Today I want to go over some interesting new research on restoring sense of smell. Some interesting data states that insulin is needed to repair olfactory neurons. The olfactory neurons have to do with your receptors for smell, and if damaged, this can affect your ability to taste. If you can’t smell, you can’t taste too well.
Another interesting thing is that the highest density and the highest concentration of insulin receptors in the brain are in the olfactory regions. Insulin has a huge role in the recovery of neurons after an injury. If there is not enough insulin available, you could have a hard time recovering from any type of injury to these neurons.
This is why a prediabetic or diabetic may have more of a loss of smell after damaging those neurons than someone who doesn’t have a problem with insulin. Even people with insulin resistance may have this problem.
Insulin resistance is very common. With insulin resistance, this means you could have an insulin deficiency in certain parts of the body, as well as excess insulin. As far as the neurons in the olfactory area in your sinuses, you could be very deficient in insulin if you have insulin resistance.
It turns out that the use of intranasal spray (spraying insulin into the sinuses) caused an immediate improvement in the sense of smell and smell differentiation.
There are many different things you can do for a loss of smell. But, restoring insulin resistance, so you have enough insulin to help repair these neurons may be the most important thing to do.
How to restore insulin resistance:
• Go on a low-carb diet
• Do intermittent fasting (at least 18 hours a day)
• Take apple cider vinegar before bed (2 tbsp. in water)
• Regular exercise
• Take vitamin D (at least 10,000 IUs per day)
• Get potassium (from a supplement or from food)
• Get vitamin B1

Since ditching sugar and carbs 5 weeks ago my body's inflammation has declined so much, I can suddenly breathe through both sides of my nose. This is after going through a septoplasty and two turbinate reduction surgeries about 10 years ago that only improved my breathing briefly. I'm amazed.

I roll around on a tennis ball every day for hours, trying to 'pop' the gas. It's always at the same spot. I can trigger a gurgling and popping from putting the tennis ball near the left kidney, sometimes under the left shoulder blade. What is that? And what is causing it? Do you need a prescription to get insulin spray? I recovered my sense of taste and smell after Covid bout in February, although my favorite smell, coffee, is still distorted sadly… just smells like poop. Interestingly, after someone accidentally blew cigarette smoke in my face two weeks ago, I smell smoke all the time now. Very disconcerting!!!!!

My sense of smell decreased over 15 years ago. I knew I had a viral sinus infection but my sinuses seemed extremely dry but inflamed. After that I lost about 50% of my sense of smell. It's amazing how much I miss the depth of smell, like the leaves in the fall. I can only smell them slightly. The loss of smell is specific to certain things, other smells are fine like citrus. I'm a clinical educator and was still doing patient care 15 years ago. I could smell urine but not bowel movements. Doesn't seem like a bad thing to lose but in healthcare it all matters. I talked to another woman with the same exact problem and she told me she couldn't tell when her grandchildren's diapers needed to be changed.

After brain surgery in November 2020, where they removed one brain tumour, I'm likely to have very little smell for the rest of my life. He told me he had to lift one of the nerves a little bit during the surgery and that probably damage that nerve with scars following. I still think that the other one is intact but I still can't smell things very much. Or taste. That really sucks. But now when I've started on Keto I will also start taking zink. Hmm... I wonder if I can spray some Colloidal zinc directly in to the nose 🤔

Now i have my own zinc test which I go to my room that had a fire before, if I don't smell a thing, I know it's time to get some zinc ! I lost my sense of taste and smell many years ago. I'm adhering to a very strict OMAD/Keto/IF diet as Dr. Berg instructs. I often skip 1-2 days of eating due to lack of hunger. I do at least one 3 day fast every month. I may try the things that are suggested in this video. I'm guessing that the insulin nasal spray requires a prescription, so I'll definitely take a pass on that one. Not being able to taste or smell limits any craving, which is a win in my book! Thanks, Doc!

Dr Berg - I am recovering from CoVid but am plagued with phantom smells. It is odd because what I smell inside completely changes when outside or even from ground floor to basement. Basement is closest to normal, other 2 are total olfactory hallucinations. My question is, would insulin spray also help with this? Also notable my taste buds are totally giving odd signals and making things taste awful. I have been in a fasted state the last 4 days since my symptoms started but taking electrolytes, D, C, Quercetin and zinc… nothing is helping this infuriating symptom. Any help would be so appreciated!

My problem isn’t being able to smell. My problem is I just smell smoke or burnt toast/rubber all day long in my house. Nobody else can smell it. But something about the house triggers it. It smells so strong like someone is cooking. But when I go outside the smell goes away. It makes no sense. Maybe someone can help explain this to me.
