Original clip was upscaled to 1080p, converted to 60fps and a great deal of cleaning was digitally done, removing the majority of dust and scratches, as well as tidying up the original edits, some of which were marred with splicing glue.
The Golden Hawks were a Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) aerobatic flying team established in 1959 to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the RCAF and the "Golden" 50th anniversary of Canadian flight, which began with the AEA Silver Dart in 1909.
Initially, a six-plane team was envisioned as performing for only one year with the Canadair Sabre 5. The Golden Hawks originally had eight pilots led by Squadron Leader Fern Villeneuve, but the Golden Hawks were so popular after their 1959 show season that the team was re-established for 1960. The team, under the command of W/C Jack Allan, and the lead of S/L Villeneuve, included pilots: F/L James McCombe, F/L Edward Rozdeba, F/L Jeb Kerr, F/L Ralph Annis, F/L Sam Eisler, F/O Jim Holt and F/O William (Bill) Stewart.
In 1961, F/L McCombe became the leader of the team, as Villeneuve left the team when he married. Two deaths altered the makeup of the team: F/O John T. Price joined the Hawks in 1959 after F/O Eisler died, and served as second solo. When F/L Kerr died in a crash in Calgary, F/O John T. Price moved to lead solo.
F/O Stewart's routine as lead solo was often the one most remembered since his low-level aerobatics looked to the crowd to be particularly dangerous. The Golden Hawks continued performing for three more seasons until they were disbanded, ostensibly for financial reasons, on February 7, 1964, having flown a total of 317 shows across North America.
Not only did the team perform standard loops and rolls in very tight formation, they also introduced their own trademark maneuvers. The Golden Hawks pioneered a two-aircraft head-on coordinated solo program which virtually every military team since has adopted in various ways. They also invented the Card 5 Maneuver, where five aircraft fly in a card formation, two up front, one in the middle, two in the back. They also created the Coordinated Two Aircraft 360, where two aircraft fly in opposite directions at low level at about 350 miles an hour, at about seven gravities, in a horizontal circle and pass each other on both sides of the circle.
The legacy of the Golden Hawks lives on with the Canadian Forces Snowbirds.

Such wonderful memories. CB Lang was my mentor when l was posted to my first F-86 Squadron in Baden-Söllingen, Germany. He took me on a pub crawl in Baden-Baden when l first arrived and of course we flew together many times as l learned the tactics of a fighter Squadron. CB left my Squadron to become the leader of the Golden Hawks in the early '60s. One morning in 1984 l heard on my car radio the my friend CB Lang had died of cancer. So sad. He was truly a wonderful guy.

That's pretty cool! My uncle flew slot position with the Golden Centennaires which were Canada's 1967 flight demo team. I saw them perform when I was just 6yo and I remember it like it was yesterday!

Thank you for posting. I watched the Golden Hawks perform many times in the air show at Exhibition Place in Toronto. This included the practice sessions along the lakeshore. They were certainly better than the dinosaur Snow Birds we have today.

After Major Lloyd Hubbard retired from the RCAF in the mid sixties he joined Pratt & Whitney as a corporate pilot. I had the privilege of flying with him on Pratt & Whitney's CF100, testing JT15D turbofan engines. That aircraft--SN 760 is now being restored at St Hubert airport near Montreal.

That’s cool, thanks. I saw the Golden Hawks when I was a little kid. Somewhere in the family archives is a photo of me standing in front of one of the aircraft. I’ve always loved the Sabre. Such a beautiful jet.

Amazing restoration, looks and sounds great! Thank you for posting this. I'm working on a Golden Hawks project right now, which led me here, a nice surprise. My dad would have just been honourably discharged from 408 Squadron here at Rockcliffe. This was Air Force Day June 1962, 2 years before I was born.

They did shows for us in Trenton and got to climb into one when they were displayed first at Air Shows there and when they practiced prior. . I lived on base in house 30 Sourh Station 1959 to 63. The hangers were behind us fenced in across the road lol

Excellent restoration. They were a great team and it was nice to see footage of them flying. Looks like it was a good airshow, even a couple of quick views of their painted T33.
