Mike Parry or that you can technically call the car a write off when it needs a wash. My dad used to have an old ford Orion which was worth £50 scrap so when it ran out of fuel, filling the tank was technically a write off. Lol.

All that's really fascinating. Now I have some assurance that if any model Astra is looked after mechanically, they should get up to 400,000 kilometre territory. I had a mini meeting with a service department at a local Holden dealership (bearing in mind the company has rebadged Astras for sale) and they said any of the models could get up to half a million kilometres. Mine's a 2006 1.8 litre model hatchback.
@Ivzu
@Ivzu 6 жыл бұрын
There is no reason why they shouldn't be able to do 500k km+. My father had a Vectra with 800k km, he scrapped it only because high pressure pump failed and repair would cost more than the car, engine was still running fine and didn't consume much oil.

No worries. I'm actually probably going to upload another video restoring the headlights in more depth. The Autoglym Paint Renovator looks a little bit expensive (it was something I had from years ago), so you could substitute it with a finer grit (5000) sandpaper or a magic eraser. I've also found that T-Cut seems to work okay too.

Ive been doing mini valets on cars for around 20 years and never seen the heat gun trick. What a great idea mate. A trick i used before on the faded mk3 black plastic bumpers was WD40 spray and wipe over the bumper with a soft dry sponge to even the spray out. Works great and helps restore the faded trim. Ive had a few astras myself too, mk2, mk3 and mk4. Great old cars that go on forever if looked after.

Wow, quite a rare Astra that one. I had one too when they were new. The 1.7 DTi ECO4. It held the Guinness book of records MPG record for a short while. There was a test with one where they did John oGroats to Lands End and averaged 91mpg or something like that. It had a full under car body tray for aerodynamics. A special gearbox with specific ratios to stretch more MPG.

Ouch, those scratches on the plastic wheel covers, no id what you call these tings in English. Over the years I fixed my wifes Renault ones now with some cheap 2 euro spray cans from a shop, the colour is gunmetal metallic. Clean the plastic really well and just overspray. If the plastic is damaged use some filler. All in all very rewarding and from 1 meter away they look brandnew every time. You can clean the car while the paint is drying. Like clean tyres and nice new looking trim it makes a big difference in the cars overall appearance.

What filler would you use on the trims? Thanks
@Luke-san
@Luke-san 6 жыл бұрын
I just use some filer I bought at a shop here called Action, mostly Chinese cheap stuff. As a matter of fact I had to redo all trims again 3 weeks ago. Some of the sidewalks here have some really nasty curbs. 1 was very badly damaged with a piece missing. I actually had to sculpt like an inch by an inch that was just thorn off. The way I did this was to firstly clean the trim really good, also on the inside around where the part was missing. (isopropanol to take the grease and dirt off). I then used plaster joined tape (fiber mesh) on top of duct tape that I stuck on the back. The fiber mesh will strengthen the plaster and using the duct tape you can sculpture without the stuff falling through. Then I let it settle for an hour and start using sandpaper and a file for the recreated part. For the paint to grip I used a 800 sandpaper and then primer and 3 coats of that gunmetal spray. It's not 100% but 95%. This time it took me a couple of hours in total but it is satisfying to see the result and it is not hard work at all.

Great solution temporarily, but dries out the plastics so will end up worse in the long run once faded again
@James-ns6jm
@James-ns6jm 6 жыл бұрын
it's a 1 time use really. It brings up oils in the plastic which replaces the ones lost over time because of weathering. Once the trim becomes dull again the heat gun will struggle to bring any more oils up as it was done before. Only solution after this is some trim restorer like autoglym which does a great job but probably doesn't last as long as the heat gun. TBH id do the heat gun then use the trim restorer to just make it last longer.

Juts add some LED's to lights for the ultimate transformation, the owner will be amazed that they can actually SEE at night lol. One gets's used to gradually dimming lights and adjusts so of course seeing before and after is a good show of just how much improvement can be made for seemingly obvious and simple things.

Nice trick with the heat gun, wouldn’t have though about that. Also, you can use a magic eraser soaked in warm/hot water with APC/degreaser and that also works very well.

you can do the same with a Dasch spray cleaner... more cheap, durable and without risking the paint with the 500 *C pistol.

I hate people who do that, I mean, I know it's religion and all, I'm religious too, but if someone says something like that you don't block them and harass them (as SOME people might've done), you tell them to kindly not do that again. I mean its not like "OH NO IM GOING TO DIE BECAUSE OF THOSE WORDS AHHH."

at the stage at 11:30 I personally use forever black to blacken the trim on mine, lasts a good 2 months and only have to touch up or give another basic coating to get it back to absolute black again. Ive used a heat gun before but in the summer months then the plastic trims get get hot even then further drying out the oils and things inside of the trim and you are left with these white swirl marks all over them. So even with the heat gun you have to reapply after a while. Forever black definitely recommended by me for plastic trim!

Found a great method for head light restoration , don't buy any of the rip off kits. Use Arm and Hammer toothpaste , mask off bodywork around headlight , put toothpaste on buffing pad on electric drill and polish until clear. Works great , did it on my sons Lexus.

I also have a mk4 astra, in black. But I have enjoyed watching this first video. I totally agree with you about the potent smell of wonder wheels, also with how magma is a great smelling product compared to most other fallout removers. Also your method of heating up the plastic trim fascinates me. I would never have thought of this. Does anyone know if the results are lasting? I look forward to watching part 2 which I will do right now.
