The 1965 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 was offered in a single exterior paint option - Wimbledon White with optional blue LeMans stripes in Guardsman Blue that ran down the center of the body and with a functional hood scoop, the fiberglass hood of the car made it something of an icon on the road. In 1965 Ford had been spurned by the SCCA, the sanctioning body for amateur sports car racing in this country. The severely independent SCCA seemingly did not appreciate being muscled by a large corporation, so Ford turned to Carroll Shelby. The SCCA said in order for Carroll's cars to be sanctioned, there needed to be 100 of them.
The brand new 1965 GT350 was powered by a Ford 289-cubic inch V-8, but with some Kobra Kustom accessories bolted on. Shelby starts with the 271-hp “k” code “High-Performance” version of the 289 V-8 and adds a high-riser intake manifold, welded-tube headers and cast-aluminum valve-rocker covers which raises peak power to 306hp. Also, the pressed-steel stock oil sump is replaced with a large cast-aluminum sump, complete with cooling fins. It also featured a four-speed manual transmission and side-exhaust pipes fitted with two-inch Glasspak mufflers. A 9-inch differential fitted with 3.89 rear gears transferred the grunt of the 289 to the pavement. Most notably, the 1965 GT350 had no rear seat because SCCA B Production requirements only permitted two-seater cars. In its place was a fiberglass floor, with a spare tire mounted beneath the rear glass.
According to the Shelby American factory records, this chassis was received at the Shelby American Los Angeles CA. facility on June 10th, 1965. Work started on June 14th, 1965 and it was finished on August 20th, 1965. It was then shipped to Young Motor Co. in Charlotte, North Carolina and they were invoiced for $3,547. This special Shelby Mustang was delivered new with highly desirable optional Cragar Shelby wheels and Blue LeMans stripes.
The expert team here at LMC completely restored this example to concourse specifications for previous ownership. Unlike many others, this example’s body was in exceptional shape prior to starting the restoration. The body was taken down to bare metal, primed, block sanded until desired finish. Several coats of base and clear were applied and some texture was left in the paint replicating how it originally came from the factory. The interior was refinished with its correct dash mounted pod with 8,000 rpm tach and oil pressure, factory racing lap belts, 15" wood rimmed steering wheel and factory radio delete plate. Under the hood, the engine compartment was completely and fully detailed highlighting a numbers matching Hi-Po 289/306hp engine backed by the prerequisite aluminum case T-10 4-speed transmission and bulletproof Ford 9 inch rear end with Detroit locker. On a hoist you will discover the undercarriage to be in absolutely outstanding condition with floors finished in the correct factory style red oxide primer with body color overspray and blacked out pinch welds. The overall look and unmistakable sound of the car comes from the factory side exiting exhaust just in front of the correct Blue Dot tires mounted on the optional Cragar wheels.

I was fortunate enough to have owned a 1965 Shelby GT 350. While i totally enjoyed the car I found that it was so powerful that you had to be careful not to get yourself in trouble.

Hi there I'm a 37 model male human , Irish edition . I was of the age when Mr. Shelby was putting the Cobra through it paces . I was amazed at the performance , look & sound I have been a fan all my life as a result . This video is also amazing in content I have been riveted to the iPad . There is just so much tecnology to absorb from body frame engine , steering , suspension & engine . I'm awed. By it all . From this standpoint today I got a look into how this fabulous cars history . Thank you again , you made my day . You can't stop me dreaming either I'll probably kick my wife out of the bed tonight while I relive my day watching your wonderful produced video .

She's a beauty, Shelby Mustang's and Mustang's in general all generations, are very desirable for collecting or turning a buck or two, and if you know what you are doing, you can make a living off of them, finding, flipping, restoring, trading, I've done it for years, and I love every about them. it's total Americana.....🤠

Greetings from Colorado, boys! Hail fellows. Well met! What a story. I found you guys in late spring 2023 as I was preparing mentally and chasing the internet through the new Endurance season, what Le Mans' 100th might mean and how the gods were making crazy sounds around WHAT? FerRARI? Anyway. Le Mans, with the Klutt boys who were participating in a new-fangled, first ever soon-to-be-anniversary of beating the heck out of old LeMans cars was cool. But I thought you guys were just ....what...super rich collectors trying to be the Canadian Jay Leno's Garage? I profoundly apologize and offer large compliments for a coupla things. Like what a great family Peter and his two sons who're his business partners and help Peter prove the adage, "Find something to do for work that you absolutely love and you'll never work a day in your life." I could wax prolifically about how I 'get' all the cool things that make Legendary what it is today. But at age 69.5 and having watched Gary and Peter talking about their shared huge passion for cars while actually documenting the incredible FUN the have together today as well as just what Gary and Tom got up to in late/early '00 century area just playing with what the HECK they could do with by putting CARS on this INtranet machine. And talking about cars, building cars and racing cars...And then talking about cars some more-MILLER TIME! Thank you boys. From the bottom of my heart, I offer my profound wish for fair winds and following seas for your friends and families.

Great looking car and a terrific explanation of all that was done!! I'm very curious about labor costs back in your neck of the woods? Parts cost depend if you're looking for reproduction or NOS but they are fairly easily calculated.

What if someone then buys this car and wants it 100% factory original, do you recommend the customer keep the original parts (heads intake etc) .. what would that process be to return it to original if the original parts weren't retained?

I have had one of these for over 40 years. ALL you have to do is get a set of 225 50 15 inch tires and you lower it by 2 inches by getting rid of the Camry tires. You get much better off the line traction

Is the 289 still oversquare at 347 cubic inch? If you stroked it, it might be less racy (by nature) in the RPM department. Don't know if I'm crazy about it, as such.

@@radioguy1620 ; Maybe they bored it to 302, then stroked it to 347. To get it to 347 must be from some standard crank readily available, so probably more than one company. Just guessing here.

Very nicely done, major bummer on all the brake modifications. The Kelsey Hayes proportioning valves can be sleeved and rebuilt. The dual master doesn't look right under the hood and the rear 10x2.5 brakes are an important Shelby only component. All can be reversed easily though. And I do understand, the customer gets what he wants.

Most early Shelby’s are not concourse practical. Mine was raced for nine years with three years on scca tracks and had several engines in it. They were raced for a business. It took me years to return the car to stock street model let alone even consider going concourse. I drive the car every chance I get and putting concourse on it would make it a trailer queen. I have watched the judges at the Shelby conventions literally destroy a beautiful persons car with markdowns and comments, I guess if you want to do the concourse class you have to expect that. I am happy with mine in showroom condition

They said about 1,000 hours, but that must be from professionals that do this for a living. Definitely a few years for the average weekend warrior on a budget

Well done but these cars did not have stripes from Shelby. The cars were white when delivered, the dealers painted the stripes if the buyer wanted them. The stripes themselves did not continue under the windscreen/ back glass rubber, they were also painted over the white, opposite of how it was done here.

I noticed that this car doesn't have glass on the rear sail panel was this just for race versions also the side scoops have no air ducts is this race only

Not a fan of rear disc set up on these early cars. The E brakes don't work correctly. Would have done the 11x 2-1/4 inch rear drum set up. Looks more original and works great. JMO. Other wise great job.

If 347 is the way to go, why didn't engineers at Ford take that ball and run with it, to begin with? Why, all of a sudden, do you know more than the engineers at Ford?

The engineers at Ford actually did do that. The 302 (which replaced the 289) is just a stroked 302. As for Shelby American, the builders from the original crew have built some continuation GT351C cars, under the name OVC (Original Venice Crew). The power-plant they ran with? 289 HiPo stroked to 347 ci.

Guy, your “concours restoration” is far from it…let me judge that car and be amazed all the point deductions you’ll get. I like the remark on the 4 rivets for the ball joints, wanting it to look original, hahaha…you’re building a resto mod type not a concours. Nice car, very nice but stop saying concours. Poor Bill, he’s got the GT500 but you onscreen text it as a GT350.

To start with looks like another classic well hidden schrunched shell out of the box...$$$$$ and for all THAT extreme effort...vs overall improvement$$$$...ahhh I'll pass. Nice project but a restomod and very costly as such cars are now left for high dollar gods of pebble creek...er beach...
