This beautiful little painting escaped Nazi Germany during the Second World War and is now ready for some TLC. Henriette is having a dent repaired and then cleaned and a very discoloured varnish removed.

Henriette is indeed a very beautiful woman. She has been painted very demurely, and yet those earrings… My mind wandered off making up possible stories - was the artist in love with his sister-in-law? Why did he never paint his wife? We’re the earrings a gift from the artist, and that is why they have been included, despite them appearing somewhat incongruous with her clothing? Questions we can never know the answer to, but one thing is certain, Henriette has finally come to rest in a safe pair of hands. I so look forward to seeing her once more looking as the artist intended. Those eyes…❤️🎨🖌❤️

Thank you , what I find interesting is that the family members who have the painting knew this fact so it must have been passed down through the generations and this story always told …love how legends are born !!

@@Bloomfield_Art_RestorationJewelry in rural or working families was typically inherited, passed on for generations. I could see this having been her best dress and her grandmother's earrings, and probably selected with care before sitting for the portrait.

This is a beautifully painted portrait. He felt a lot of love (or dare I say it "was in love") with Henrietta. To produce such depth, care, observation and detail, is just so breathtaking. 💙

I tend to agree , nothing rushed or forced with this painting , it really does capture time stilled.

I’m thinking those earrings might have been her Sweet 16th Birthday Present. A portrait also helps her debut into the marriage market.

I was thinking the same about how the earrings seem out of place with the outfit. He painted a beautiful painting. How old was she, she seems young ? It amazes me how artists can make jewelry pop like you could just pull them from the painting. How they make them look so delicate and realistic . Reminds me of the jewelry from the last painting.

I know what you mean , I think jewellery was much more important in the past , I feel like it’s lost it’s significance in the modern world , artists knew this and were able to use subtle trompe oil tricks to make them look real ..

Beautiful painting! I was surprised to see newspaper as a tacking edge though. The other conservation of the painting must have been a long time ago to use oil paints for retouching. I do hope that comes off, so you can restore her properly. I look forward to more. Thanks for sharing.

I think the newspaper may have been used as part of the lining process sometimes paintings are stretched in a wooden frame with paper edges …I think the oil will come off …hopefully anyway …

I very much appreciate you taking the time to soften the varnish first, then gently going over and over it so as not to damage anything by being too aggressive.

You may have touched on this in videos, but I'm new here, so I have a question. I notice that for this painting there's a varnish, and some retouching, but those things have degraded over time while the original painting seems fine under all the other layers. Is there a common reason paintings like this might be varnished or retouched in the past? And are these things being done by amateurs or did the people who did it think that it would last, and it's just degraded anyway?
@Bloomfield_Art_Restoration
@Bloomfield_Art_Restoration Жыл бұрын
Most natural varnished will degrade and yellow over time. Past restorations wil remove once they are cleaned again. The original paint has hardened over time and solidified and as king as your really careful with your cleaning solution should stay strong
