Sharpening regular hand saws can be fun but how do you sharpen a large Crosscut Saw. today we are sharpening and using a large two-man crosscut saw and a one-man crosscut saw. these are not detailed videos on sharpening crosscut saws, but a fun overview. if enough people like this and want to see more I may do a video later showing more detail on sharpening one man and two-man crosscut saws.

My grandfather really had a skill for sharpening the two man and one man handsaws. He always said he preferred using a brass hammer to adjust the set and raker teeth as it caused a lot less damage to work you had already done when you had an errant hammer strike. He also made it clear that it wasn't if you missed but when you did. He also had an old oil can with about 1/3 kerosene and 2/3 old motor oil to keep the resins from sticking to the saw plate when we were cutting wet timber. Most of the woods we used were resinous softwoods like fir and pine. It was great to see someone sharpen and use the saw without having to build a half dozen jigs and use calipers to check every last detail. Most of the time on a rough cutting tool you have managed to mess up all that fastidious work in just a few minutes anyway. Also just for your information his saw vice was a couple of straight boards shaped to roughly match the saw plate curve, a few C clamps to keep everything tight to the saw plate and he just moved it along in his blacksmiths leg vise attached to the workbench. Thanks for the video and bringing back a few good memories.

Tnaks man! I think I would like your Grandfather. whe I have to do a bunch of cutting I have a little bucket with kerosene and old to wipe down the blade between logs. it is amazing the difference!

I volunteer at a museum occasionally when I can. I pulled out an old crosscut saw for me and another fella to use on a chunk but boy was that a chore. After that, I've been interested in cleaning them up and getting them in functional order again. I like your method, not looking to getting them to showroom shine, but to the point where we can use them properly. Thanks, for this vid, I learned what I needed to.

I use both in my wooded garden in England - good to see that I'm sharpening them correctly ! I have a 5-foot 2-person saw which I manage by myself by differing the angle of the push and pull strokes. To prevent splitting a trunk at the end of the cutting, I turn the trunk over part-way through. Yes mild steel saws are so pleasant and relaxing to use - and to maintain. They are often as quick as chainsaws too. A great subject you have chosen to make the video about - I'm obviously going to give my vote to you making the second video... Thanks !

As always, thanks for the great info James! I just got a two-man saw in hopes of slabbing a large maple trunk I recently got from a neighbor. I’m sure it won’t be too efficient ripping, but I don’t have a chainsaw bar big enough and don’t mind putting in the work. Any tips for ripping with one of these? Would it be worth removing the fleam?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 5 жыл бұрын
Wow. That will be tough. They will want to wander and may bind up. Have you thought of making a frame saw? That is the traditional western saw for the job.
@jeffguerrero6745
@jeffguerrero6745 5 жыл бұрын
Wood By Wright I have looked at the frame saw plans but this particular trunk is so large that I won’t be able to move it until I’ve cut a good amount off. I’m thinking I’ll wedge it as I go to help with the binding. I knew I bit off more than I can chew but I couldn’t pass up this huge maple my neighbor had cut down...😬

@shermanhofacker4428
@shermanhofacker4428 3 жыл бұрын
Amount of set is determined by the wood; softer, wet, or green needs more. If saw gets harder to pull when the blade is buried that's your sign.
