I know this is an old video and you'll never see this... But thank you for this video. My dad passed in may of 2022 and I inherited a painting that his dad bought when my dad was little. It is covered in probably 60 years of nicotine not to mention the coal and wood fires. And that my grandfather was a coal miner. I'm going to try this method if you're interested and see this I'll come back and let you know how it works out. I've never done a video before but I may do one for this.

My gratitude is yours, and condolences for your dad. The paintings I have are still in very good shape. The paintings were from my adopted grandpa he was a beautiful painter and smoked all his teenage- adult life. I think they came out awesomely.

Thank you for sharing this information. Mom painted as well. I remember her painting with a cigarette hanging out of her mouth! It's time to clean them. Your uncle was a fantastic artist❤

You shouldn’t clean a painting while in the frame, water and cleaning solution can get under and between painting and frame causing irreparable damage if not removed properly. Always remove from frame and clean paining AND frame 👍

Perhaps a gentle dabbing rinse off with distilled water to finish. Dabbing, not wiping. So that cloth doesn’t catch on paint texture. Well done however.

Excellent paintings. Please see Baumgartner Restoration, (spelling?), to get a better idea of how to go about it. Can’t do it to his level but should prevent inadvertently ruining them beyond repair. Take it out of the frame to start with. Worth the effort for such skilful work. Think of the time and effort he put into them. Good wishes.

Soap name is pronounced Fells Naptha not Feels Naptha. Been around for years but something in it has changed. Color is bright and odor has changed. It doesn't seem to have the same properties it did 20 plus years ago. My Mother used in the 50's and I'm still using it.

I would be nervous to use the cleaning cloth because you hear it. I'd use cotton balls that you can throw away when dirty.

So curious how the painting held up to the cleaning (in the year since you did that work). Did the cleaning process do anything bad at all?
@HabitatWoman2 жыл бұрын
That is a very good question let me go around to all the paintings now and see if I can see anything improper with them. No smudging or peeling of paint, no paint chips missing, They still look nice and vibrant. Let me check the duck painting because that one was the worst one. Dry to the touch nothing is smudging or pealing they look beautiful. With that being said the process held up nicely.

@@HabitatWoman Thanks for checking! One of my Mom's paintings was in a smoker's house. Now I know how to clean it!

If I remember correctly, it took me about three hours, so yes, very time consuming.

I honestly don't know. I have not tried that method, and do not know if it is safe.
