I asked a while back whether anyone wanted to see a video restoring this old vice and there was a big response in favour of it. I really enjoyed this one and I also got chance to try out my new milling machine.

I Would Love it so much!!! If he does a Scrap metal series challenge. Hes a Great maker! No matter if he uses Wood, metal, plastics lol heck any material!!! And he can make something Awesome! Not just 100% Functional but Very nice as welll and Cool. I Love his Channel so much! Lol. hes an incredible Craftsman.

Ah! I figured out why I like that your videos don’t have music (besides the fact that people often use lousy music). For me, it makes it much more like hanging out with a friend in their shop.

Absolutely. It also helps that his tone and demeanor are friendly over all. (Not sure if that's how he sounds when he's not on camera, but...{shrugs} that uncertainty only enhances the effect LOL

@@roterex9115 in the States we tend to use lower case "c" clamps. It seems the Australian crowd prefers capital "C" clamps. Do you have any other all caps tools? As I write this through snickering, I feel compelled to admit how I envy these tools. Also, Ive heard "you can never have enough clamps". Will some number of these actually prove that phrase wrong?

For the evaporust bath you can also just stick the vise in a bag, place that in a bucket of water, keeping it out of the bag, and then add the evaporust into the bag with the vise, the water will help hold the evaporust right against the vise and it’ll prevent too much excess space around it so you’ll get full coverage😊

As a machinist, I agree: 1st Blondihacks is a great channel 2nd having the faces of the vise jaws square isn't terribly important. Having the opposite faces parallel is more important but even then these are jaws for a bench vise, so as long as the jaw will close nicely with no gap you're golden. Great video!

Blondihacks is a great channel! The vise looks great. With some clever fixturing, a d-bit, and time you could make another set of jaws that are “knurled”.

I really enjoyed this one and I also got chance to try out my new milling machine. I was going to add checkering to the jaws but decided to see how they go without and I can always add that later on. I should also mention for anyone that doesn't know, a vice (like this one I've restored) is spelled 'vice' here in Australia and not spelled wrongly. Neil is the man. His work is quality, he is honest about the effort he puts into work tools for what the tool will truly be needed for and yes he makes mistakes. He's a man of craft and his talent comes from time, trial and error in new adventures and learning from it. The gift from this man and channel is letting us explore with him and see his craft. And the most important.. we get to see how he ventures into unknowns with excitement, lessons and honesty into projects like this that isn't his rhelm. I feel like I'm sitting across the bench from him trying to figure things out and feeling good about it when I watch his content. All the respect in the world for this man.

I fully agree with you review! I like his perfectionism. The first set of jaws he made, a couple mm short on one side, would work just fine, but they would bother Neil every time he used the vise, hence he had to make a second set, even though if it wastes material (spent on the first set). As a perfectionist myself, I fully understand the feelings that must have been going through his head.

Can I swear? I'll blank it out tho!!.... That was f*****g superb. It wasn't one of those ''perfect-no-problems-encountered'' videos. You showed the minor screw ups when making the jaws too short. You showed the part where you re-filled the metal and had to re-paint. You told us that bolts were too short and will be replaced. You mentioned you are still learning with the milling machine, but having fun along the way. This was a real video. And one I appreciate for the bloody good work at the end of the job, the honesty, and for showing the ''mistakes'' you made along the way. All the best. Dogue.

For a freebie thrown in with the workbench it is still a plenty serviceable vise after the work you put into it. The blue paint makes it look even better.

I higly recommend you to get an edge finder and a milling stop. In my opinion these are two of the most important tools to mill symmetrical or identical parts. You could also make the stop yourself, I reckon this would be a nice scrap steel challenge.

'It's not perfect, but it will stop it from rusting.' That handle has been restored to better condition that 95% of new vices. Nothing better than old steel bought back to life.

Yeah, I was waiting for that part. I wonder how you can knurl them with layman workshop tools (No milling machine!!)? A triangular file and guide jig I suppose?

Really beautiful work, man! It looks fantastic! 😃 You know, I saw the other day a guy making a box for sandblasting! He used a big plastic box, put a metal sheet in it, put a glass in the lid and 2 thick gloves for the hands... Then he just bought a sandblasting pistol to use with the air compressor! I'm thinking about doing the same! 😃 Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

Used mineral oil, heat the part and dip, you will be amazed at the finish. love your work.

Having watched a number of your videos by this point, I have to say that I'm impressed that you show your mistakes. Many KZfaqs "makers" would rather pet a turd than show something they did wrong. Much like yourself, I tend to learn from things that went wrong, and to date, I've yet to repeat the same mistake. In any event, your videos have been and continue to be an inspiration. Thank you.

Once again a great video. Thank You for showing all the steps in your restoration. I find lots of videos that miss steps or lose footage. It also is of great help when using cleaners or chemicals / products that you explain their purpose since terminology and products vary from country to country. Also very nice that you showed how to touch after painting when you were not satisfied with the result. As always I’ve learned a lot that is applicable to other projects.

When I mounted my vise, I decided to add a wood base made from a scrap piece of oak stair tread. It seems to absorb some shock that might other wise crack the vise. Anyways, that's what I tell myself.

A few years ago I made a set of copper jaws for my vice, and I had a hell of a time getting the screw holes in the right place. I envy you your milling machine.

You should consider putting some cross-hatching on the jaw clamp faces - it will grip a little bit better than smooth faces. But other than that, the vice looks fantastic!

I just got my old neighbours vice and it was thick with dirt and rust so I gleefully said "Oh, I'll restore it!" like it was a simple task.....after watching your video I can clearly see I've bitten off waaay more than I can chew and I am going to need some serious help and I'll have to buy a lot of things!

Neil, when I restored a similar sized dawn vice last year I took the opportunity to put a thrust bearing on the front face under the screw. Since you now have a milling machine you could make a recess for the thrust bearing and make it seat perpendicular to the handle. Welcome to the multi medium world; now get ready to start shelling out on tooling for the mill !
