to the twelfth century of our current era. Many of this type of axe have been recovered from Bulgaria in medieval sites from local metal detection. These axes were manufactured by hand forging from the middle Byzantium empire. About a decade ago many were sold on Ebay and were fairly common at that time as many were being recovered at the period. Research on the origin of the bearded axe started in western Europe in the fifth century and is well documented in research papers from the British Museum. They are loosely connected with the Francisca throwing axes first recognized in Gual and used by Goths, Saxons and Frank's and thrown against late Roman armies and other tribes in battle. The bearded axes from the Vikings period are some what different in style and usually have engraving in ruinic style symbols. Interesting restoration.

The edges were meant to be uneven. This makes an axe swing behave like a splitting wedge and give further strength to the felling swing, and also gives it use as a hewing axe. The Viking bearded axe designs were well beyond their times its no wonder at all the design would have migrated to the east.

Hi Their, I just came across the channel and you probably have already been told that the black residue on the metal is Black Iron Oxide which is the result of the acid turning the red Iron Oxide black as you cleaned it. Also it is a hand forged axe as the lamination you see in the metal is where one piece of iron was heated and hammered out and folded over on itself then re heated and folded ect, so what you see is all the times the blacksmith folded it over and welded itself to itself to make one block of iron. A really nice piece of history, well done you. Regards Richard 🇬🇧

Видно по всему, топор был выкован из нескольких кусков металла, но плохо был проварен, либо недостаточна температура ковки, либо недостаток флюса, т.к. такие изъяны не могли произойти при литье. Продольная трещина тому объяснение.

I am a retired blacksmith. Your ax was forged not cast. The lines you found are where the metal was forge welded. The edge would be steel and the main body wrought iron. My guess is that it is probably an early 29th century item. Looks to be a Northern European style hewing ax. Nice piece.

I'm working on one very similar to it... maybe a little heavier than yours, but close. It came from Bulgaria. It's not a felling axe, and yet it's too heavy for being one-handed like a hatchet, that is unless it's held behind the bearded blade, or used (swung) in the down (or upside-down) position for the purpose of debarking or otherwise shaping raw timber. ... Regardless, bearded axes are beautiful and you have a nice one there. Nice job.

I was surprised you didn't cut the wedge slot front to back as usual? That way when the wede was hammered in it would have filled the empty spaces! Anyway I would CERTAINLY contact someone about the age and provenance of the axe head, It could be a museum piece???
@ITBR_Restoration
@ITBR_Restoration 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think a wedge would help in filling the empty space. Most likely, the handle would simply burst due to the large size of the wedge. Thank you for your comment.🙏
