Dearbhla and her mother Mona have brought in a treasured miniature of a traditional Irish dancing dress. This dress showcases a timeless lace collar and cuffs, initially made for Mona during her childhood dance training in the 1950s. Handed down through generations, the dress has also been worn by Dearbhla and her own children. After years of use, the delicate 70-year-old lace is deteriorating and unravelling. Textile conservator Rebecca Bissonnet faces the intricate challenge of restoring both the lace and the dress to their original beauty.

I would be tempted to have duplicates made for use on any dress used for competition. Thus sparing these originals the rigors. Then use the originals for special occasions.

Repairing vintage crocheted lace can be maddening! I learned how to crochet to be able to fix my husband's great-grandmother's crocheted lace tablecloth. It took a few years and a lot of thread crochet work to feel up to the job. It's repaired now, but my husband is afraid to bring it out to be used. 😆

Bless you for learning and repairing that tablecloth 👏. My grandmother did lace crochet and I've never had the courage to attempt it ❤

@@jt.s.7418 Just go for it! Remember, it's only crochet. If you mess up, you can easily frog it and reuse the thread. 😀

That reminds me of when i had to repair netting stocking for the las Vegas show girls. Its a particular stitch that if done correctly you can't see the repair. As far as the actual crochet, my mom made me a queen size bed spread out of a fine cotton thread. When she would sew she would be watching a movie at the same time and every now and then look down. She was amazing. I miss her.

But she left you with such fond memories. They were from such a talented generation, so unlike today’s “THROWAWAY” generation. :-)

My mother was just as meticulous with her vintage doilies. Good job!

That's Irish crochet. My grandmother used to do that and she had some lovely doilies and one tablecloth that was exquisite. She taught me to crochet but my eyesight isn't good enough for fine work.

Speaking as a professional dancer that knows how to make lace, I can vouch, repairing vintage Irish lace is much harder than dancing or making the lace.

Is it crochet or bobbin lace? I know she said crochet...
