My parents were married there and my brother and I attended the school in the 50's and 60's. Such a beautiful church. I remember our class visiting the catacombs for a tour. May God continue to bless St. Patrick's Old Cathedral, such an historical treasure.

My grandparents were married here in 1978. My grandfather passed March 30th and seeing my grandmother torn apart tears me apart.

I am glad that they restored Saint Patrick's Cathedral, sure it must have costed a load of money, but it is well worth it, to remember the history of the Irish immigrants to New York.

Nice but the original St. Patricks Cathedral deserves at least a mention. Consecrated in 1815, it became a minor basilica in 2010. St. Pat's Old Cathedral on Mulberry was the end point of the St. Paddy's Day parade from 1815 to 1830 and was the seat of the archdiocese until 1879.

In 1981, I was in a professional men & boys choir and we performed at St. Patricks Cathedral on Christmas Eve. In fact, during that Christmas Eve performance: at the front left of the large gold architectural piece above the alter [I can't recall the name for it], my brother and I sang a duet of "Silent Night" -in German. Why is there no story for the Episcopal rival Cathedral Saint John the Divine?

I wish they hadn't told me it's mostly just wood painted to look like marble. They had me fooled. Sounds like they had the cathedral restoration committee fooled at first too. Nobody knew until they got up on the scaffolding and took a close look.

The original Saint Patricks cathedral is in Ireland and has 800 years. It is not even catholic. It is an Anglican Church. If you study a bit of church architecture, you would know that this church with gothic style has strong bottom and very light ceilings to avoid disasters. I am surprised that people doing the restauration did not know that the ceiling was made of plaster and wood. Any quick research in google or you tube in how gothic church/cathedrals are build you will know that. I work in a cathedral in Ireland and its weird to know that they did not know that.

With the new Mass, the visual focus has shifted, and everything that is behind the altar is now not serving its original purpose. Imagine that you have a photo of a loved one in a beautiful frame. The frame augments the photo and enhances it, makes it important. Now take the frame out of the photo and display it with the frame in the background somewhere. Not the same.
