Crystal Palace, London.
C/U shot of a crocodile, or a similar monster made of stone and coloured green. C/U shot of another monster's face - this one look more like a dinosaur and less like a crocodile. Voiceover says these are the monsters of prehistoric time - dinosaurs in Crystal Palace Park who are about to have a makeover. L/S of a man restoring one of the monsters. M/S of a man working. Voiceover says those sculptures were over 100 years old and have to be handled with great care. Man in charge of the restoration is Polish born sculptor Mr Adam Bienkowski.
C/U shot of another monster's face. This one resembles a boa constructor from Disney's Jungle Book. M/S of an artist working on the teeth of yet another monster. C/U shot of the teeth being restored. L/S of a monster with step ladder leaning to it. Man is climbing up the ladder. Painter and decorator Gordon Free is about to put few coats of paint on dinosaur's back. M/S of Mr Free painting the monster. Several shots of Mr Free painting.
All repairs are done under the supervision of Dr Swinton of the British Museum Natural History section. L/S of the trees and bushes with the heads of various monsters seen among them. M/S of Mr Free painting the head of a dinosaurs. C/U shot of the dinosaur's paw (hand?) being painted. M/S of Mr Bienkowski holding a head of one of the dinosaurs in his arms. Panning shot reveals the headless dinosaur in the pond. Voiceover says it lost his head in bombing during the World War Two and it is time to get it back on. Several shots of the sculptures in the park - park looks great, very green.

In this 1959 film, Crystal Palace's famous dinosaur sculptures are restored. They remain a wonderful record of how dinosaurs were believed to have looked and lived at the time these models were built in the 1850s.

Fantastic to see the conservation work done in the 1950s. We need the same scale of work done again now. About every 20 years this scale of work is needed, atop annual routine maintenance.

I helped to repaint some of these in the 1980s as part of my YTS. We didn't put cement on them or carry out any repairs whatsoever (some were quite badly damaged). We were just told to paint them with big brushes and buckets of green, brown and red gloss paint.
