You've ruined me, Tom. I've tried watching other restoration channels, but yours tops them in my book. You have figured out that delicate balance between what to show and what to skip, plus you have just the right amount of talking. Great camera work and editing, too.

I too learn a lot. I have learned that there is almost nothing Tom cannot repair and without all the fancy tools other,s seem to need. Indeed I begin to think that restoration calls for far more skill than the original craftsmen possessed.

Early on in my antique furniture restoration, I repaired 2 chairs that were from Italy and made in 1670ish by a famous furniture maker of the period. Each chair was worth $1 million each around 1996. I was terrified to work on them as they were worth so much. My boss was an old hippie and said to me "what is it that we do?". I said "fix furniture". He said "if we fuck anything up then we can fix it". It actually made me feel much more at ease and I never really stressed working on a lot of very expensive furniture. I now have furniture in magazines, famous houses, and museums.

@@johnsonrestoration I grew up in the "Antique Capital" of CT, Woodbury. We did a lot of business in Greenwich and NYC. So there were a lot of expensive pieces that came through, he did a lot of work for insurance companies. But him saying that has stuck with me all these years later. He was a pretty cool guy. Keep up with the great videos.

@@R_Forde I still was to some extent. Soon after we did a chair once owned by King Henry the 8th if I remember correctly and was valued at $400k. It was so bizarre to sit in that chair afterwards and think about all the powerful people that sat there prior and then little old me.

Great video. I recently repaired a set of chairs with rush seats for a close friend. The rush was falling apart and the joints were loose. I checked a few furniture repair places by me to see what the cost of replacing the rush would be. It was much more expensive than my friend could afford. I found a channel on you tube that gave detailed instructions on rush replacement. Replacement rush was available on Amazon. I cut the rush off the chairs and repaired the chairs with the instructions provided on your channel. Then I strung new rush on each chair. It took a little time, but turned out great. Another source recommended coating the rush with Shellac to water proof it. I understand that replacement of old vegetation based rush with the new paper based material will damage it's sale value. These chairs seats were last replaced by my friends mother. He approved the repair. Your videos continue to inspire and embolden watchers like myself to make repairs and give furniture new life.

Mr Johnson, I too have refinished furniture for many years as a hobby. My father in law was an excellent teacher and taught me I would say everything he knew. He did have a feeling about restoring old chairs though, if it wasn't great, great, great granny's broken chair and wasn't a true treasure then about the best outcome of its existence would be a rewarding trip to the wood stove ! So much time invested, so little satisfaction of the repair.....I'm just saying. Haha, ps Thanks for the advice of decompression of the spine. Long road and alot of experimentation but probably headed down the right avenue. Thank you..

I'm happy to see someone make simple jigs for their tools. There's not a lot of time wasted in making it. Simplest is oft the best.👍👍 I found a product from Lee Valley Tools that works great for those joints that's been pinned and can't be removed. It's a type of long setting epoxy in a squeeze bottle with a needle applicator. A tiny hole is drilled from underneath into the joint and the needle is inserted and glue squeezed into the joint. The wood in the joint swells with this epoxy and then sets up making the joint tight again. I've used it a couple of times on chairs and a wooden high chair and it makes them rock solid. Not sure if super thinned epoxy in a syringe wouldn't do the same thing.
