It should be noted that this WAS indeed a National Park and STILL it got a big push back so you can imagine how hard it is to de-commission dams that arent on protected land. All the development that accompanies dams have powerful vested interests. Not all the time but often. But nice to see man conceding a few points after running up the score for so long.

Those last few seconds of the first nation's Creation Story brought a tear. We talk about the Fist Nations lands being physically destroyed but the spiritual aspects of their culture being destroyed is more heart breaking. Losing your ability to worship at places your ancestors deemed holy is soul destroying.

All that time, effort and money to remove the dam, just to add 3,000,000 more predatory fish all within 24 hours? Good luck with the restoration.

Estuarine conditions may have had both beavers ad common muskrats that are riparian experts in controlling water flows by actively managing associated habitat variables which offer backwaters, pools, riparian plant species diversity, interactions between the two species which co-exist in creating highly effective fish and insect diversities by having floating vegetation mats, increased insect and nutrient uptakes, nutrient cycling, and an actual relationship that offers a communal ecosystem that integrates nicely with the stewardship of many aquatic species, These are significant as they actively integrate on creating the effective constituents of a more natural riverine ecosystem of a lotic, dynamic water table which is receiving attention due to the connectivity and active integration of their activities near the mouth and estuary. Muskrats do inhabit salt water estuaries and can be commensal in effect and the two species do get along quite uniquely in diversifying the river channel and function as well as near the estuary especially.

Awesome job dude....NOW THE BIOLOGISTS will artificially introduce the damned things, probably a species native to eurasia and next time you comment it will have to be on the invasive and harmful species let run amok in and around the ilwah river basin. Got to remember, the only good biologist is the one at the aquarium....the rest are political hacks looking to get face time and publishing creds for some retardation they thought up at 0230 in the morning during a dream about gaia

I can see both sides to the story. Man's quest for wealth and comforts vs. nature. Though I suppose humans and indeed other animals have been damming rivers for a long long time and while its effects arent benign, it does create very clean energy compared to fossil fuel. I am from Quebec where we have The James Bay which, is also controversial. In the end I suppose its a dated power supply and needs to probably be used sparingly if at all.

Most of us agree in the importance of protecting our environment. But we also appreciate progress, and electricity is vital to our everyday life. If we do not choose to make trade-offs, then maybe we should stop using electricity and go back to whale oil lamps and heating with wood. Oh, but that isn't environmentally friendly either. But we have renewable electricity sources you may say. Ya, but unless the area has ample wind and/or sunshine, those technologies typically cannot meet base load needs - meaning alternatives like fossil fuels, or nuclear power, are required somewhere else. So you don't want a dam, are you willing to allow a nuclear plant to be built in your state to achieve that goal? Or perhaps allow that old dirt burner in the next town to run another decade? I am not saying projects like this aren't important; but we all need to consider all life-cycle factors, not just one or two we champion. Otherwise, we are destined to repeat the same mistakes made in the past.

70% of the power made by dam was used to run the paper mill owned by mainly foreign investors. Did the local framers, tribe and businesses get compensated for their losses?

the dam would fail or the lake would slit up at some point . where there is no long term use of this river . i see this post as a pointless statement , the river best serves mankind as a fish farm
@anvilhead59
@anvilhead59 4 жыл бұрын
A pointless statement due to your ignorance of ecology. Dam removal will allow fish species to re-establish and bring back the tribe's livelihood. A fish farm that will become healthier with the dam's removal.

Didn’t you hear the biologist point that the salmon brings up nutrients from the sea. The odd thing about the Pacific Northwest is due to its high rain. It washes most nutrients back to sea 🌊. The salmon is one of few fish that evolved or you may want to say, god provided to reverse that ecological imbalance.
